4k. If my GPU complains I'll do 1080P.
My GTX970 was $297 near the beginning of the year, as was a (refurb) Samsung 4k 28" monitor, so really we aren't that far off. I'm sure there are plenty of games out there that I couldn't run well at 4k, but I so rarely game now that it doesn't matter much.
We'll get there probably two generations from now on the card. Monitor I'm not so sure of but I can't imagine it being more than 3 years on some sale site.
People have said cost will remain high on discrete graphics cards, 1080P monitors will stay expensive, heat will be too much from cards, more than 128mb or 256mb or 512mb etcetera cards will be too impractical or expensive and they all have been wrong.
