you know the clicks of death on hard drives?

on my maxtor quietdrive, i get maybe ONE click every week more or less.

not many clicks, just one click, do you think this is bad? my computer doesnt slow down or anything like that.

i'd backup and swap it out for replacement...try to warranty it.

I wouldn't be so hasty.

It's true that the IBM "Deathstar GXP75" series of HDD's exhibited clicking before and during total data loss, but the click is due to the armature making a sweep across the platter in an attempt to find data that could not be found. This was due to a problem with the GXP75 series of drives caused by uneven heating and expansion of the platter. I don't believe that Maxtor drives experience the same errors. I would still advise a disk scan for damaged sectors.

nope, go my computer-->right click HD-->properties-->tools-->restart

Its normal for drives to click every now and then. This is the drive just doing some recalibration. It takes all of a second for it to complete, most people never hear it. On some drives you can't even hear it happen.

Scandisk is still in 2k/XP, its just named something different, trying runnng "chkdsk" now

My Western Digital 7200 RPM 40 GB clicks every once in awhile. I have no problems with it at all though.

i think scandisk w/a surface scan checks for bad sectors

(doesn't maxtor have a utility that does this?)

just over a year ago i purchased two 20gb maxtor hard drives
one made weird clicking sounds and wobbled a bit the other was silent as a bird
(only wish i woulda got a warranty on the former) but luckily both drives are still up and running perfectly to this point, even with the clicks and bumbs
