yeah, I think that's how 99% of Europeans react when they taste root beer.
I remember me and 5 other guys watching superbowl one year and trying to make the evening as american as possible... american beer, root beer, pulled pork, nachos and all that. None of us had ever tasted root beer before and all opened our bottle, tasted it simultaneously and in one great synchronized act of disgust made this face:

the next year it was european beer and no root beer!

And then you regenerated?

Obviously you've never tried...

I had that the other day and I swear it's changed. It had nowhere near the strong aftertaste of asphalt as I remembered it to have.

I have family from Worcester, MA - every time they came to visit they would bring several cases of Moxie. So I grew up drinking it: It's changed at least twice that I remember. Each time, sweeter and less potent.

Well you gave it an honest chance at least.

Were you attending university at the time?

Root beer is something you have to try a dozen times before you start liking it.

Quark: I want you to try something for me. Take a sip of this.

Elim Garak: What is it?

Quark: A human drink. It's called root beer.

Elim Garak: [unwilling] Uh, I don't know...

Quark: Come on, aren't you just a little bit curious?

[Garak sighs, takes a sip and gags]

Quark: What do you think?

Elim Garak: It's *vile*!

Quark: I know. It's so bubbly, and cloying, and *happy*.

Elim Garak: Just like the Federation.

Quark: But you know what's really frightening? If you drink enough of it, you begin to *like* it.

Elim Garak: It's insidious!

Quark: *Just* like the Federation.

LOL- Moxie is ancient! My grandparents used to talk about drinking it in the 20's when they were kids. Tastes back then for "treats" were more toward black licorice, anise, and other sweet/bitter ingredients (today's treats are insanely sweet compared to back then). I guess Moxie was used kind of like a poorman's Coca Cola syrup to treat sore throats, but it became a favorite.

It's definitely an acquired taste. It's like a combination of vanilla and horehound candy.

Root beer is something you have to try a dozen times before you start liking it.

I've never understood this. Root beer is basically just a spicy vanilla beverage- there's nothing really shocking about it. Not sure why a lot of people don't like it. It's not too far off from cream soda.

I quite like root beer, don't drink it often though.
Cream soda is vile though.

Find Virgil's Cream Soda, try some, and report back. It tastes like an ice cream float. A&W also makes a decent cream soda that's inexpensive. The key is it has to have real vanilla in it and not "vanilla flavoring".

Cheap cream soda is indeed vile though.

you must be one of those weird 1%'ers

never tried cream soda because I can tell just by the name it will be disgusting.

And then you regenerated?

I washed the bad taste away with water so in a manner of speaking, yes.
Well it was actually budweiser but same difference.

Were you attending university at the time?

no this was back in highschool.

Cream soda is quite delicious actually. It doesn't have any milk products in it if that's what you're afraid of. It's simply vanilla soda. I really encourage you to give it a try. There's not a lot of people that don't like it.

That's good enough. It's not very often that I get to pull out the "Just Like the Federation" exchange and have it be on topic.

What's sad is I totally read that with both Garak's coy accent and Quark's cotton-ball lisp. I don't think I ever saw that episode, but I totally pictured that exchange exactly.

The part about root beer that sucks - you haven't had root beer unless you've had REAL home made sassafras root beer (which is illegal these days).

Boylan Root Beer has a rich and spicy sassafras flavor, thanks to its blend of cinnamon, anise, black pepper, mushroom, sweet birch, extracts of chocolate and coffee, vanilla, and wintergreen oil.

Blech...

I'm still not convinced, I've been burned by strange american beverages before D:

but if I come across some, I will give it a try and then bitch about it on ATOT straight away, deal?

I can understand not liking rootbeer as it has some spices in it, but cream soda is just straight up vanilla, sugar, and carbonated water. Served ice cold it's a really good "Watch a movie with some popcorn" beverage

I like the cream soda.

birch beer is fucking disgusting, though. I hate the taste of birch bark / wintergreen.

edit: fairly certain birch sap doesn't taste like wintergreen.. the bark does?

I find birch sap to be rather mild. When visiting the gf's family in Latvia a few years back, they had jars of the birch sap beverage, whatever it's called, ready to go after the previous harvest. I thought it was awesome. Mild and refreshing. Awesome for summer.

describing from years-old memory, I would say it was a mild, "piney" taste. similar to juniper but not nearly as strong.

oh man that sounds glorious.

where can i find this?

:hmm:

My local Friar Tuck has it among other various bottled sodas. But previously I would just get it mail ordered. It's been many years since I mail ordered it and I picked up a bottle at Friar Tuck and it did not have as strong of an aftertaste as I remember. But it's kind of horrible, and kind of good at the same time.

I have family from Worcester, MA - every time they came to visit they would bring several cases of Moxie. So I grew up drinking it: It's changed at least twice that I remember. Each time, sweeter and less potent.

Damn that sucks. The old strong flavor had a curious charm to it.

I would warn though that I have found cream soda overseas to taste vastly different from American domestic products. Schweppe's had a popular cream soda in Hong Kong that tasted really nothing like cream soda. Still, I think it's an easily accessible taste. It's smooth, vanilla, but may be on the cloying side.
