The media misrepresenting things and making them look worse than they really are...or outright lying through their teeth about things? NEVER!

99% of America probably has no clue how distorted the shit they see on TV and in the newspapers really is.

I think a lot of people realize, which is why FOX of all news channels is beating the shit out of CNN in terms of views.

Sometimes I think it might be better if the press wasn't involved with wars at all.

So the fascists win.

Franklin Roosevelt controlled the press in World War 2, his administration prevented the media from printing pictures the media does today. Was his administration the thing they were fighting?

I like you, you're funny, but I hate misinformed opinions, so please, study up on things, and don't just go along with the whimsical and impulsive media.

Amen

I don't want my news to be censored, period. Especially not by someone who stands to benefit from controlling what we see. Do you not see how that would be a bad thing?

I don't think you understand that it's already censored.

Censorship is bad, to whatever degree it exists, does not exist, or could exist, m'kay? Democracy relies upon an informed population. Censorship makes us sheep.

The news here is very much censored. And for when it isn't censored, it's made up shit. I never watch the news because I don't trust a damned thing they say.

This goes to show that The Economist is such a great magazine that even with a reporter like that, the Marine still endorses it.

That's a huge issue. The media has gone from "get the story" to "get a story". CNN buys footage they know nothing about. But it's great footage. So make up a good story to fit the footage and run with it. It fills the time between commercials.

I think you guys need to give journalists a break. Sure there are bad examples such as the guy mentioned in the video (although we're only getting one side of the story, I'd be interested to hear what the writer has to say) but understand that journalists, especially foreign correspondents, have a very tough job. They have to enter a warzone and in a short period of time, analyze and interpret the events happening around them into a presentable piece packaged in the form of an article, a 3-minute report on CNN, or a radio program. The fact is every situation like this has greatly differing points of view. If you have an insurgent who starts working for CNN, his take on the events around him is very different than those of Wolf Blitzer. And although journalists strive for objectivity, a story has to have some sort of angle if its going to fit into its package, whether that be intentional or not. In the case of a reporter negatively covering U.S. troops actions in Iraq, he believes the world needs to hear about an occupier's disrespect for human rights. So he picks and chooses incidents he saw or verified during his time there, because accounting for every minute and every action would not fit into a package.

With that said, media for Americans is terrible and disgusts me (with Greta van Susteren being the prime example of what disgusts me). However the international channels, including CNN international, do a decent job. Though I think they tend to jump on bandwagons for certain events, only to drop them later. I remember being very encouraged that Myanmar was finally getting some coverage, only to see it fade away later. But I also understand that if a civil war is going on for 60 years, you can't exactly give it air time every day.

Exactly why the "power" the media has scares me a bit currently. They are not wielding it with any respect. I'm sure 90% of the "crap" they report is filler. But the other 10% can be quite damaging. Whatever the numbers actually are I think they are higher on the problem side than they should be.

No, we need to get those soldiers the hell home. They have nothing left to do there but get killed for absolutely nothing. Lives wasted because one party of American politicians are scum and another party are craven.

I am glad we can agree on something. They will to come home after all the (enemy) shooters are dead or captured. I can promise that the majority of troops over there will tell you the same. Re-enlistment rates are the highest they have ever been for the US Armed Forces.

Of course they would. Brainwashing is a terrible thing.

So are re-enlistment bonuses.

Believe me, most of them can make more money in the private sector than their current duties in the armed service. They do it for reasons beyond money, something people like you will never understand but should be grateful they can comprehend it.

Lol. Your "news" is worse than censored.....it's editorialized.

ha ha ha ha...

impossible

funny though

Just think about all that undigested "NEWS." There is too much out there to show. Only some of it gets out to us. Censorship. You dig?

It's about motivation and resposibilities.

Excellent video, and I salute all the men and women who are stuck over there (I came very close to being one of them).

I believe that our current leadership needs to be tried for Treason for getting us into this.

dumb policy.
dumb president.
dumb voters.

I'm always against Nation Building because it can go on for decades and it ends up not working. Sigh...such foolish behavior that's getting so many people killed.

Oh? And what are they doing? Quite a few of the people I know in the Marines and Army re-enlisted simply because they wanted the money and honestly wouldn't be able to do anything once they were back in the civilian world.

I'm not going to run around trying to say the media doesn't distort facts, but I am just as hesitant when our military paints a great picture of success and how much the Iraqis allegedly love coalition forces.
