There are plenty of free alternatives that look, and function fine. That's not the point. Even UBB, which costs MORE then fuseTalk, crumbles under the bandwidth pressure at a forum this heavily trafficked.

I think that was the one I as refering to.
It looks and sounds good, and the company claims it scales very well (supports load balancing and clustering). Even if its not as good as FuseTalk, I doubt you can beat its price/performance

Umm.. I don't know if you're talking strictly &quot;web bulletin board&quot; software or not, but that's probably the furthest thing from the truth if not.

Slashdot.org gets much more traffic than these forums, and is mod_perl/apache/linux/freebsd/mysql based.

nd, I find it amazing that you can see our traffic even though you don't work here ? . These forums are one of the most powerful forum applications built. Period. There are others that are powerful, but most of them cost 4-6 times more. We aren't alone but we are certainly in the top few.

i make that 6.7 messages a minute.

then there is the thread page, the message page, and the reply page, and the updated message page.

so each post probably requires somewhere around 4 pageviews per posted message.

so thats about 27 pageviews a minute.

judging by my own usage, i read probably 10 more topics than i post in, but that is only two pageviews.

thats say 50 pageviews a minute from active members. then there are lurkers and refreshes, plus the fact that server load changes at different times of day.

yeah, the servers take a bit of a battering don't they, even if i am completely out.
