XCOM. (very surprised at the amount of people mentioning ME3)

Have you played ME3? It has been trolled to kingdom come by the butthurt sore babies over its ending. In every other way it was a spectacular game, easily the best I played this year. Better than ME2, which itself was a fine spectacle. The fact ME3 has 2.5/5 on amazon right now is genuinely criminal and I think the secret police should be sent to round people up over it.

Walking Dead and/or Journey. Haven't played Journey... PC purist. So Walking Dead.
Last year it was Portal 2.
The reasoning is simple. It's a game with less videogame attributes and yet it's awesome. Minimum pre-existing game specific skills or knowledge required, widest audience and it doesn't suffer from it. And it's awesome.

Skyrim was the one game recently that met/exceeded my expectations. None of the DLC really seemed that intriguing though, so I have not purchased them. I am concerned though that Bethesda is going to go the online route and dilute the single player experience of their new games.

well, the news is all over the place, with a handful of screenshots, about TES online. I think 2014 is release time?

Nothing about that being the end of real Elder Scrolls, but as Shorty says, it's a near certainty.

As long as diablo 3 doesn't make any "best of" lists, I have no strong opinion for which games should.

I've played most of the games mentioned here, but the majority of my gaming time went into starcraft 2 really.

Diablo 3 really is the standout game this year for me though, as being the biggest disappointment I've had from a game... Definitely beat out the old champs in this bracket by a lot.

Yeah I have played it - I am not one of those people to go around everywhere giving it 1/10 or whatever, but in my opinion the ending was awful and the story was what kept me playing the game - so the ending made a large part of the total experience for me. ME's combat etc is functional rather than brilliant so when the story part of the game fails there is no way it can be game of the year for me. (although it is still worth a 7 or 8 out of 10)

Nothing about that being the end of real Elder Scrolls, but as Shorty says, it's a near certainty.

I don't know if it will be the end of the traditional Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, I believe they are developed by different studios from the MMO - although it would be strange for there to be an MMO release while singleplayer releases still occured. However the people who made Fallout 3/Skyrim are not working on the MMO, so they can still produce similar games, just maybe not in the elder scrolls universe (which is my opinion is fairly boring and generic) but in the fallout universe (which I personally prefer) or a new IP.

I don't believe the Elder Scrolls MMO will be the end of singleplayer Elder Scrolls, since the previews of the MMO look horrific. If it were to succeed, then I would agree that single player ES would likely end, but it looks like it will bomb badly.

As far as pure fun, I'd have to go with Mass Effect 3 or FTL. FarCry 3 looks like it might be good though.

Legend of Grimrock. Never thought I'd harken back to my Eye of Beholder days with this much glee. Took a steam sale to do it tho. I feel like I ripped off the developer... anyone else ever feel this way?

Does Dayz count? I was just thinking about the time I spent playing Dayz, and no game this year captured my attention that Dayz did until the hacking ruined it. Either way I absolutely can't wait for the standalone to be released and start to see some polish on the game. A true hardcore PC game is just what the doctor ordered.

this year i think the MOD/indie games, were just as good than many "AAA" titles....if not better

FTL, Black Mesa, Misery, Dayz and Chivalry

all were really great games...sure they do lack in some things, mostly tecnical side...but they were really fun

I agree. I see people posting that games this year have sucked, but I feel like this has been the best year for gaming for me in many years. That is mostly due to a huge amount of very fun smaller budget games that are better than any so called AAA game has been for years. I think those who feel it is a down year just haven't played the good Indie games this year.

I'm interested in your opinion on GOTY. As far as I'm concerned I couldn't care less about the mainstream media. I have heard those opinions ten times over.

The spaceghost kid aside, the one thing that really urked me about ME3 was that I took Garus and Tali on my suicide charge at the end, and after we get obliterated and I gimp my way through to the end I see them healthy as can be crashlanding on a tropical paradise with joker.

Really kinda ruined any sort of immersion for me.

The Walking Dead deserves it because the game really succeeded in bringing much needed attention to the story-driven adventure genre, and in transforming the zombie genre from mindless mayhem to gut-wrenching human drama, where the real horror lies not in facing the zombies, but in facing the more primal instincts latent in each one of us.

For me the choice is pretty easy and that would be Borderlands 2. I don't know exactly why this game is so much fun but it just is. Maybe it is the constant quest for better loot or trying to find new hidden areas. Whatever it is, the game is just FUN!. I am almost through my second play through and already getting ready for a third and I still have yet to log a single minute of multiplayer.
