Cool. Thanks for breakin it down like that. I agree with most of your posting, but will probably sell and recoup as much cash as I can now. It's certainly has dried up. (With STALKER being pushed into 2006.. and why is it evertime ther release a movie it's at 15f ps (maybe it's the crappy video driver on my work PC). I can't see being completely without a PC anytime soon, but my gaming rig is gonna go. The money I save now, will go to a comeback (if it ever does..)

Many people have made some crazy assumptions in this thread, but I turn hardware over at a rapid pace, I've gone from 533 Mhz 2.4 (9800) to 800Mhz 3.0 to Bfg6800GT to AGP 3.4 EE to FX 55 BFG6800GTSLI in about 9 months. It's not like I sit on hardware long. This time, instead of the sale going to upgrade, it goes to the bank.

I agree. Games have gotten so bad lately, it's a joke. Back in the early days, you had to get it right the first time because you couldn't send out patches to everyone who bought your game. Now developers release half-finished games to meet deadlines and then patch them to near completion later.

The quality seems to be there for Consoles

I haven't met a game yet that my system can't run.

I can't even run that because it crashes with SLI enabled. Then when they fixed it, it complains about requireing OpenGL 1.3 (My cards report 2, and the game engine pukes when it see it)

Then again, I don't think there's a system out there that could run some of the games I play at my Windows resolution. HL2 at 1920x1440 and full AA? I'm skeptical that any computer out there could do it.

I can do 16x12 max detail and full (well not 6, but 4x) AA I think it's do 1920x12

There are also some games that I hate playing on consoles. FPS games, for one. Simulation or strategy games? Forget it. Consoles are for racing games and third-person jumping around games.

Dont' forget sport games!

One note that I wanted to say was that the Consoles continue to churn out unrushed high quality games. They put the time into it there... (Enter teh Matrix aside) I guess because they know they'll get paid for it...

No offense but this was all the same crap we saw five years ago with the Dreamcast/PS2 coming. Even PC editors themselves agreed that PC games would be become "simpler" to the degree that we'd see more console style menus and less keys to use since they would be mainly ports of Console games.

Did that come to happen? NO

So as long as PCs exist, PC gaming will continue to exist.

You got some good points. I believe we've been tapped for about 3 years on what you need from a PC to do 90% of tasks. I mean I browse web on a old tbird, run excel..do all sorts of PC stuff that feels little different than my power box. In sum I feel a PC has become an applaince, not needing upgrades unless you 3D game or run heavy work station apps, that's like 10% of market.

If XB360/PS3 adds a Keyboard, Mouse, printer and full USB capability they could destory the PC market. You'd get a great game machine which all sorts of titles are written for, plus a PC "good enough" for 90% of users.

But that's a big if. You'd also need applications written and compatable and legacy support... not hard with basically PC hardware inside with a tweaked MS OS.

Maybe MS is setting themselves up to take over PC market too? Cheap, high power, computing applainces. Apple had this dream a long time ago..unfortunatly electronics moved at an exponetial rate and people had lots more code to write so it failed... we may be at a turning point.

Yep, Consoles are great for what they do well, PC's are great for what they do well. Nothing beats a PC for a good strategy game.

On the other hand. Consoles rock for multiplayer sports/driving/action games etc when you have friends over.

For my PC, I tend to upgrade a lot. While the Videoboard is upgraded, primarily for games and bragging rights, I also keep the CPU up to date frequently as well, but for real work. Especially to convert Recorded TV files now.

Personally, I can't wait for the XBox360. It will compliment my Media Center PC extremely well.

I quoted you, but excuse the editing. I wanted it to be clear that I was responding to you, but didn't want to add unneccessary length to an already long thread.

I have a different view. I'm happy they are finally upgrading these old technology consoles. The new console games, and ports of such, will be catching up to what modern PC's can do.

BTW: Keep your uber rig, FEAR, Stalker, Unreal 3 and others are on the way. Should be some good stuff using the D3 & HL2 engines too. Likely there will be "sleepers" like Far Cry etc coming out this year.

I dont get this "if you have less than an x850 youre a traitor" bit. PC games have scaleable graphics for a reason. We all have DX9 cards, thats what game devs will shoot for from now on, with dx8 support maybe. You x850 and 6600ultra guys may run sweeter resolutions, but the eye candy is the same whether its at 800x600 on an ATI 9600 or an x850 at 1600xwhatever and super duper aa/af setting. The dx9 code is the same. They didnt skimp cuz of us peeps that dont blow $500 on a vid card every 6 months.

Ive seen the steam survey and yes, Im kinda dissapointed by the low end hardware too, but face it a lot of those peeps may of upgraded by now and you cant get less than dx8/9 cards now.

Games take what, a year or longer to code? The super rigs will always have a bit of a wait before they get to shine, as when current games were being developede, that hardware may not of existed.

All I can say is you're an idiot if you think the enjoyment of a game is based on graphics. Starcraft is still my favorite game, it's from 1998(or 1997?) and I couldn't imagine playing a better RTS.

Here's my solution. If you want the gaming industry to advance faster, why don't you buy us all a SLI rig. Until then, I can't afford $600 on a single component of my computer and I'm happy to stick with my Radeon 9700 PRO which has provided me more than adequate service thus far. Oh, and here's the thing: Even though it's the oldest component of my system (see http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.aspx?rigid=30514), I don't really feel that it's holding me back at all.
