Well from what I have done in my comparisons the image you get from satellite (be it DirecTV or Dish) has a sharper image and more vibrant colors than what you get from analog TV. It's kindof like switching from using composite level inputs on a DVD player to S-Video inputs if you want another comparison.

Er, well, I'm willing to accept a little less picture quality for the flexibility and lower price of cable.

I think the image comparison is much more stark than composite versus s-video. Through the lazyness of comcrap, they've never disconnected my cable service though I cancelled 2 years ago. (Not that it matters, since I don't watch it) Occasionally I'll be flipping video modes and catch a few seconds of the cable source on my 53" RP... ACK! Does that suck.

Don't know where you're at, however I was paying upwards of $75 for Charter cable for essentially the same programming I'm only paying $49 for from Dish.
And getting crappy signal. Even after REPEATED phone calls. Cable BLOWS. Especially now that Charter insists on charging their stupid $10 a month fee for broadband only customers. $60 a month for cable internet is rediculous. But guess what, it's the only option I currently have for broadband, so I'm stuck

Sounds like a great deal! Orbitsat was great to work with when I bought my system. Fast too. My folks decided to step up to DTiVo a few weeks ago. I helped them order the system on Saturday night, they received the equipment on Wednesday, and it was installed and working Thursday morning. YMMV on how quickly the installer can come out, but if you're available on a Thursday morning at 10am, I'll bet they have an opening.

Don't know how much you've looked but you can find a better deal than cable on one of the dish providers. I was cold called a couple of weeks ago by Dish Network and was offered a 3-room system, 1 of which was a PVR for free including professional installation. Now my landlord has put enough restrictions that I probably will not be able to comply with his requirement and still get a signal but it's one helluva deal. It ends tomorrow and I don't know if this is a repeating deal or not.

Call the cable company and ask about their "lifeline" package. Its basically the 2-13 channels for about $10/month. It gives you a backup of your locals in case the dish goes out and is essentially free in your situation.

Yeah, but did you ask how much the Dish bill would be for the same number of channels as cable, including the extra receivers?

Who is still selling dish net PVR 508's? Rat Shack I assume is 510 since their ad actually admits to the $5 fee per month with the top 100. allsat.com is only 510. Who still has 508's? Am I too late? What is the best deal on a one-room install of a 508 with top 50?

Looper, if you want to get a 508 I would give a call REAL soon. Currently we have both the new Q3 promotions and the old promotions running. If you sign up for the non Q3 DHP promotion and upgrade to a DVR you will get a 501/508. Be sure to SPECIFICALLY ask for the old promotion, in other words the non Quarter 3 promotion. Right now when you call in the representative will likely try and sell you on one of the new promotions. If you want to avoid the DVR fee then you need to get a pre Q3 promotion. You NEED to do this before the end of the month, preferably today if that's possible at all as the old promotions will be ending soon.

Dude, give it up. You are comparing apples and oranges. You are comparing analog basic cable with satellite. Satellite providers compete with digital cable. Although basic cable is still available, you better be content with a minimum of channels. Every digital cable installation that I have seen required an additional set top box per room, at additional cost. I used to think like you, until I became educated.

Thanks to the unstated Family and Friends DirectTV REALLY good coupon code, I got the Tivo 35hour receiver installed and one of my existing receivers moved for $120 shipped! Gotta love it! And with some threats of leaving for Dish, they gave me 6 months of $5 off my monthly bill and 4 months of HBO/Starz/SkinaMax/Showtime upgrade for free! Gotta love it! Thanks guys!

now, just to figure out how to get a 200gb hard drive in that thing.

are there any places that are still giving free 301/301 with the RFORALL2 promotion which give an equipment credit each month? I know the RFORALL2 promotion has been extended until 2004 but I cannot seem to locate any dealers that offer the equipment for free. Looking for 501/508 at a discount.

thanks

Not all cable companies offer this though. My cable company's minimum package costs $22.99 a month, and includes a small smattering of cable channels with it.

On the "Free-for-all" promo, I don't think you'll find free equipment. The deal seems to be pay for your equipment, get $9/$17 a month credit for one/two receivers. So your end cost is basically free (if you go with non-DVR's). The big plus on this plan is no credit check, and no minimum commitment. However, you only get the full credit back if you go the whole year without interruption. I believe you can even go with the AT50 package and still qualify.

One other thing for all to keep in mind is that if you have the money, you can pay your Dish bill annually. The plus side to this is that you only pay for 11 months, but you actually get 12. This savings is not available for your extra receiver fee or your locals though, but it can save you a little money. Plus, it locks in your price.

I was very tempted to go Dish after I saw this deal a few weeks ago. After thinking about it, I instead turned to Directv for a variety of reasons. The Tivo is hands down a lot better than the Dish PVR and that was the main selling point for me.

You're combining 2 different promotions. The Free For All (RFORALL is the promotion code if purchased at a retail outlet instead of calling us up directly at diah network's toll free #; mods, this is a companywide code, it's within the rules as it's simply the equivalent of a SKU# for a piece of merchandise) promotion requires you to purchase all of your equipment up front, paying all applicable fees. You get paid back in credits every month until you've been paid back for everything.
Benefits: no credit check, no contract, credit on bill every month
downsides: must pay $150 or so up front

The other promotion you're thinking of is the free dish promotion. You get a dish, 1-2 recvrs, and installation for no charge whatsoever, and at the end of 12 months you own the equipment. It's not combinable with Free For All.
Benefits: no upfront charge
downsides: credit check, 12 month at least contract

I'm pretty close to ordering Dish Network but I wanted to hear your opinions. I want a PVR system with 3 regular receivers (4 rooms total) and I want the basic channels PLUS local.

If i do Dish Network, it will be $50 upfront for the PVR (leased), and my monthly for 4 rooms would be $50/month. However they have a deal if I get the Top100 w/ HBO&Cinemax + Local it would be $25.99/month for the first 4 months, and then after I can downgrade.

If i do DirecTV, it will be $200 upfront for the TiVo (own) + $15 shipping, and my monthly for 4 rooms would be $60/month. But these channels would be the Choice Plus plan which is similar to the Top100.

Chiznarles (and others), if any of you are interested in signing up for Dish, I would be more than happy to e-mail/mail you a ClubDish card. You get $50 off any DISH deal, and, as APerry described above, I get $5 off my monthly bill.

Well as a Dish Network Rep of course I'm going to be promoting our service . Keep in mind after the free months the service will be $75.98 per month plus tax if left as is. If you go with just the AT100 + locals you'd be looking at $58.98 plus tax per month. So you'd still be paying less than you would be than if you were going with DirecTV. I will admit that the Tivo units do have some features that I would really like to see implemented on our units and they may yet come in the form of software upgrades. I cannot reiterate enough times how big of an advantage it is to lease your equipment rather than own. Basically as long as you are a Digital Home Plan customer (leasing equip) you are always under warranty. If anything is damaged that is covered under the warranty we come out and repair it or ship you a replacement part. Very nice as opposed to seeing your warranty go goodbye after 1 year for equipment and 90 days for labor.

Argh! So confusing!

What's the best upgrade path for a current Dish Network subscriber to go to a PVR system?

I think Dish offers an upgrade to a PVR for around $149 for existing subscribers. Call them and see what they can offer.

dish seems great, but too bad they dont have any sort of decent combo deals with broadband internet providers.... earthlink dsl is too pricey and that would end up being a combined bill of over $100 for me every month

is it possible for customers to get ONLY an international package from dish?.. i doubt it but just wonering if anyone does it
