24/7...

As for all you guys who turn it off... why don't you do folding@home or Find-a-Drug?

It doesn't cost you anything to leave them on... and you could alsway disconnect them from the internet if your worried about them being attacked..

That's about the oddest thing I've heard in this thread. I guess not many of us get free electricity and air conditioning. I suppose you leave your TV and lights on 24/7 as well? Maybe that's why we consume so damn much energy unnecessarily. Oh - why not leave your car running so it is ready to go all the time?

Leave it on 24/7 unless I'm going out of town or something for more than a day or two. Monitor sleeps after 10 minutes though. Kinda hard to sleep with that kind of night-light

Mostly on all the time. Sometimes shut it down at night. I do turn off the monitor if I know I'll be away for a while.

Wtf? Unless you're like "OMGWTFLOLBBQSAUCE-I-NEED-TO-BLINK-BUT-ITS-A-WASTE-OF-POWER-TO-LEAVE-THE- MONITOR-ON-SO-ILL-SWITCH-IT-OFF-WHILE-MY-EYES-GET-A-MILLISECOND-OF-REST" your switch should be....fine....

24/7, except for occasional maintenance work (dusting) that I do in my computer.

On 24/7, monitor set to sleep after 10min. Like Promethply said, if it's off, something's broken or the power tripped. I'd run Seti@home or Folding@home if you leave your computers on all the time. Do something productive with your computer when not in use. Torrent of some type usually downloading something like the latest anime or some other show. Laptop off unless in use.

4 PC's on 24/7/365. No screen savers; but set 'power' to turn off monitors after 5 minutes of idle. Running SETI@home CLI. All in a small room of 10'x9', and adjacent to my bedroom; but noise is not a problem. Heat so far hasn't been a problem, but we're just getting to the hotter days. Average room temp is about 76*F; with average Chassis temps at 30*C. All units have a UPS backup of APC 500's

Actually, running your computer 24/7/365 costs ~$330 a year. So if you shut it off for the 15 hours per day that you are at work or sleeping, you save a few hundred bucks.

On the other hand, leaving it on and running a distributed computing app is at least productive and a good way to spend that money. If you just leave it on for the sake of leaving it on though, you're costing yourself a little upgrade every year

I thought that it took much more power to start up the computer than it did to just leave it idle...?

Like.. running it for 10 hrs idle takes less power than shutting down/booting up.

I have a lappy, so it's either on or sleeping

On 24/7 holidays, weekends, special occasions, all ON.

Here's my reasoning and I'm sure others know this reasoning for leaving your PC on all the time.

What happens when you turn on your PC, current is shot through all of your parts turning everything on right? Everything heats up quickly. All your fans kick in, etc. Everything is all good to go. Then you get nice airflow going through your system and all the temperatures balance out.

What happens when you turn the system off every night before you go to bed? All the parts cool down. When you use the machine again (next morning or next day), you turn it back on and everything heats up again.

You can see where I'm going with this. What is happening is you keep on hitting that power button over and over, every day and you are doing more harm than good if you were to just leave your system on 24/7.

By leaving your PC on 24/7, everything stays around the same temperature and the airflow going through your case stays the same. It REALLY does not cost you anything at all (electricity bill wise) by leaving your PC on all the time. TRUST ME you don't notice it. Maybe $1 a day? MAYBE. It's worth it IMO.

Anyway..just my $.02
