My wife has a thigh gap but I don't think it is needed in women. I like strong looking thighs personally.

"Pig", "hefty" and "too fat" were some of the ways in which commenters described the 24-year-old. Her crime? Her thighs were touching. Lawley had failed to achieve a "thigh gap".
The model, who has her own swimwear line and has won numerous awards for her work, responded vehemently below the line: "You sit behind a computer screen objectifying my body, judging it and insulting it, without even knowing it."
She also went on to pen a thoughtful rallying cry for the Daily Beast last week against those who attacked her, saying their words were "just another tool of manipulation that other people are trying to use to keep me from loving my body".

A quick online search brings up page after page of thigh gap inspiration photos and supporters. Experts say the images alone can lead to self-destructive behavior, especially since the thigh gap is, for most girls, an unrealistic standard of beauty.
Greenberg said teens who were pursuing a thigh gap were “setting themselves up for not only an unattainable goal but for an unsustainable goal.
“Even if they reach it, it’s going to be very hard for them to maintain it,” she said.

My opinion is that this is a misuse of the word "controversy".
OP, you should note that the facebook group using her photo for negativity was a "thinspiration" group....basically, chicks who think its cool to be insanely thin and will adopt either bulimia or anorexia as a means to achieve this goal. This "Thigh Gap" they are talking about looks unhealthy...especially one the girls who frequent these groups.
For example, the blog skinnygossip.com came under fire when it was using photos of Kate Upton to spread negativity about not being as thin as possible. This blog also gives "health" tips....like eating baby food to ensure you are always eating low-carb, low calorie, "healthy" food (for adults) that will keep you thin.
It's disgusting.
