...

Idealy I want to skip the whole old age home thing and die suddenly from some really epic or hilarious accident and not be a burden on anyone. Or maybe some kind of heroic act where I die saving someone.

No idea. I'll admit I've not thought that far ahead.

I just don't think I'd do a great job as a husband, and be totally lousy as a dad. Both are reasons I've always been single and unless something earth shattering happens I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I just hope it's a nice blonde nurse that has to wipe my tushy.

Thing is I bet I drop from a heart attack or get cancer. That's the way that shit works.

I have a child and have no plans for him to take care of either of us.

That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Yeah, the last thing I want my kids doing is looking after me at the end of my life rather than getting on with their own.

Stick me in a nursing home and smuggle me in a bottle of rum a week.

Not sure about the UK. But I know you are not prevented from drinking alcohol at a nursing home here. Unless of course your doctor/nurse says you can't. But there really isn't too many old people that drink. LOL

neat.. elderly communities.
you can shift from independent living to assisted living to finally, nursing home/hospice care.

but how much do they cost?

They cost a lot. Usually a pretty big "entrance fee" then a few grand a month. But the quality is pretty high. I have a friend (now a widow) who lives in one. They get one meal a day in the central restaurant, but the restaurant has a menu, waiters (high school kids) and white tablecloths. The facility has a woodshop for residents that is as big as a 4-car garage. 24x7 security at the entrance gate. She told me it's best to get in while you are still independent as the entrance fee is lower. The place is huge and seems to be at capacity, so it can't be only affordable for millionaires.

But for elderly people without kids, they don't need to leave an estate - they can spend the money on high-quality care in their twilight years.

Personally I'd like to go out on my own terms. Don't want to live into my 80-90s if my quality of life is terrible.

We're planning to save for a decent retirement so our costs should be covered should we need care. Unexpected medical expenses after retirement is my biggest concern. After retirement we'll probably move closer to family so we at least have some support should be need it.

Good question Fuzzy. I dont really have an answer for you because it is also something ive been pondering recently. Hopefully ill gain some knowledge from this thread. I am married, but we arent having any kids so its a situation that would affect us someday as well.

Not a plan as such, but I hope to have amassed enough savings to cover whatever expenses are required for me to live how I want to live.

hope u got a lot saved.
a good private nursing home is $10k/month!

you do not want to be in a free Medicaid paid nursing home

What makes you say that?

Loads of my elderly patients drink and a high proportion would be classed as having a drink problem if they were younger.

People cut little old Doris some slack for hitting the sherry.

The trick is to be self-pay initially and choose a good one, then when funds run out they have to keep you when Medicaid takes over payment.

Being the entrepreneur I am, I just had a great idea for the ultimate in end of days care. The USS Floating Assisted Living Center! That's right. A cruise ship with elderly care for the low, low rate of 20 grand a month.

wha?!
why does the $10k/month nursing home have to keep you when bills switch to $500/month Medicaid????????

Well I am terminally ill, stage IV lung cancer. I hope to continue getting help from my husband & a limited amount of help from my adult son who is also autistic. Both of my daughters are married with small kids so I don't expect much help from them.

My plan? Early palliative care, ( managing tx side effects & pain needs to start early) possible in hospital hospice & terminal sedation if my pain becomes unmanageable. I am not into pain & not into seeing my family suffer

The idea of having kids so they can take care of you in later years is dumb to me.
Me and the wife will probably not have kids and we should have plenty of money to have helps when we're old.
Our idea is to live in a low cost country(i.e. our home country) once we're older and live it up.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but if I decide to check myself out, I'm not going to use a gun. I don't want to add to the statistics that the anti-gun people use to show how evil guns are.
