I'm just wondering what most people use around here. I've down a little bit of web development as a personal hobby, but nothing much. The webpage that I have right now is just kind of a personal page and I use it to share stuff with friends. I wrote the first page just using Notepad so I could re-learn HTML syntax, and then I started using MS Frontpage because I can get it for $5 from my school (Purdue). What do you guys use and why?

If you want to check out my webpage, here it is. Its nothing flashy, and needs some serious updating, but its got some cool stuff I think.

I usually use Dreamweaver to code my personal web page. Why? Well I've used for number years and like its combination of WYSIWYG and source code editing modes.

I use dreamweaver for my personal sight. It usually puts out pretty good looking code, and is a hell of a lot faster than my old notepad / pico bad typing code.

I used to just use vi to maintain the intranet at work then got tired of using it to maintain tables, etc.
Dreamweaver is the best I think it was $350 or so. My work bought it for me.
I did test out Macromedia Contribute $99 and it's awesome for the average joe. I only had one MAJOR huge beef with the trial I used. It doesn't let you modify nor see the source. If it let you do that I'd recommend it to many. Maybe with Macromedia Contribute 2.0 whenver that comes out they'll add that ability.

I never even knew there was a Macromedia Contribute. How does it compare to the WYSIWYG editor in Dreamweaver? Being unable to edit source would really bother me though. Even with GoLive or Dreamweaver, most of my HTML is coded by hand. It's a lot faster than going through menus and dialog windows for me.

Editplus - http://www.editplus.com/ Many of the features of some of the other editors and wasn't too expensive - $30. When I reloaded my computer I managed to lose the license info, I emailed them and they sent a new one within 24 hours. Plus it was the only one I found that understood PICK basic (UniVerse, Prime, PICK, etc.). You can actually even build your own syntax file. There are LOTS of syntax files that were user contributed on the website. It's free to try for 30 days to see if you like it. I've converted one of the other programmers here at the hospital to it as well.

Edit -
BTW this is really more of a programmer's editor but it does have some browser integration.

Dreamweaver or TextPad. I love how the coding looks on Dreamweaver, really easy to know where you are.

I just wish Arachnophilia was still Windows based vs. Java based. I still have a Windows based version saved to CD and hope it never gets FUBARed.

Dreamweaver seems nice. I'd like to use it and all, but unfortunately I don't have money to blow on software. I guess I'll just have to stick with FrontPage for now.

Dreamweaver is ok, I have been using it for a while, but Homesite is much more code friendly. Dreamweaver wont insert your image dimensions and you cant drop an image into your code (only in the design view and even then you have to have at least one character in the table).

Anyone who says that doing something in basic notepad or textpad hasnt ever developed on a large scale (can you imagine scrolling though 400+ lines of code on a .asp page to find out that you forgot a " somewhere?). The biggest thing for me is color coding (all your tags are certain colors), the ability to drop stuff into my code without having to go back and manually edit something everytime I do, and being able to lay out my site's tables or divs in a menu.

You can find those things in most every html editor out there, but I do not recommend using a wysiwyg editor as your only source of coding (good for quickly getting your page laid out sometimes, but you will almost ALWAYS have to go back and change things). We have enough Fugly sites out there
