Invading a sovereign country, plunder its resource, trying to set up puppet government is not "democracy". I wouldn't be surprised that the very people that are trying to bring "peace" to the region has a black hand in its destabilization.
Divide and conquer, make them all hate each others, scape goats...
As for the military presence there, most are fed the "fighting for freedom, democracy" idiom and because they have no choice but to obey and carry out their orders. That then grew into a conflict, one between two stern believes; the belief of fighting for freedom and democracy and those that are actually fighting for the same. It's ironic that both would die for the same belief, not necessary the same cause.
I support the troops, bring them home.
Agreed. Bush and his cronies have plundered our own country much more than they've plundered Iraq or Afghanistan. The latest government estimate puts our wars in Iraq/Afghanistan at $1 trillion, footed by current and future taxpayers. That will fatten the next decade of quarterly earnings statements for anyone in (or associated with) the military industrial complex.Originally posted by: 0roo0roo
plunder? i dont think so following the same old leftist script is kind of sad when it doesn't match reality. wars cost a lot of money.

I'm not buying this one, because Insurgents have a history of just hiding in civilian dress, and being little pussies, because they know their anti American ass would get blown out of the little caves they hide in if they revealed themselves.
Oh so you mean that we hold those people accountable and prosecute those that break the law as opposed to our enemy who encourage and praise that kind of behavior? You do realize that people in the military are human and there are going to be a few bad apples right?
You must have mistaken ATOT with a forum that requires me to respond to your drivel.Originally posted by: JD50

They will to come home after all the (enemy) shooters are dead or captured. I can promise that the majority of troops over there will tell you the same.
So are re-enlistment bonuses.Re-enlistment rates are the highest they have ever been for the US Armed Forces.
Believe me, most of them can make more money in the private sector than their current duties in the armed service. They do it for reasons beyond money, something people like you will never understand but should be grateful they can comprehend it.
my dad was in iraq for 12 month and made more money then he did in the previous 3 years. if he had stayed another 6 months, he would have made almost as much in the 6 months as he did in the previous 12.
Private Military Contractor or he worked for Big Box Mart back home.

I'm always against Nation Building because it can go on for decades and it ends up not working. Sigh...such foolish behavior that's getting so many people killed.
It worked well For Japan.
And the Marshall Plan worked great for Europe, too.
we didn't have to design governemnt or invent nations in japan or western europe, germany, france, japan, italy, had already existing governments and goverment traditions.
on the other hand, iraq is not an ethnicity, race, or religion. Iraq was invented in the 20's by the british, and was designed to be a weak and broken country. there are citizens of iraq, but there are no iraqi's.

Wow... I can understand people who are against the war and dislike the president - I am one of them. What I can not understand is the the examples of outright contempt for members of the military. Sure there are some very sickening incidents but what do you expect? These people are involved in war and despite their training they are human so they are not perfect. It's no different than other threads I've seen where people bash the police for a few bad apples. You can't paint a broad brush across all members of the military or police department because of a small percentage of bad examples. I'd also like to note that it's possible to despise GWB and be against this war and still be thankful and respectful of the soldiers (past, present, and future) who protect us.
I hate GWB. I wish we were not involved in the ME. That said, thank you to the men and women of our armed forces. I hope you have a safe year and are back home with your families soon.

Yes, correct, the Sunni's, Shia and Kurds all want their separate countries. Only a dictator like Saddam could keep the country together with brutual violence.
Also Japan and Germany were aggressor nations who had to be defeated. Iraq was a broken well contained country. No need to invade it at all.

Give them separate countries and they will be at constant war, India and Pakistan come to mind here. Give them one unified government to live under and there will something for them to all work together for. Competing and opposing factions are an important part of a stable government, it's why ours works so much better than anything to come before it.
