But they seemed to do fairly well making a few bucks this quarter.

Ford makes a bundle

While their numbers for the remainder of the year could do who knows what, thats a nice 1st quarter.

The general public is uninformed about Ford's inability to produce quality products

Well, when your interiors are designed and made by Tyco, just the cost cutting alone will make you a profit

lol - seriously, they're losing big time. I can't wait to see what the 2005 Mustang does to their stock and profits...

No, the estimates were a ~400M$ profit, but they doubled it.

I do not understand your post...

But, I hope they start coming out with less expensive sports cars again... like the Mustang/Camaro/Firebird type..

82 thousand on a Mercury tracer station wagon. Absolutly fantastic car. Not a single problem of any kind and runs like a top. Can't say enough good about the car. But the local ford dealership sucked so bad it was closed.

My brother and a '90 Ford Taurus in which the transmission went out. We researched it online and I can't believe Ford didn't do a recall on it. The domestic car manufacturers all seem to be a bit slower and more unlikely to do recalls than import. Pretty disappointing but they are cheaper...

Then he got it rebuilt and it died 20k later. The shop went out of business. It is sitting over at my Aunt's place in a shed. Pretty damn annoying but the mice like their new home.

I have owned a few Ford cars/trucks. Never had a problem with any of them.

But I do not like the Focus. I have heard a few people grumbling about them. Not to mention it seems to get a new recall every month or so.

Uh... how could you not understand? Jesus... Ford is losing money like CRAZY.

Ford made Mustang. It made them money. Chevrolet made Camaro. Pontiac made Firebird.

Ford makes cars as good or as bad as the other 2 but Ford vehicles are uninspiring. Maybe thats why they sell in large numbers. Most people don't really care about their cars as long as it gets them where they want to go most of the time.

All car makers have their up and down periods. Maybe it's their time now but Chrysler seems to be making the most exciting vehicles at this time - & best bang for your buck(I'm only talking of US majors - not imports).

That said, the 2nd most fugly car (after Aztec) has to be the Focus.

Uh... people don't just care about only getting where they want to go. A vehicle is the second largest purchase that you'll ever make, next to a house! People care about their vehicles. They're excited about getting something new. Many take pride in the fact that they own a specific brand or model. For many, vehicles are a way of life. It's not hit or miss in the car industry, it's a struggle for the top.

No, there are worse ones out there that are uglier than the Focus. And not every Focus looks all that bad, its just the no options ones and the wagons ugh.

Holy fscking crap. I understood your entire post. Excuse me while I go crack open a beer in celebration!

Seriously though...what do you expect, Moonbeam, when a car is powered by enlightenment?

Yep. The 2 doors look 10x nicer than the 4 door and wagons - bleh. The SVT version looks awfully nice also, but too bad its all show and little go :|

Bite me. My Focus wagon rocks with tinted windows......
Ford dealer did the ONLY recall I've received in less than a day.
30 + MPG at 75 mph.... stock...
And the cops chase the ricers, not me....

I agree. But there are many who buy a vehicle because of MPG, amount of cupholders and coz 'everyone's buying it - it must ge good'. There's also a large buying segment who buy a car for its percieved reliability. I say perceived because cars are after all mechanical devices and anything mechanical can and will break down. A lot depends upon how it is driven, used and maintained. Everyone gets excited about a new car purchase but the reasons for choosing one car over another differ. There are many uninformed buyers out there - hence the car Co's need for large scale advertising.

You're right about brand/model loyalty. I'm a prime example - own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and love it - my second JGC (old faithful ran reliably for 150K miles before I bought this one). Of course a performance enhanced engine and suspension add to the fun of driving it. Exterior is strictly stock - no ricer type stuff.

BTW here's something I posted in an different thread:

Of all the vehicles owned by my co-workers:
- 2 have files cases under lemon laws - both Fords - one F-150 truck & one taurus
- 2 trucks are unreliabe and giving trouble - both Fords (150 & a 250)
- Of all the SUV's the Explorer died at 70.000 & was replaced by a Durango. All other SUV's running fine, incl Jeeps, Durangos, 4-runner, Blazer, Passport. As much as 150,000 miles so far
- No one has bought a Ford in the last 2 years except 1 (wife of co-worker) who bought an Explorer very recently. The Jury's out on that one. All other ex-Ford owners have sworn never again.

The only Ford still running good is a 250 van.

Doesn't say much for Ford does it? Allow me to point out that this is not representative of the whole country - just within the company I work for.

And you have to admit Chrysler has been coming out with good concepts in recent years - starting with the Minivan & the Intrepid/concorde/vision etc. were years ahead of their time when they first came out. Other Co's are now doing the same which is good for the consumer - more competition.

To each his own. I find the Focus fugly and belongs to the category of "What were they thinking!!"

Ford makes a very good product. I've got two Ford trucks that are about as good as a truck can get and definitely better than some Japanese made POS.

I'm thinking about trading up for a new one.

Actually the imports are harder at complying to recalls than domestics, in fact Ford has the most voluntary Service action than any other auto manufacture.

As for your transmission, there were several different reasons behind the AXOD & AXODE transmission failures, most of then due to lack of maintenance.

For some reason i'm a chrysler fan. (i'm only talking about domestic cars here). Otherwise i like many other imported cars.

Seriously though, like someone mentioned above, it's all about maintenance. If you don't maintain your car regularly and properly, then of course its lifespan will be decreased.

Even though they are showing an increase in profit, this is offset by the 700 million they will lost this quarter due to a down turn in the industry.

I'll join you on this one, my 92 Escort GT has 174K miles and still running strong. Only major repair was a new clutch at 70K, caused by previous owner driving it hard.
