I generally am not a huge fan of them, either. They have often bothered me for some reason. I really liked the pseudo-boss fight stuff in shadow of mordor: badasses, but not quite bosses. The problem with bosses is they change up the rules of the game only for one fight. They also often cheat badly with stupid and annoying crap.

The good thing is not all games have bosses and they do just fine. I prefer epic battles at the end of a game against a large numbe of foes than one insane single guy.

Ditto to everything. Boss fights are typically about learning and exploiting a particular mechanic. Over and over and over again. I've dislike boss fights since Mike Tysons Punch Out which was one boss fight after another, learning the weakness and repeating the same steps.

I much prefer events like liberating towns in Far Cry. There's no single boss to fight, but you have to plan your attack, choose your weapons and attack style, etc. The difficulty is increased from positioning of enemies, addition of snipers, etc.

Bowser from New Super Mario Bros Wii. It took my daughters and me a few months off and on to finally beat him.

Megaman 5 had some awesome bosses, and I loved that boss music. Just so epic.

But the best boss battles have to be the two dragons in Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. It probably didn't help that I really didn't understand much about BG2 or DND, but man, that music and just how bad ass those two dragons were, made them such epic fights. When you hear that music start, you know you are in trouble!

Growing up my brother and I were huge fans of the Contra: Hard Corps boss fights on the Sega Genesis. They were so over the top and well animated.

Sigma from Megaman X. Awesome song that was really tense, 3 different forms, and was very challenging.

Seven force from Gunstar heroes was really fun because it had 7 diferent forms. Not the most challenging of bosses but still awesome. Also the music was hectic.

Red from Pokemon HGSS, he has the highest level of any trainer in the game and has a really diverse team. If its ypur first time and you dont have a team thats high enough level or the right pokemon, then it is really hard. And again, the song really sets the mood here.

A surprising good list you guys got going. My picks were:

Zelda II - Shadow Link
Metal Gear Solid - Psycho Mantis
God of War - Hydra and Minotaur
Gaiares - nearly all bosses

Zelda and God of War are already discussed. Psycho was a total 4th wall breaking mind efffff. I primarily put Gaiares down because full screen bosses were super rare in the Genesis era and those bosses were the very 1st time I played a game and said, 'Holy! what the... whoaaa.' Ya, I was young enough not to curse at home. Especially during the level with the epilepsy inducing background.

The first Doom which was stupid dumb.

The first Mario for N64 was epic at it's time in regards to the bosses.

The final boss in Chrono Trigger always just felt like I had no chance, so I always remember that one.

Also Ruby Weapon (I think? The under water one in FFVII) was actually somewhat of a challenge. I didn't really LIKE it, but it felt rewarding when you won.

And if we count PC games, The Lich King in WoW was always an awesome fight. I liked a lot of bosses in that game.

emerald weapon was in the ocean. ruby weapon was in the desert. One of them was a lot harder than the other. I think it was ruby cuz he would do a massive counter attack any time you cast Knights of the Round.

Yeah Ruby in the desert is harder. He can eject people completely from he fight. His HP was half but that just made Emerald more of an endurance thing.

Super Tennis on the SNES. Super addicting game. We tried beating the last player in the game (the devil I think) and it was near impossible. Beatable but I couldn't get my consistency down.

Ruby was easy if you knew the "right" way to fight it. I don't remember the combination myself, but there was an easy and fairly straightforward way to stunlock it.

I checked the interwebs and found something new:

W-Summon
Knights of The Round
Hades

Keep miming it. You dont even need to play games with Phoenix or anything.

KotR on Emerald is risky because you could go over the time limit (if you don't have the underwater breathing thing)

There's apparently a way to beat him by just standing in the corner. Zelda II was a real grind of a game though.

I recall just ducking and stabbing in the corner. He would keep trying to jump stab you, but would never connect and always get touched by your sword. I found him rather impossible, otherwise.

I thought those two fights were pretty bad, but most of the other dungeon bosses were pretty awesome. The Fire Hydra and chariot bull guy with mace always freaked me out and were quite difficult.

I don't think I ever beat Ruby. It was one of those playthroughs were I had maxed out everyone in my primary team: usually Cid/Tifa/Barret to level 99 and just all kinds of overpowered. Sephiroth was terribly easy at that point.

Emerald was such a chore and by the time I finally beat him, I started working on Ruby. I think it was only 5 losses, maybe, when I decided I was done with that game.

ANY battle with Emerald can easily go over the limit. You should always have the breathing materia no matter what your strategy is.

But the above technique was mostly for Ruby, cuz he can do a nasty counter attack to KOTR and Hades stuns hims so you dont have to worry about it.

The boss was basically as skilled as the under boss but ran a 2x speed. You had to not miss anything and fire down the lines.

Agree though, great tennis game.

The final boss in Kingdom Hearts 2 was a fun one. It was definitely lengthy even for an end boss, but there are plenty of moments in there that make it feel epic (Sora slicing apart entire buildings is just one exampe)
