OK...

My #1 Concerns: The Environment and Children's Needs/Issues. Basically, all I really care about is the future for our children, period.

Taxes are not a big deal to me... Mr Isla and I agree that if they are used wisely and for the greater good, then taxes are necessary.

Convince me, in your most polite way, please, why YOUR candidate will do the job for me.

Actually part of the reason why I'm supporting Bush is because of his environmental stance. I care alot about the world in which we live and enjoy the outdoors, so its in my best interest to see them protected. Our president has already started closing and attempting to close thousands of acres of national public land from among other things, motor vehicles. I greatly enjoy sensible 4 wheeling in my jeep, and most of us 4 wheelers aren't the beer guzzling, trash throwing, land destroying people most commonly think of. All the offroaders I know follow the ideas of the "Tread Lightly" program where everything with take into the woods is packed out, staying out of areas marked as no tresspassing, making no new trails or stream crossings, airing down your tires so you have a much lighter impact on the ground you're driving over, minimizing wheelspinning, etc. I'm a pretty able bodied 19 y/o who enjoys this offroading, but there are many, such as those who are in wheelchairs, those unable to hike, etc for who an offroad vehicle is the only way to enjoy the beauty of nature. Mr Gore would push to disallow these people on land that supposedly belongs to the public. I don't feel this is fair. Since our sport isn't destructive I completely oppose this thoughtlessness and expect to see it applied to many other areas of environmental concern. Thats part fo the reason I'm voting for bush.

Bush is for NMD (National Missile Defence) and would commit to having it 'operational' as soon as possible. That would be just peachy. Gore, at least, is wishy-washy on the issue. Typical, but preferential.

Restarting a worldwide arms race and inviting nuclear holocaust isn't the greatest for the environment.

Children need cities in which to live, uncontaminated water to drink.

Gore is the only other person likely to win.

Vote Gore.

I think you and Mr. Isla will do fine at the polls on Tuesday. You are both thinking about the future for your children. Consider your future and the now of your parents and grandparents. There are issues on the ballet that affect you and them too.

If I may,You have children that are school age. do they attend a public school,or a private school? Are you happy with there current education provider? If you could change anything about the way the school is providng education to your children, what would that be?

My children are all grown and are free to begin their own lives. The future for my grandchidren is of concern, but I'm not directly in their lives. I am trying to forcast the future of education. Home schooling has become very popular here, but I think certain social skills are not developed very well using that method. Just my opinion.

The only thing you really will be voting on is the nominee of Supreme court justices(if that even). As anyone who has taken social studies will tell you the man(or woman) voted president has no real (lawmaking) power. The real reason for the popular vote in this election is to guage the sentiment of the american people(peoples). It's called an electoral college. They elect the president. The people with the real power is CONGRESS. If you like the way things are going vote democrat or republican it doesnt matter. If you feel like government is oversteping its bounds and think that government is bought and sold by corporations would like to see it given back to the people vote for Nader or Brown.

How would you like your kids to be able to invest the money withheld for Social Security? More bang for the buck when it's time to retire.

How would you like your kids to be able to attend the school of your choice using public tax money? We have pretty decent public schools here, but not everyone does. Vouchers are a way out for kids in screwed up districts.

How about putting the tax money saved from Washington's clutches, into a savings account or money market fund for your kids? They could use it later for college, a car or home. You really have no idea how it will be wasted in Washington, but you know it will be spent well by your own family.

ToBeMe, LOL!

Compuwhiz, I know, but a 3rd party candidate won't win, at least not this time.

Tripleshot, my parents are FDR Democrats, and that's how I was raised. My instinct is to vote Dem, but I won't vote blindly. My kids are in public schools, but I am not thrilled.... why? Because in the name of getting more funding, we have a disproportionate number of disadvantaged and troubled kids bused in. My 2nd grader has 9 children in her classroom that are disruptive and probably should be in special classes. I used to work in the public system with emotionally and mentally handicapped kids, but I was really disgusted with the way things were run. I volunteer a lot of my time because they really need me, but they should be paying me. When they did pay me, it was a pittance and they treated me like crap. At least as a parent volunteer, I get dignity and respect.

If I could change the system, NO MORE BUSING. I'd rather that money be spent to improve the inner city schools instead of being spent to bus kids to schools that are just sweeping the problems under the carpet. I worked at one of these schools... the kids who are bused in are like neglected foster kids. The school gets more money, but it is not spent on them! At least not where I worked.

It also pisses me off that I pay high property taxes and the schools that are supposed to be 'mine' are overcrowded with, surprise, bused in kids!

I'm always ready to homeschool, in fact, I'm waiting in the wings! I see it as a last resort, but it may become a necessity.

So, that's where my head is at. Hmmmmm. First time I've revealed anything this political! Unfortunately, I do not see any solutions on the horizon. Do you?

As I understand what Al Gore has said,he has earmarked a large portion of the surplus for schools and teachers. Sounds like a recipe for getting rid of busing.

Busing is a local issue. You need to vote in your local election for School board administrators who will prioritize ridding the district of busing (Busing sucks!)and building more schools. You already know that property taxes pay the lions share of education costs. What about the lottery money in Florida? Doesn't that go to education? If not,why not?I have talked to our local school board members and they get a small portion from the federal government of what it takes to operate a school dostrict. But they use every nickle of what they getand they think that if Gore is elected, they willbe able to hire more teachers and teachers aids and this community is buildind schools every year. We have more schools than kids here, I think.

On the subject of schooling, Gore is supportive of even more federal control of the education system. You seem to prefer more local control, which is a Republican position. Many Dept. of Education bureaucrats would like to do away with the right to homeschool altogether, as it's an area they can't control.

It's been said before in other threads, but it seems impossibly optimistic to believe that education can be better controlled and regulated by Washington, when they've never been able to do it in any other area. Local control is much preferred.

Bush is against abortion. Now I don't know if he will be able to end it but he certianly won't support choice which I know Gore will. So if you care about the future then how about vote Bush so that maybe we can have a future.

My personal thoughts on abortion. Besides the immorality of it lets just think about it. It is getting rid of what is burdensome. That is why people have abortions, it inconveniences them. You know what is next. Well the old people are taking all the SS money. They can't drive. They're just sitting in old people homes waiting to die. Let's make a law that if the family doesn't want to take care of the elderly family member and doesn't want to pay for outside care let's just let them put them to sleep, you know kind of like a dog. Yeah, the old person doesn't have a choice, it's the choice of the one who has to take care of them, they have the choice.

That's what it is coming to.

Oh yeah. I hate abortion.

ISLA:

It is difficult for me to deconvolute children's issues from the whole. For instance, who would do a better job at keeping the peace? Who would enable a solid economy for families to flourish? Who would provide the best solutions for today's education crisis? Would greater choice help? Lower taxes may help some parents in their choice for private schooling. Who would do a better job with healthcare? Crime? The "war" against drugs? And what about Supreme Court choices which shape our society in which children are raised? The environment? How about retirement? It goes on.

I feel both candidates have positive positions on these matters. Some not so.

qacwac, I come from a family who takes care of their elderly. I am Spanish, like old country Spain, and the old ones are highly regarded. Not one of them has been in an old folks home, thank you! Nor will they ever be, if we can help it.

However, they were taxed for a lifetime for SS. I don't want some fat bottomed baby boomer getting what my parents put into the system. If someone is going to be screwed, let it be me.... Not them! Well, I'm going to get screwed anyway... I'll be sandwiched between taking care of my parents and my kids. Hooray.

As, for abortion, well, I think it sucks. However, it is a symptom of bigger problems and nothing will be solved unless we get to the root of the problem. That will not happen with this election, either way.

As I see it, one way or another, my generation... the post-boomers.... are in a heap o' trouble anyway.

tripleshot, don't worry, tomorrow is date night.
