I think I liked the first one better because it had more of the Indiana Jones type vibe to it and wasn't too over the top (except for the end). The 2nd one feels more like a ridiculous action movie - fighting helicopters and tanks and whole armies? come on...

I still haven't finished it and I got it on release day...

God of War 1 was not "combo based" but "mashing based". Not even fast paced, really, compared to something like Ninja Gaiden. It mattered very little how you attack in GoW, as long as you dodge and block correctly. Has this changed for GoW3?

I was more comparing it to Demon's Souls... compared to Demon's Souls it's fast and combo based. Compared to Ninja Gaiden it's not fast, but IMO it's still combo based if you play on any difficulty past normal. Yeah if you keep it easy of course you can mash and get through it, but the option is there to make it hard.

It's been a while since I played, but I think it was on the hardest difficulty (not the unlockable one) and I used about one or two sequences over and over. There was no pressing reason to do anything else since you can always cancel from the sequence into a dodge. (Of course when a QTE lights up you have to punch in the requisite inputs.) We may have a difference in terms here but that's not what I'd call a combo-based game.

Again, I was mainly comparing it to DS. Yes it's fairly unbalanced in that a few combos own pretty much anything, but in GoW3 there were a few new weapons that made things more interesting than in the past. Not as complex as ninja gaiden or even devil may cry, but COMPARED TO DEMONS SOULS (which has no combos, and is fairly slow) it's more combo based.

Demons souls has some simple combos, like dash spin-attack, and the fighting is actually more fast paced than GoW IMO. It requires a higher reaction speed, where in GoW they broadcast that you have to dodge for 2 or 3 seconds with dramatic animations. This is especially true when fighting the boss of 1-4, which is harder than anything GoW has thrown at me. GoW is simple with mashing square and triangle and the occasional dodge (yes, on hard difficulty). In DS you have to deal with placement and non-trivial dodging/parry/blocking with stamina and more punishing checks.

With demons souls, each weapon has tons of attacks that you can do (I'm assuming you haven't even touched half of them) and intricate differences between each weapons.

That said, their combats shouldn't really be compared. They have totally different feelings.

You must have the Uncharted series. Must.

And MGS4 is highly overrated.

I dont know why but Uncharted 2 got repetitive for me (amazing graphics tho, the story was meh)

My vote is for Batman: AA (button smasher, but try to solve all the puzzles!!) Great sound, video, acting, story.

Zokudu-

What types of games do you like?

We could all reccomend Super Game 17 to you, but if it is from a genre you hate, it won't do much for you no matter how good it is. I don't think I've seen a bad game given a reccomendation in this thread(outside of MGS4- but a lot of people love it for some reason), but if you are into say go kart style racing Mod Nation Racer is a game you absolutely won't want to miss(but avoid it like the plague if you aren't into them).

Not as complex as ninja gaiden or even devil may cry, but COMPARED TO DEMONS SOULS (which has no combos, and is fairly slow) it's more combo based.

I would say Demons Souls is nigh *entirely* combo based, just not in the button mashing sequence style of GoW or DMC. Take even a simple mob like a blue eyed Tower Knight- walk up to him and hit him once and then back off. You could probably do that for an hour or so(do they ever run out of grass?) and never kill him- or- you can roll up to him, knock his shield out of his way and then do a combo strafing around him and likely kill him in a few seconds. Most of the mobs in Demon's Souls are comparable, you need to do something to deal with their defense before you can really do any damage at all to them. This is very different then GoW or DMC which use combos heavily, but don't rely on them for basic gameplay nearly as much as Demon's Souls.

With demons souls, each weapon has tons of attacks that you can do (I'm assuming you haven't even touched half of them) and intricate differences between each weapons.

And then you have the differing levels of upgrades and how that ties in with strategy(ie- swapping between a heavy bleed effect weapon after you get the bleed on to a straight dmg weapon, or swapping from something like the Shredding Spear to a real dmg dealing choice once you get their armor beat down).

I don't really know what I'm looking for honestly. I want to avoid largely FPS games just because I've found them a chore to use a controller. (Even the shooting in the Uncharted 2 Demo I tried was irksome).

I really like RPGs (I downloaded FF7-9 off the store already) so I think Demons Soul will fit the bill nicely (You guys really talked me into this one). Also God of War III even with its relative ease of "button mashing" seems like fun as a button mashing action game.

I probably want to grab a fighting game. I heard about Blazblu or something like that may be a good choice?

If you like RPGs, get Valkryia Chronicles. Its absolutely great. My friends who played both VC and FF13 agree that VC is a much better game.

agreed on all fronts. MGS4 is probably the ONLY game I have regretted buying this gen.

on that note, HOT SHOTS GOLF: OUT OF BOUNDS!

I wasn't too sure about MGS4 when I got it because I never finished the one before that on the PS2. But I ended up LOVING MGS4! Amazing story, amazing and fun gameplay too. Hard to find both those features in games these days.

Did you google the part of the story you missed first? Or did 4 stand on its own well enough?

Only one post about Ratchet and Clank? Tsk tsk!

Agreed! Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is one of the best games ever!

It's sort of cartoonish, so you may dismiss it as a child's game, but I assure you.... the game is awesome and the graphics rock!

You can get it cheap now since it's an older game.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a used copy of it. I got one for my son recently for about $18 on eBay. So incredibly worth it.
