heh, I think you should have tried to take it from a different angle, the whole shoreline in the background is a bit distracting IMO. Good work on the photoshop though.. you have far more patience than I

Good Photoshop work! On the shot, though, my preference would be to see it shot from a lower angle, so the primary group of cattails clears the shoreline. For the direction that you seem to be going, however, I'd go with cropping a small bit from the right and keeping all of the cattails.

the original photo looks better when compared to the photoshopped one because the latter looks "fake" to me. I'm not sure what it is, but it just doesn't look real.

In my opinion you should have tried another angle where the trees were not in the shot, or shot at a lower f/stop and longer focal range for less depth of field. It would have been much less work, and probably more effective then 3hrs of photoshop. However, now that you put in those 3hrs, I am sure that knowledge and experience will come in handy for future projects. Keep shooting.

thanks everyone

regarding the shot, i took it at f/3.5, which was my lens' max aperture.
i could have switched to a prime, but it would have been 50mm instead of 18mm.

i was down as low as i was willing, the ground was completely covered in goose poo

as far as the altered one looking fake, i have cleanup yet to do, or it could be the blue sky.
or maybe that you saw the original first

I probably won't have any more time for it today

It's the unnatural transition from plant to sky where you removed the trees. The plants that remain should be lighter, have highlights at the top, and appear to have some irregularity to them. For reference, see the plants to the left of the cattails, where there were no trees to begin with.

That stuff got taken care of in the final clean up!
THanks though!

Hard to detect any editing in the final job. Nicely done, however I like the trees in the background, they provide a feeling of scale and distance as well as aiding your composition.

Very nice job. One of the trees you took out on the right is still casting a pretty dark shadow on one of the shorter shrub like trees that's remaining. It looks like a stripe for no reason, but in the context of a tree next to it, it would look perfectly normal.

If you didnt know that the trees were originally there, would you think that the darker parts are shadows or jut darker bushes? IMO, it's a pretty good job, but the only thing that gives away that its a photoshoped pic is that the water still has the reflections from the tress.

you could still see the reflection of the tree on the water...but it's still good.

The horizon on the right side with the removed trees looks too smooth to me. Nice though. Maybe you should clone the water all the way to the horizon and get rid of all the land like a poster above me said.

And perhaps, add a sunset behind the cattails to give it a more scenic look.
