I want EVERYONE to use the same settings if you post your FPS here. Also I dont want stuff like sound card effecting the results. So I recommend you use this line to start up Q3.

"C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set cd_nocd 1 +set s_initsound 0

Go into system and choose high quality, then change the resolution to 1024x768. If you dont do these things DONT POST YOUR NUMBERS HERE!

I get 90FPS in Win2K

Asus A7V
192MB PC133 3-2-2
T-bird 900@ 1035
Creative Annihilator Pro (GeForce DDR)@ 145core 366mem

I get 79.1 @ those specs.

Mind if I ask for some 1280x1024 benchmarks too? I get 54.5fps at that resolution.

Btw, 90fps? Very nice. Especially considering that AnandTech got 71.1fps on a similar machine.

Tweaking baby I got 70 without tweaks. Then I flashed my BIOS to NVidia reference... Using Win2K gave me an extra 2FPS... Im running the card at 145 core 366 memory in Q3 STABLE. MEmory can hit 375 but core craps out over 147. And I use 6.47 drivers.

Hummm weird at 1024x768 I beat you by about 15% but at 1280 I only get 50 which is lower than you. But I guess anything could account for that. Memory speed/amount... AGP 4X? I have to run 2X. At that res it may make a difference... at 1024x768 AGP4X and 2X perform the same.

Dulanic,

That method you mentioned... is the way I have *ALWAYS* benched Q3A. BTW you didn't mention which demo to run. demo002 is faster than demo001. Also I believe if I wanted to, I could record my own demo where I could have my character sit still in an unoccipied arena, facing the wall, and probably get 100fps+ on a sub-500 mhz TNT system. Just to let you know how important FULL disclosure is.

(Although I'm pretty sure that using demo demo001 is the generally accepted "norm" and unspoken rule here)

I get 67.2.

Asus P3V4X
256mb CAS3 PC133
P3-600E @ 803mhz
Asus 6800 Dlx @ default clock (POS wont o.c)
Windows 2000 SP1 / nVidia 6.31 drivers
AGP 4x + sba enabled / FW disabled

BTW another point... I'm sure there are setting in the openGL control panel that people can tweak to "cheat" on this little exercise. FYI my settings are:

Use Fast linear mipmap linear filtering (checked)
Everything else (NOT checked)

Use desktop color dept
Auto-select
Always Off
No AA
Use up to 1MB

specs you listed:

81.2 fps

asus a7v
tbird1000 at 1000
detonator 6.31 drivers
asus geforce2 32mb pure at default settings
128mb pc133 3-3-3
win2k straight off the cd
quake3 straight off the cd

this is my standard, non-overclocked mode, and i'll update once i reboot and run in overclocked mode. in the meantime, do you think that changing the agp aperture size to more than 64mb would make a difference? do you think that installing the latest quake3 patch would make a difference?

dangit! I have the same video card as poster GEFORCE DDR. But its not overclocked and i ONLY GET 70FPS!!!

Does overclocking the videocard that high really gain that much fps?

Changing the aperture to more than 64mb may help when benchmarking or playing in a very large level or a more graphically intensive version of Q3A such as a mod or Star Trek Elite Force. For basic Q3A timedemo demo001 it won't make a difference.

You should patch your Q3A to 1.17 just so your results are comparable with ours, more than anything else really.

how am I supposed to figure out how many FPS I get?

I added the parameter Dulanic told us. I selected high quality and 1280x768. Then I pressed '~' and typed /demo demo001

Is this the correct way to do it? where am I supposed to see fps???

/cg_drawfps 1 <-this will show your real time fps

after the demo go back to the console (~) and look at your fps

I went back to the console and it didn't show the fps anywhere.

/cg_drawfps 1 didn't do anything.

Is it because I have an older version of Q3A?

I'm not even going to try benchmarking at the high of a resolution. If you'll notice my Sig, then you will see that my video card will poop out on me at anything higher then 640x480.

okok i think i know why

u didnt do this at the beginning
/timedemo 1 <-this enable a timed demo

so basically as a whole this is what you do
load "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set cd_nocd 1 +set s_initsound
go to console (~)
/cg_drawfps 1 <-this enables the real time fps counter
/timedemo 1 <- this enable a timed demo
press DEMO and press demo001 on the screen with your mouse <- this starts the demo
wait til the thing finishes
go to console (~) again
the FPS should be at the end of those lines

Big difference isnt it? My memory is 6NS which is 166Mhz 333DDR... but my card came as 300. So I ALWAYS have it at 333 but at 366 when playing games. My core runs fine at 145.... however I did add a Vice Extreme III. Before that it would only do 137. Also you may want to watch yours.... at 145 with stock cooling it is likely if you look hard you will see white pixels showing up all over. The main thing to OC is the memory thats most important.

Yes I was talking demo001 as you said its kind of a unspoken rule. And yes to get the FPS type /timedemo 1 in the counsle and after its done it will say your FPS in the counsle.

Damn, my ASUS 6800 is like a dud or something. It can't o/c worth $h!t. And I think the fan is going to die on me soon. Makes all these funny noises and RPM jumps up and down 3000rpm at a time (!). Maybe that'll be a good thing, if the fan dies, I can run it underclocked while waiting for my Tennmax BGA cooler.

Actually, the V5 doesn't even run at 2x AGP. Hell, I'm sure somebody else can clarify this but I believe it takes NO advantage of the AGP at all.
