I generally am not a huge fan of them, either. They have often bothered me for some reason. I really liked the pseudo-boss fight stuff in shadow of mordor: badasses, but not quite bosses. The problem with bosses is they change up the rules of the game only for one fight. They also often cheat badly with stupid and annoying crap.
The good thing is not all games have bosses and they do just fine. I prefer epic battles at the end of a game against a large numbe of foes than one insane single guy.
Ditto to everything. Boss fights are typically about learning and exploiting a particular mechanic. Over and over and over again. I've dislike boss fights since Mike Tysons Punch Out which was one boss fight after another, learning the weakness and repeating the same steps.
I much prefer events like liberating towns in Far Cry. There's no single boss to fight, but you have to plan your attack, choose your weapons and attack style, etc. The difficulty is increased from positioning of enemies, addition of snipers, etc.
