I believe the International only is possible. They may charge you $5.00 a month if you don't subscribe to any of the "standard" packages though.

is it possible for customers to get ONLY an international package from dish?.. i doubt it but just wonering if anyone does it

Yes.
You'll pay the cost of the international programing + $5/month access fee

It did not work for me. I wanted two old movies channels only, they told me they don't do $5 fee plus your pick anymore. Basic package is required! I called another time for HBO and Showtime only, I was rejected again.

How's Dish on local channels in general? Around here we get absolutely no reception of WB and UPN is laughable. The rest are so-so. At the moment we have DirecTV who are to say the least not very lenient on letting you watch local feeds. (If you can make out vague shadows of shapes and hear something like sound on broadcast then you aren't entitled to get the station via satellite :|) On top of that they don't carry WB or UPN national feeds -- what you get if your reception is off but they don't offer the local feed in your area -- so we're screwed on that too. Cable won't come out anywhere near us since it's about 4 miles from the nearest hookup as the cable lays.

Aside from the broadcast stuff though we haven't had much trouble with DirecTV. The pricing isn't too bad, especially if you have two receivers in the same house. (whatever options you get it's just $1 per option for the second receiver)

Dish currently covers a massive part of the US. call us up and check to see if you qualify for locals. If you don't you can try for distants, and we do offer the national UPN and WB's to everyone if they're not included in your local package.

Thanks VERY much for the heads up. I saw the 510 on my site and the 100 hour record time had me drooling, but your thread brought me back down to earth. One of the big reasons I went with Dish was because I got the PVR for only $50 and didn't have to pay a monthly fee unlike Tivo. It didn't have all the personalization features, but I don't care. The basics (being able to pause/rewind, etc) are what I love.

I'm probably going to go ahead and snatch up another 501/508 now before they're all gone. I've already got one 508 and love it. I want a second for my basement office/living room where I have an old big screen projector.

Have they officially announced the plan to charge for PVR service yet? I noticed most of the 508s on Ebay were going for virtually the same price as buying new and wondered if it's always been that way or if this info has leaked elsewhere raising prices on the older units.

Yes they have officially announced it and the plan is in effect. The recievers that are being sold new now are the 510's and you will pay the monthly fee. Check Ebay or other places to pick up a used 501/508, local retailers may or may not have a few left over in the back rooms
