4k. If my GPU complains I'll do 1080P.

We'll get there probably two generations from now on the card. Monitor I'm not so sure of but I can't imagine it being more than 3 years on some sale site.

People have said cost will remain high on discrete graphics cards, 1080P monitors will stay expensive, heat will be too much from cards, more than 128mb or 256mb or 512mb etcetera cards will be too impractical or expensive and they all have been wrong.

My GTX970 was $297 near the beginning of the year, as was a (refurb) Samsung 4k 28" monitor, so really we aren't that far off. I'm sure there are plenty of games out there that I couldn't run well at 4k, but I so rarely game now that it doesn't matter much.

I have 3 monitors in use right now a 32" 3840x2160, 30" 2560x1600 and 24" 1920x1080, I've filled in 3 of the boxes but I primarily use my 4k panel for gaming and desktop use, the others barely get turned on these days.

Hmmm, I remember another poster stating in a thread the he felt it was wrong of tech sites to treat 1440P as the new 1080P. I think this poll, thus far, seems to back that idea up. If the results are like this on anandtech.com what are they in the real world?

Funny how a posts by just a few people would have you think the whole gaming world has gone 1440P or 4K yet the vast majority are still rolling with 1080P like I am.

For me it's the law of diminishing returns. My $1250 road bike works fine.. not gonna spend another $5k for a marginal upgrade. That's how I feel about the differences between 1080p and 4K and the money needed to require 4K to work properly. 1080P or 1200P are 75-80% as good for about 66-75% less money. It's basically the "sweet spot" where you get the best "bang for the buck" .. the same reason I don't upgrade a perfectly functioning 2600K system in favor of a 5820K or whatever.

I'm on a TV, but now that I looked at the poll again I realize I misvoted. I do use 1080p, but I downsample wherever possible to 1080p from 4k with DSR. I didn't read the options well enough. Though, prior to Memorial Day this year I was just straight 1080p as my GTX 275 wasn't up to much else.

I actually bought my 4k display for work - it's effectively four 1080P displays for my purposes.

We've know for years displays will be like add on sound cards. Years ago onboard audio kind of sucked, then it was good enough. Only the tea hardcore buy sound cards now.
Displays will be the same is 1080P or 4k or something in the middle good enough? It will happen just what is the limit?

I bought a soundcard, but only because I broke* all the audio-out ports on my computer and it was cheaper to buy a soundcard than replace either the case or motherboard.

*I broke the audio-out port on the case by cracking the plastic ring around the outside that held the 3.5mm jack in place. I broke the audio-out port on the motherboard by snapping off a 3.5mm plug in it. I'm bad at audio-out ports apparently.

Similar. My Core 2 Quad box's onboard ALC888 codec died one day earlier this year. Needed some sort of audio, so sound card it was.

Funny I almost did too my front mic port works but it sounds horrible. I ended up getting a longer cord and connect to the back port. Point is noone of us were buying it for better audio performance. We we buying to replace something that is broken.

I'm really not a fan of how people just toss out (what I refer to as) "p-numbers" like they're legit. You see this a lot with video games and how they talk about rendering at 970p or something silly like that. Now, most astute people understand that they're most likely referring to a 16:9 ratio, but there's technically nothing that mandates the aspect ratio, which is the problem that you ran into. Although, it's even worse because the poll states 1080p and 1200p, which is actually two different ratios (16:9 and 16:10 respectively) yet using the same designation.

I actually wonder if most people that spout off p-numbers even know what the 'p' stands for. Imagine how many weird looks you'd get if you said 1080i.
