Your contenders for GOTY?

So many good releases coming out this time of year. It got me to thinking about the contenders for game of the year awards. What are your picks?

For me I think these are contenders:

-Mass Effect 3
-Sleeping Dogs
-Guild Wars 2
-Borderlands 2
-Dishonored

Potentials that I haven't played or aren't released yet:
-Max Payne 3
-Mark of the Ninja
-Torchlight II
-XCOM: Enemy Unknown
-Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
-Assassin's Creed III
-Far Cry 3
-Hawken

My vote is split between Sleeping Dogs and Dishonored.

The Walking Dead.

XCOM would also get high marks from me.

Edit: While the game has many niggling flaws, Fallen Enchantress is probably the funnest game I have played this year.

I haven't played ME3 yet but I'd almost be tempted to give the nod to BL2. GW2 and TL2 aren't even in the discussion imo, XCOM was good but short and kind of one dimensional.

ME3/AC3/FC3/MP3/BL2 are probably the front runners since people love franchises.

Borderlands 2 is a much improvement over Borderlands 1, and it is very fun, despite some stupid game decisions on the part of the developer, and their unwillingness to listen to the community.

Walking Dead is a very well-made game, despite being quite short, and even though I haven't finished the first season yet, I love some of the hard decisions you have to make throughout the game. What I really love about the game though is that making the hard decisions is not just about selecting the "right" dialogue option, but also involves you having to physically carry out the action yourself. For instance, in most games, pointing your mouse to shoot someone will just be there to keep the player from being bored or to test his twitch reflex, but in this game, it really gets you emotionally involved. For instance, even though this isn't in the game, there might be a dog dying, and you know that it will turn into a zombie dog if you don't smash his head in. But instead of just choosing that option, and watch it unfold, you actually have to guide your foot and keep clicking the mouse button to smash its head in yourself, while the dog whimpers on the ground in pain.

There weren't any really standout 10 out of 10 games for me this year like last year when we had Skyrim and Witcher 2. Last year also had some really great games like Deus Ex:HR, Portal 2 and Dead space 2. For me this year had a lot of really good 8 out of 10 type games but none that really stood out ahead of the others such as:

Borderlands 2
Dishonered
Guild Wars 2
Mass Effect 3
Xcom

You could also mix in:

Diablo 3
Far Cry 3 (most likely will be good)
Max Payne 3
The Walking Dead

If ME3 had handled the conclusion better I'd probably end up going with it but right now I'd give the edge to Xcom. I went in blind and ended up really enjoying it although the game is a bit buggy (especially multiplayer).

Any game sites that give Diablo 3 GOTY are going to be instantly deleted from my favorites.

From pure playing time, Guild Wars 2 gets my vote. I was not impressed at all with Borderlands 2; fun for a while, but stopped playing around lvl 35... never even bothered downloading the Mechromancer class, even though I get it free.

Please do. I've bought it on recommendation from people on this board during the Black Friday Steam sale, and I definitely got my money's worth. If you are interested in zombies, and like story-based games, you are not going to regret your decision.

Maybe not. I really liked Hotline: Miami. And Max Payne 3 definitely would've taken it if there wasn't a cutscene every other minute.

for me, I kind of have to say Xcom. Not because it is as good as it could and should have been, but because it is better than most other things that came out this year.

Of course, does Baldur's Gate:EE count? That should top peoples lists merely on the Baldur's Gate portion.

Oh, and what about Legend of Grimlock?

Could best new MMO be The Secret World?

I think Legends of Grimrock was just great and deserves something but hard to pick. Maybe we need a 'best retro' category.

I was gonna say I was susprised not to hear about Guild Wars 2, but someone mentioned it but only as 'for long gameplay'. Not saying much.

Good to hear Fallen Enchantress is great - the company tried to make up for Elemental and gave free copies of the new game, don't see that much.

There were some very good games this year/so far. Darksiders 2 was excellent same for Borderlands 2, but they were really more of the same and just expanding on their previous titles. Plenty of other excellent games, a lot of which have been mentioned already as well.

Yea, I would agree with you. The last game that was a real standout GOTY quality game IMO was Skyrim. Borderlands 2 was OK, but not really a game of the year type game to me.
Diablo 3 was OK too, but marred by the auction house and always on line requirement. ME3--dont even want to think about how disappointing that game was. I havent played any of the other games, but am kind of intrigued by Xcom. Might try it when it gets cheap.
