so i came home last night from school and my parents told me that a package addressed to me was at our front door. okay np, so i check it out and its a huge white box...shipped overnight from apple.

what was inside that box?

my old 2.2ghz mbp.

everything that i shipped out to them (retail box, the machine itself, cables, manuals, cd, etc) came back to me. there was a sticker on the side of the shipping box that said "surprise!" on it, and i called apple to verify that it wasnt a shipping mistake - it wasnt! they really did return it to me!

im like...in total shock. they had told me to send the old mbp back because i got the new/current mbp, but this was totally unexpected. i have no clue why they would do this...

apple has gained another customer for life now.

Lucky bastage!

So, is the SuperDrive still bad? Even if it is, that's mighty nice of them.

Seriously though. WTF? Maybe somebody there was having an usually nice day. Or maybe this is a viral form of getting good PR. If so, it works.

Pix of the sticker please.

So, you have one new MBP and one old one, all for the price of just the new one?

Not even that. His old one was a lemon with regards to the superdrive issue he had talked about before. He sent it in, they gave him a whole new macbook pro (which hopefully will not have the same issue as the superdrive in the new one is significantly different I believe), then as a surprise, sent him back his old one. Honestly, that is just wicked.

It's nice to read stories like this for those of us that have had nothing but frustration with our dealings with Apple Care/Apple Support/etc. -_- Glad your stuff worked out mate.

here are the pics - pic 1 pic 2 pic 3

eug - there are your pics! actually, the superdrive works! apparently my dad says he burned a cd and there was no static towards the final few tracks on his disc!

fr and mchammer187 - yep, they sent me the new/current gen mbp to replace the old mbp (which i sent back to them).

evilyoda and thestu - yep, but not even for the price of the new one. it was totally free.

anthroandstargate - thank you! me too! i honestly wasnt even expecting this at all - i would have imagined that they would save it for another troubled 2.2ghz mbp user, or possibly even sell it at the refurb apple store online.

keypox - lolol nothing! they overnight shipped it to my house! it was like they never even opened the mbp box at all.

i feel super super super lucky....

Why do I always hear such good things about Apple customer service, yet everytime I visit a store or have to have something done, it's always shit?

Congrats though!

I'm currently mac-less actually because of a run around with a repair. They promised me one price at the store but when the repair center got it they requoted it for around 4 times that amount and i got someone to say they would repair it for the original price but i had to have it sent back and do a mail in repair but when i did that they didn't have notes for it so they were quoting around 1300 again. I'm not paying $1300 to fix a msrp $2000 notebook, and one thats only really worth about $1000 right now anyways. This isn't the first time something like this has happened to me. I had a G5 at work where the cooling system leaked and they wanted $2400 to repair it and a new MacPro was only $2500.

Anyways, im not going to get it fixed most likely. The only reason I really had a Mac to begin with was because i got it for like $200.

Yea.. that's the main reason why I grabbed AppleCare.. It was around $200 and it covers everything, minus accidental damage. I do worry about accidental damage, but I don't believe any other manufacturers warranty that.

I am sorry you're having so much trouble with them though.

I've had mixed results. The first issue I had was that the backlighting appeared to be bleeding through more in little areas than others. They fixed that in about 4 days total (incl turnaround), but when my GPU died (the Geforce 8600 deal).. it took them 4 WEEKS! Ridiculous. Luckily I had another computer, but that was simply unacceptable. Then I had my battery die, and they overnighted me one.. and I had it the next day. Now my LED is doing the original issue again, so I'm giving it more time to see how much worse it gets... :|

Actually, a lot of them do. Dell is notable because I think they were one of the first to offer it. I had an old Dell Axim PDA (man I loved that thing!) that I got accidental coverage on. It definitely paid for itself just before the warranty was up

You can get 3rd party coverage for Apple products. I cannot think of the provider off the top of my head, but their prices, for full coverage (including theft, natural disaster, accidental damage, flood, and fire) is something like $1:6 for a 3 year policy. So, something like a $2000 MacBook Pro would be about $330 Which isn't too bad given everything they protect against. It is significantly more expensive than AppleCare, but how much is the accidental damage coverage worth to ya?

It's a long story that i'll get around to telling in a longer post sometime, but yes. I think it was the GF8600 chip. It will boot until it goes to launch the login window service and then kernel panics. Does it on three different hard drives, the apple tech's external drive and 10.4 and 10.5 dvd's.

The problem is, about three days before it was unbootable, i took it in and it passed the graphics test.
