Let's see if my memory serves me right. These are the desktop CPUs I've had:

386 DX-33 (4MB RAM)
486 DX2-66 (4MB or maybe 8MB RAM, don't remember exactly)
Pentium 133 or 166 (non-MMX)
Pentium II 300MHz

Celeron 700Mhz (Same 440BX mobo with an upgrade card to replace the Pentium II. Bus overclock allowed to run the Celery at 1 GHz, letting me enjoy Doom 3 at playable frame rates with a Geforce 3 Ti 200)

AMD Sempron 2 GHz (ran nicely at 3 GHz. However, mobo ports started failing due to the bus overclock after about a year and my family had to throw it away)

Core 2 Q9400 (8GB. My first RAM maxed out build)

Core i3-2100 (32GB RAM. I know what you guys are thinking. What a waste. I turned off the paging and never had any issues like out of memory messages)

Core i7-3770 (upgraded the i3 on the Z77 mobo. Same 32GB Corsair RAM)

Core i7-5775C (Had to go with 32GB Kingston DDR3-1866 RAM since the Corsair RAM didn't play nicely with the Gigabyte Z1 Sniper mobo.)

Used to own an HP Pavilion laptop with Core i5-2400 (16GB RAM. HP support site said max was 8GB yet 16GB was seen and used by Windows without any issue. Laptop sold to my friend).

Now own a Thinkpad with i7-3820QM (32GB RAM) and an Asus N550JV laptop with i7-4700HQ (12GB RAM. Hardly use this laptop).

EDIT: Adding the RAM where I remember it.

Played around with various computers but never bought one until they had full color 3d graphics.

Pentium 166
Cel 300A (heck yeah) plus 2 more CPUs on the same BX motherboard.
P4 1.3Gz
A couple core 2 duos.
Some dual core AMD chips.
AMD Rana triple.
750 Lynnfield
1055t hex core
I5 2500k
I7 3370

And a mess of laptops all with dGPUs.

Many more built for friends and family.

Plus too many graphics cards to count.

After the i7 3770 laptops became powerful enough to do most things so right now the best computer in the house is a laptop.

There might be an AMD 3950 with an NVIDIA 1070 headed my way soon...
A quick search of Newegg has determined that I have only remembered about half...

Intel 8088
Motorola MC 68000 w/ Fat Agnus (MMU) co-processor Amiga 2000C goodness for several years
Cyrix 166+GP Overclock and it would run slower!!!
Pentium 166MMX@200mhz used this system for years!
K6-2 500@575mhz
Duron600@1ghz Most badass
T-bird 1400@1540mhz
XP1600+@1.85ghz
XP2100+@2.35GHZ
Pentium4 1.6ghz@2.4ghz
Barton 2500+@2.43ghz
A64 3000+@2.4ghz
I've had many, many, more systems but these are the ones that were my Gaming boxes.
I could not begin to pick this list back up. There was the dark age, when I was console gaming with my kid, and used a Athlon 64 X2 3800+ for approximately 7yrs. But then the flood gates opened again. The Mrs. kid, and I, have used dozens and dozens of CPUs since then. And had many more pass through my hands.

In service actively at the moment - 5700G@4.85GHz boost, 5600G@4.7GHz all core, 5800X@5.05GHz boost eco mode, 3700X stock, 2x i5 8300H aging HP gaming laptops.

I wish I could do that. Besides egg and Amazon, I have sourced CPUs from many places. Computer shows, FS/FT forums, Directron, Mwave, Tiger Direct, Dell, Ebay, B&H photo, local computer shops, Newspaper Classified section, and I am certain there are others I am forgetting.

Newegg earned most of my business during my most active years but there was also B&H, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Adorama, Amazon, Tiger Direct, and Dell.

I often checked Fry's but I don't think I ever bought much from them.

Notably the Pentium 166, 1.3 GHz P4 and original Core2Duo were Dells. The Dells I bought for myself were among the most reliable systems along with the hand built i5-750. One Dell I bought as a gift was not reliable. It was pretty easy to put a better PS and GPU in a stock Dell to make a decent gaming rig.

yes, I'm making fun of the way the way people used to call the case and everything in it "the CPU."

They still do, actually. Try telling an executive or CEO that more cores does not mean faster performance unless the application is designed to take advantage of the extra cores. And if you do, they will think you are trying to be smart and still pay more for the extra cores.
