Where ever you decide to buy it from, just get one. They are incredibly handy if you are into building systems at all. While you are at it, pick up a power supply tester as well.

The good thing about the one from geeks.com is that you can also attach 5.25"/3.5"/2.5" IDE/ATAPI devices (as opposed to the one from insidecomputer.stores.yahoo.net). The bad thing is that the one from geeks.com does not have SATA cable listed among the things included in the package (though it's shown on the picture). I ordered one from geeks (before this post) ... I'll let you know if SATA cable is included.

You will be happy to know that it does indeed include a (very short) SATA cable, as well as an adapter for the power supply. At least the one I ordered about a month ago did!

The one from pcmicrostore.com is great. The version linked has a power supply with both standard molex and sata power connector ends with power switches inline. The other ones either only give you one type or require you to carry around an additional power adapter/converter. This lets you safely plug the drive power connector in, then turn it on. They're great. I've been using several revisions of the young micro ones and never had any problems.

How much was the shipping from geeks.com? I need one of these, but it looks like it's out of stock. geeks has it for $14.99 which is a good price, but I hope they don't have rip off shipping.

FifthUnit has the same thing for $10.75, but charges $7 shipping.

But if the geeks one was about same after shipping, I'd order from them and get it faster.

Geeks shipping was $7. They ship from Memphis, TN. I placed the order on 24th (I think) and it was "shipped" next day, but in reality FedEx picked it up only today (28th). Suckers! I needed this thing before Monday ...

Got it today. It does come with a short (4") SATA cable. The cable is listed on the box (but was not at Geek's website -- that's why I got concerned in the first place).

I wish I had time to do the test ... Right now I'm busy filling my SATA Seagate using this thing with stuff from older 160GB external (which goes to my dad tomorrow). Why would you be so concerened with the performace of an external drive anyway? Just to see if its speed limited by the speed of USB 2.0 or if there is any other bottleneck in the SATA/USB2.0 converter? Anyway, if you point me to the tool to do the test and specify other conditions of the test (e.g., transfer of 50GB video, etc.), I'm willing to do it. Keep in mind though that my only computer for the moment is an IBM T60p ... (i.e., the source is likely be slower 2.5" Seagate 100Gb) ...
