Your most expensive videogames

This question covers both PC and console games so the post couldn't be made in those sections.

What's your MOST expensive videogames in your history of gaming? That includes the price of the hardware if you purchased it specifically for that game.

Mine are:

Gran Turismo 7 (bought PS5 just for it)

Alan Wake (bought Xbox 360 for it)

Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes (bought a Wii for it back when it cost $500)

Metal Gear Solid 4 (bought a PS3 for it, years in advance and waited two years for it to be released)

Forza Horizon 3 (while didn't get Xbox One X specifically for it, I did spend an extra $40 for the DLC for this game. I almost NEVER buy DLC, certainly not at full price so that gives you an idea of how much I was addicted to this game).

Last Of Us (It came bundled with my PS4 and while it wasn't really a reason to buy the PS4, it made the decision easier and after playing it, I felt like I got my money's worth for the console purchase. Detroit Become Human and Uncharted 4 further enhanced my enjoyment of my PS4)

Funny thing is, I can't recall a single PC game for which I specifically got a brand new DIY PC. That means I'm a sucker for console exclusives and on PC, I either tone down the settings or wait for my next upgrade cycle to experience the game in all its smooth glory.

World of Tanks. I've bought premium for a couple of years, bought gold, bought premium tanks. But while gaming, I've spent very little on other games.

Yeah, probably WoT for me, used to play it a bunch, bought lots of gold and premium tanks and the like. Though, if you count building/buying something so that I could play a specific game, probably Doom 3, had a custom build done for over $2500 back in the day, and it came with the game. Or rather, the computer had a BFG 6800 GT, which came with a free copy of Doom 3.

I bought a used ASUS Geforce 3 Ti 200 specifically for that game. Turned out to be too much for my Celeron 700 MHz and had to overclock it to 1.05 GHz on my 440BX mobo. Got like 25 fps and I was happy with that!

Outside of a sub for WOW for maybe 24 months, I'd say the recent Hogwarts Legacy.

Picked up the $70 deluxe edition for my wife, but my HTPC was having issues running it, so I upgraded from a 2200g to a 5600x (Used, $90), upgraded the mobo from an A420M to a B550m (used, $100).

Actually the only game I've ever specifically upgraded a computer for, otherwise I've generally bought what I know will work well with my current build.

I know with great certainty that y'all going to think after reading this : Of course , a Dutch man.

I bought most of my games in the stores discount section when the stores still existed during the pc booming era.
And these days my online bought games are also bought during the season discount offers.

I would think 39,99 euro once or around 43 dollars (current exchange rate) is the highest paid price for a game. But i am not sure.
I bought a GPU video card long ago and that was bought for to play games. And that was around 369 euro or 396 dollars (current exchange rate) i think at the time.
I do occasionally some customization to the hardware , better modified coolers but that is about it. Those modifications are some additional costs.

40 UKP I think. I've only once paid for DLC that I can think of, for XCOM2 WOTC.

I've never upgraded a system for a specific game, and I haven't been a console player since N64, so I guess whatever the last game I bought at full price was (rare, maybe mount and blade 2 at release?). If you want to count total cost I guess wow for monthly sub.

Woops. Now that you mention it. I forgot the N64 in the pre 2000 era. I bought the N64 game Turok at release date , (i think 1997) at that time for 199 Dutch gulden. That would be like around 70 euro or 75 dollars (current exchange rate) these days.

@William Gaatjes you do indeed come off as very, very Dutch, but only because you mentioned it and now all I can visualize in my head is Goldmember from Austin Powers 3 when I read your comments. Thanka for that.

By the by, do you love goooooold?
Always. Great material. Even though we are attracted to it because it is such a handy material in every day life : It seems very inert or non reactive. Such seemingly contradictions makes me feel it all the way to "ze by attraction defined pillar of love".

Highest cost of any single game:
World of Warcraft approx. $3600
~purchase of games & expansions (multiple game accounts) $300
~purchase of game services (transfers, character changes, etc) $300
~hardware, namely several versions of n52te/Nostromo/Tartarus $300
~The biggest cost of course, subscriptions $2700 (over 15 to 16 years)
This doesn't include any extras purchased along the way like in-game mounts and pets in the Blizzard store.

Highest cost of any single purchase game (no sub fees):
SNES Street Fighter II Turbo approx. $820
~Console: $200
~Game: $70 (astronomical for console games in 1992)
~H/W: $500
This was one of my favorite games in the arcades. The SNES got really close to the arcade quality for the game itself. All of this was purchased for just THIS game.
The hardware besides the console itself were (2) custom arcade joysticks made with actual arcade hardware.

I also bought an N64 only to be able to play Killer Instinct at home, but it didn't include extra hardware, etc. Just the standard console and game.

Honorable mention:
I built a new PC when Far Cry and then Half-Life 2 / CS:S released, and spent around $2500 on the system. I knew there would be other uses and other games for the newer PC, but I had been using an only 2 year old system, and I rebuilt new because of these games releasing (and wanting to be able to run them maxed out).

The wow thing is similar for me, I started at launch, took a break from halfway in bc until end of release, maintained account from then until now. I've been through several systems in that time but never upgraded for wow specifically. I can trace a similar lineage back for EQ, from kunark through.. something, whatever was like two expansions past luclin? Or something?

Can't remember ever paying much.

Used to always be second-hand (the art of Ebay sniping!) or on sale (remember buying Baldur's Gate without knowing anything about it, simply because it was - I think by mistake - included in the sale with a big markdown, despite being a new release). And then Steam sales became the only way to go (not to mention Epic giving away more free games than I can work out what to do with - don't even have the disk space to install them).

1136-ish days total for your numerous Steam games. How many days /played in WoW? I'm at around 850 days on just my main (20K+ hours). I was really only gone from the game for part of Legion and all of BfA.
Not sure, not in front of my computer right now but it's a lot. Unfortunately I'm also without access to my original account so whatever my time is, it's missing vanilla-bc on several very high hour characters (I had more free time then). I know my main in EQ had over 365 days played bc I specifically remember passing that, but I'm likely at least over 400 between my main and my primary alt from back then. Probably a hundred or two days between eq2, guild wars 2, older blizzard games, and a few other games that were prior to steam. Hell, I 100%'d San Andreas AND FF7 back in the long, long ago, and at best I had some paper guides for those.

Edit: fuck, forgot about AHL/the specialist/Opera/tribes 2/TFC/quake2 DM/quake3 DM, at least a few thousand hours in those, easy. I used to play that shit from noon to sun-up for weeks on end.

You have completionist syndrome

In terms of time is money, you seem to have sunk millions into your gaming habit

Wish all of us could be so lucky.

I justified building a PC for Flight Sim 2020 and picked up the Logitech Yoke, throttle, and rudder pedals. My justification was it was cheaper than renting a plane for X hours.

It's been entertaining and I didn't go overboard on the build. I did pretty good getting a $200 1660 Super when the prices of video cards were nuts and it turned out to be probably the best value available long after I was enjoying it.

I realized that I created my Steam account when I purchased HL2 Orange Box, and to this day the majority of time played (and $ spent) on Steam remains in that purchase. It still pales in comparison to WoW, of course.

It actually seems that the hours spent in HL2 and CS:S were not tracked, as most of these 741 hours now shown were from Tom Clancy's The Division. Go figure.

I don't realistically feel I could have made millions in my teens and 20's, or in my very, very precious evenings at this point in my life. It's a hobby and everyone needs one.

But yes, I am a completionist. It feels really really good to slide one of my games into my 'completed' section, even if it's polluted with games with multiplayer only achievements.

Man you might be steam's greatest lurker or something, or at least in the running. Our accounts are close to the same age (or at least they can both vote) but I think I've afkd more time than you've played lol.

Mechwarrior 3.

By the time I saved up enough money to build a PC to play it, Mechwarrior 4 was out so I bought that instead. Eventually got 3 on eBay for like $5, but...

Second place would probably be EVE-Online. I was pretty active for about 4 and a half years, and during most of that period had three active accounts for alts. So, $45/month x 54 months.

Oh god that's not second place I never added that up before. Fuuuuuuck.
