Been wondering the same. People spending $30k for a small crossover make me shake my head.

Personally i'm single with no kids or plans to have kids. Already own my own place and have a decent income. I already contribute a lot to retirement, and have extra. I use my car a lot for work driving to clients and such so I spend a good amount of time in it (15kmiles/yr) so it's worth it to me to have a nice vehicle. If I had a wife and kids, i'd be buying used.

Station car (train station is less than 10 minutes away) and daily driver: 2002 Toyota Camry LE with the 2.4 and 5spd manual. Has about 94K on the clock. Bought it 10 years ago. Will probably give it to my son in 5 years. He'll probably give it to his brother a few years later. His brother will probably give it to his cousin. His cousin will pass it on his grandson.

Every once in awhile I do a little window shopping. I have no need or desire to shell out for a new car so I tend to check the used car market. I'm all over the map.
I'm a manual snob so no automatics for me. Family\Wife vehicle will be auto\electric and don't care. I also purchase cars assuming that I'll hold on to them for at least a decade so quality\durability\ease of repair is a factor. BMW\AUDI\VW and Mercs are out the window.
From my most recent search
Caddy ATS turbo until I saw they are notorious for piston issues.
Mustang 5.0's? Glass trannies
Pontac GTO's? Gettin rattly nowadays.
Chevy SS's - "I know what I got" pricing
Miata's? Decisions, Decisions. Old project car or newer car with actual conveniences such as bluetooth and an interior with actual sound deadening.
Infintiy G37's - Nissan quality over the long term (shudder) vs what the car really is
Camaro? - Visibility comparable to that of a tank driver. I'd need a sunroof so that I could have someone could stand up out of it and act as a spotter. Also same issue as a Miata in that no room for humans in the back seat.
Challenger SRT? I can feel the headliner falling on to my head just thinking about it.
Honda Accord V6 Coupe - These will probably have disappeared by the time I start shopping. Probably the only car in the group that would fly under the wife's radar.
IS250? I'd at least take a look

I don't own a car that's roadworthy. I drive an 05 dakota for work, and don't hold title to it. When it goes to the junkyard, I'll be looking at some kind of used mid sized 4x4.

Inevitably though, since we recently had a kid and plan to have 1 or 2 additional I'm likely going to need an SUV.
If you need an additional, bigger, vehicle, get a minivan, not an SUV. I've had 2 of those and a station wagon old style Honda Odyssey, they are very useful.

2000 Insight.

No plan for a new car, unless they make this. Hell, I'll take the prototype as-is.

I have a 2008 Sublandru Forester. Its got just a plain low powered naturally aspirated engine and a boring 4 speed auto.
Its only got 130K miles on it, so, should be reliable for the forseeable future.

Next car is a big unknown. Office might be moving closer to downtown area, so, I may need to move to a house closer to a train station. If that happens, I more or less no longer need a DD, so, I can buy an unreliable low price, but expensive to maintain used Merc.

If I don't need to move, then Likely a used hybrid. GS450H and Q50 are looking like best options.
Wife has a Ford Edge, so, if we get buckets of snow, I can always take her AWD car to office. I dont need to have 2x AWD cars any more.

Just traded in our 2009 Mercedes ML350 SUV for a 2016 BMW X6 M series for my wife about 2 weeks ago. Little less room, so much faster. Its faster than my Maserati at stock. And overall nicer inside than her old ride, its almost too much. This car does literally everything. EXCEPT, no auto dimming headlights? Wtf is this crap. Big 20" rims, nice V8 sound, sport mode is very aggressive, and sport+ mode even more so. Little hard to take off smoothly to be honest. Almost always jerks a little no matter how slow I try to take off. Can kill the engine when stopped in comfort or eco mode, which is nice too. Sound system is amazing. My first BMW, overall pretty impressed. Bought both warranties, the service one that covers oil changes, brakes, belts, etc. And then the actual warranty that overs the transmission, engine, and other parts. Literally everything is covered except the tires. Insurance went up a good amount though, ugh.

We have 2x CX-5. It is amazing what this offers for $25K a pop.

Next is EV of sort. Tesla model 3 or Y.

2017 F-Pace S which will be gone by the end of 2019. In it's place I'm unsure but am slightly leaning towards a Volvo XC90 or a Porsche Macan GTS at the moment. If I switched things up and got a car and my wife got the SUV then I would be looking at an Audi S4/S5 or a Merc C43.

I don't think you need a next. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you for many years

Current car is 2013 BMW 135IS. My target for next car is a older BMW wagon as a hauler/winter beater. I also just watched Wheeler Dealers restore a Volvo 850 T5-R Wagon last night, so that might be the target instead.

EDIT scratch the 850, apparently they are really really rare and too old for me anyway.

I'll most likely replace my lightly used C7 Z06 with a lightly used C8 Z06.

2005 Chevy Malibu @109,000 miles: Replace in a couple years or so with a two-three year old Gen 2.0/2.5 Chevy Volt (and I hate GM now, but the volt is awesome)
2012 Ford F-150 @39,000 miles: Replace in four to five years with an F-350 Diesel.
2017 Can Am Spyder F3-S @ 11,000 miles: No timeline. Will likely keep for touring and buy another two wheeler for about town shit.
1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ @ 123,000 miles: Rock Crawler still road legal... Too much into it to ever replace it.
2015 Dutchman Aerolite camper: Keep it until F-350 enters the picture.

Current: 2000 Honda Insight, nearing 250k miles

Next: Next month I'm replacing the engine with a <40k Acura TSX engine, and a custom 6 speed gear box. That makes it a new car, right?

200+HP in a <1700lb vehicle.

Couple e46 BMWs ... 2004 330xi with 105k and 2005 M3 with 40k, both 6 speed manual.

The M3 is my “keep forever” car, value has nearly doubled since I bought it ($25k and had multiple serious offers for $44-45 this past summer). The 330xi is rusting away and I’m making the decision in two years to either address it all or junk it/sell for cheap and buy whatever nice long range electric that’s available and hopefully isn’t a Tesla. Depends on the time horizon for the right electric at that point and how long I think the car will last.
