Chevy Small Block:
Why? Most versitile, well supported engine ever. Nothing comes close to having been in different platforms nor the sheer number of aftermarket options.
The LS1, 2, 6, and 7 engine line.
Why? Compact, simple, powerful. Lighter than engines with half the displacement.
MOPAR 426 Hemi.
Why? Legendary. Nothing else has had what it has, and nothing else will ever have what it has. The beast was never even attempted to be tamed. It's still in production as a crate engine, and many VERY high end racing engines are based on it.
Duesenberg supercharged straight 8.
Why? It was an eagle in an era of pidgeons. It pushed a car to 150MPH in an era when aerodynamics referred to nothing other than swoopy styling. It was the epitome of performance in it's era.
