operaghost,

I noticed that the dns server is not responding / resolving as well.

Try typing in static DNS entries. I believe they've assigned 4 dns servers, try them one by one.

If you can resolve to 20% of the site, you probably have dns cache on your machine.

Im in vancouver, washington and I now have a neutered ATTBI connection. Previously thru @home I could max my download using multiple computers and multiple ftp sessions at right below 1.2MB/sec (thats the big megabyte). Now with my new dynamic connection to att, my downloads will jump up to around 500K/sec, then get throttled back down to 250K/sec and stick there. Also during these downloads, thats it, no other computer has any bandwidth worth speaking of (MAYBE 2KB/sec). its disgusting, but it is better than dialup.

operaghost, please let us know if you get it figured out. I'm having the same problem here in Seattle. When I plug the cable line into my machine directly, it works w/o a problem. If I go into the router, nothing. I must have the settings wrong. If anyone knows the linksys settings we should use for the new @home stuff, please do tell.

Thanks!

I too am getting neutered speeds of around 55KB/sec in the SF Bay Area. Before I chat up tech (there was a waiting list of 600 earlier today) anyone know why?

Okay guys, I found some instructions on the newsgroups that seem to work for me. Try this:

ATTBI Switchover Instructions for Linksys Users

I've noticed a few people experiencing trouble with the switchover if they have a Linksys Cable Router, so let me walk you through a simple procedure that WORKS. I have already read this procedure over the phone 6 times, with 100% success (in Seattle, if that matters).

1) Go to »192.168.1.1/[?] to access your Linksys's admin pages.

2) In SETUP tab, change the "Domain Name" to "@attbi.com" (may not be necessary, but it beats having "@home" there)

3)Select "Obtain an IP Address Automatically." Depending on your firmware version, you may be prompted that your connection will be reset when you press "Apply."

4) Set all three DNS servers to 0.0.0.0 so that they are dynamically set when the router gets it's info from the cable modem. I've seen some cases where even with the dynamic IP address assignment, the DNS assignment remains static.

5) Hit "Apply."

6) When the settings are saved and you are prompted to continue, press the "CONTINUE" button.

7) Go to the "STATUS" tab at the top of the page. Check the WAN portion (not the LAN portion) to make sure you have an IP address and Default Gateway other than 0.0.0.0. If so, then you are golden.

8) CLOSE ALL BROWSERS to reset your browser cache. I've seen a lot of people complaining about only being able to access the AT&T switchover pages ? even after making changes. It's your browser cache. Trust me - it happened with me.

9) If you have your Linksys router running DCHP and issuing your client addresses on your home network, renew the DHCP leases on ALL your client machines. You can either reboot, or do it this way, depending on your OS: Windows 9x: Start, Run, type "winipcfg" then press ENTER, then press the "Renew All" button. Windows 2000: Start, Run, type "command" then press ENTER, then type "ipconfig /renew" and press ENTER.

10) If you have a Static 192.168.x.x IP address on your machine, make sure your static DNS server settings are set to your router's IP (192.68.1.1) so that it will get the new DNS server addresses.

Hope that works for you, it did for me (or at least it appears to as I'm now connected thru the router and typing this!)

It looks like the AT&T have put a crude speed governor in place. When I start a download, it starts off at the highest download speed (e.g. 300 KB/Sec) allowed by the download server but is immediately choked. The result is that the download starts then from the lowest speed possible and builds up to the max allowed which is about 110 KB/Sec to 150 KB/Sec. The other problem is that ever half a second or so it rechecks the speed which stops the download. Nothing like the smooth downloads that used to have with @home that built up to the highest speed possible with the download server.

Damn.

My link? Works for me, maybe it's just for ATT customers. Here's the good stuff:

<<
TCP/IP:
Make sure DHCP is turned on. DHCP allows your computer to automatically request network settings from the network. With this setting enabled, there is no need to directly set any other TCP/IP settings.

E-Mail:
POP3 (Incoming Mail) Server: mail.attbi.com
SMTP (Outgoing Mail) Server: mail.attbi.com
Your E-Mail ID: You still have your old e-mail ID, but the domain (the part after the "@" sign) has changed; you must change the domain to "attbi.com." If your e-mail address was "buddy@home.com," you should change it to "buddy@attbi.com."

Web Browser:
Home Page: http://www.attbi.com/
(You may, of course, choose any home page; for the latest information provided by us at AT&T Broadband Internet, we recommend the above.)
Proxy Server, and Proxy Automatic Configuration: None should be set.

UseNet Newsgroups:
NNTP (UseNet) Server: netnews.attbi.com

Its back up here, (Chicago, Rogers Park) Still haven't tried it yet, going to go for it now.

But this sucks, why the 1.5 mb limit? I'm used to 4-5 mb down.

I'm in Chicago, and it came back up this AM...We did not get a phone call notifying us that it was up .. just noticed the modem lights.

I'm having inconsistent results with my network. I had to reconfigure each of the clients. Having done that, a lot of web sites viewed on the clients need to be refreshed to load properly. Any thoughts on this from anyone? I use a linksys 8 port switch.

Maybe I was too quick to report that its back. When I first looked, I saw 4 green lights (good). Then when I went to move my cable modem I unplugged it, when I plugged it back in, it took a while, and the top three lights came on full, but the fourth light (Online) is flashing. I don't know what this means, and I haven't tried to mess around with getting it to work yet, but I'm guessing its still offline here.

Does anyone have any more info about the new service? How are the newsgroups on netnews.attbi.com? I'm really hoping they are at least as good as the old @Home group. If they have crappy newsgroups, and a new download cap, then I don't even see a point in keeping their service...

Just my 2 cents...

If you get an IP, maybe it's your DNS. Could be a lot, but DNS you can fix.. try going to 64.28.67.150. That's Slashdot, if you DNS is out but net connections works you'll be able to use site via IP. Then if it's it you can plug in your own DNS server manually.

Well, I have an update for those folks in the Seattle/Bellevue area. I followed the directions posted by Valkryie. These are the same steps I took on Sunday and this had no effect on the problem. you must follow those steps though as they are the proper procedures.

However, tonight, while on endless hold once again, I came up with something new. I was able to access only 5% or less of the websites I attempted. They were all well known big sites. This was so obviously a DNS issue.

I went into Windows 2000 TCP/IP Advanced Settings - DNS tab and at the bottom of the window where it says "DNS suffix for this connection" I typed in: attbi.com

clicked OK to close all windows and slowly but surely, the DNS functions woke up. Within 10-20 minutes I was able to access any site without errors and FINALLY get my attbi email accounts.

Now, on to the router!

good luck to all,

OperaGhost

Unfortunatly it's not a DNS problem, and it's a widespread issue. Friends of mine in Seattle and Chicago, and myself in Portland, are all having the same issue. Our modems are all connected, we get a DHCP lease complete with IP, subnet, gateway and DNS, but we can't ping anything but the DNS servers, not even the gateway. Traceroutes to anything but the DNS server timeout on all hops. Traces to DNS timeout on every hop until it hits the DNS server, at which point it is able to resolve the IP into a domain and ping it.

Each of us has tried calling tech support, and all were told they had no idea what was going on. We're pretty much resolved to just wait it out

Ok chicago user here .

I dont know when and how iam going to get his back up and running . I had used windows 2000 adv server to setup my network to rout my traffic to my private lan .

Then i have any another windows 2000 server with ADS installed for hosting a web page . So i would need a static ip.

Has anyone tried after getting a static ip to put that in the tcp/ip settings ? Would it work ? Please let me know i need to know this stuff

My transition from @home to attbi only required changing my e-mail from xxxx@home to xxxx@attbi. The 1.5 mbs optimization? WTF!.
My previous version of IE6 under XP Home Edition has not been altered. Pittsburgh Pa.

This extra step though did fix my problem. I had the same problems. Got an IP from DHCP but pinging and tracert all timed out. This fixed that and it is running fine now.
