The Zen Sleek?

And can I get a concise list of reasons why the iPod sucks harder than a Dyson, as I really can't see it for all the fanboy ranting on here everytime they are mentioned.

Go!

Crikey. It's normally a flaming sh1t-fight within three minutes if you mention iPods. Where are the mp3 guru's?

I've got an iPod mini. Reasons I got an iPod over everything else:

1) Design: I don't think anything comes close to the iPod design-wise
2) Mac Compatibility: Since I use Macs most of the time, it makes more sense for me to have an Apple MP3 player
3) Ease of Use: I like being able to just use my current "jukebox" (iTunes) to dump my music onto my iPod. It's really easy.
4) UI: The Apple UI is much better then Creatives, iRivers, and Rio's, from my personal experience, IMO.

Sure, theres no FM Radio, OGG/FLAG support, gapless playback, and a few other things, but to tell you the truth, I don't need it. Costs a bit more, but the above 4 reasons justify it for me.

1. I'd rather pay 100 dollars less for something that does that exact same thing.
2. I don't care how my player looks, as far as I'm concerned they all look pretty good.
3. I'm just evening out the obvious complete biased opinions on cnet and other sites that do reviews (yes, check into it, go there and under negatives for any other player you will find things like non-removable battery, but venture into the ipod pages and it's not even a negative for them, even though the batteries aren't removable. how much sense does that make? seems like a bias to me!)
4. I'm willing to pay 100 dollars less for something that doesn't have a clicky wheel navigation
5. My player, Lyra jukebox 20gb, doesn't need any third party software, I just plug it in and windows auto-detects it and it acts like a hot swappable hard drive.
6. I never really cared for anything Mac, I find that most of their sales are from trend-whoriness designs, and that's their strongpoint.

Why not to have an iPod: Cost vs. Function. They're fashion accessories first, "Apples" second, and hardware third.

Oh, and people blast BMW for the "iDrive" - which is essentially an iPod user interface ported to a car's dash computer (where do you think they got the name?). And then they turn around and acclaim the iPod's interface as "perfect" - heh.

I think iPod offers the best Cost vs. Everything. They have the best balance of function/form factor/navigation/assessories/style. You can find players for cheaper, but they're either bulit like bricks or lack some kind of functionality. You can find players that look slightly better, but it will be more expensive. Overall, it depends on what things matter to you.

The sleek is pretty ugly, but impressive tech-wise. Now the upcoming Zen Vision, at a reported $400 looks to be FVCKING AWESOME. Wish I hadn't just gotten a Gigabeat.

See Microsoft

That is *not* the reason I hate the iPod. And I don't even hate it, just think for the price there are considerablly better alternatives. That is all, plain and simple.

Can't comment on the sleek, don't know much about it, but I can tell you I got my Zen Touch over the ipod because of a few reasons..

Better sound quality
24 hour batterly life
Cheaper
It navigates just fine to me, I don't know what Ipod people are always talking about (and yes, I've used an ipod several times)
It's just slightly bigger than an ipod, not enough to notice
The buttons are made so I can press them through my pants and know what I'm pressing, perfect for mowing.

I'm not a guy that cares for looks in my electronics that much (and of all things, why and mp3 player..most of the time they should be in your pocket!) but I think my touch looks just fine.

I also have two friends with Zen Micros, and they seem to love them.

reasons why I bought my ipod:

1.) 30% off at student store [made it cheaper than what I can get for others]
2.) User Interface.

reasons that made me not want an ipod:
1.) lack of functionality (voice recorder/fm radio)
[figured I don't need fm radio, and my cell phone has a voice recorder]
2.) it comes in white, and other colors that doesn't appeal to me
[I keep it in a black leather case, so no one ever sees my ipod, on top of that, I use black ear buds, not to hide the fact that I have an ipod, but because I like these ear buds of mine, and I had them before I got my ipod]

I've got an iPod Photo, and I think it's pretty decent. I got it because I spend about equal time on Mac and PC, and wanted something that would move between the two w/o hassles. I also think the touch wheel is a great interface. I can easily operate the iPod through the fabric of my jacket pocket, and i think that's pretty neat. One thing I truly hate about it is that if you look at it sideways, it scratches. The feature set is sort of a joke, it would be nice if you could easily pull your music off of it.

i have an 4th g iPod because it was free...i didn't have an mp3 player before...i've gotta say though...itunes is a big negative for me...unless you use a third party program to load your music on...the interface is just fine, i haven't really messed with others so i can't say that it's superior, but it certainly works fine for me, it tends to not have the best battery life, but again not horrible, but it just barely lasts a whole day of work, where i've heard others last like 12+ hours (might be untrue)...and then it'd be nice to have a fm tuner or something, i got a voice recorder for free too, so that's a moot point, though keeping track of it is kinda a pain...and the earbuds aren't that great...but i got plenty nice headphones if i really need them

reason why not to buy an ipod mini:
200 dollars is a complete rip for 6gb and 1500 songs.
connecting it to a windows pc is a pain in the ass
ipods have nothing better than any other cheaper mp3 player

I'm one button push away from purchasing a MobiBlue, just to see how small that fvker really is. 1GB storage for the 2nd smallest MP3 player made (the smallest is the BenQ Joybee, but that thing has annoyingly small capacity), with USB 2.0, FM Radio (with record function), voice memo, OLED display, upgradeable firmware, etc., is definitely worth giving a shot.

Not really into super capacity players. People have different needs, and mine don't require instant access to 20,000 songs.

Reasons why an iPod sucks?

1) No WMA support (I don't care)
2) No Ogg support (I don't care)
3) No FLAC/Monkey support (I don't care)
4) Apple DRM (cannot copy songs off iPod onto harddrive...but this is by design)
5) Limited to iTunes Store, no other music store compatibility.

Then again, I bought an iPod for one simple reason: it works, and it works well! I love the accessories I've got (Altec speakers, Monster tuner.) iTunes is my favorite music management program, integrated podcasts are great, and I love the iTunes music store. The user interface is hands down the best one for a jukebox player.

As far as flash-based players go, Samsung and Rio OWN--especially with Napster-to-Go support.

Yeap. Of course Creative Labs has the best sound...Battery life is in a close second to Dells DJ, and the cheapest of the bunch, but still maintains high quality.
