I think I'm addicted to being connected. I've actually tried to wean myself off it lately.

All day I check my email often. I have my phone on my desk so I can reach it easily. I check Tinder multiple times per day. I'm on a local dating site, and I check that often, too. I think its actually making me anxious, so I'm trying to stop it.

I'm not really an anxious person luckily, but it causes a higher level of anxiety than I want in my life.

I've broken the pins of an AMD Athlon II X4 620 by installing it wrong. Had to replace it.

Had a Gigabyte mobo that would go into an endless boot loop. Was gonna return it, so I pulled out my 2500k and went to install the socket plate cover... my fingernail nicked a few of the pins. Ugh.

I straightened them out to the best of my ability and went back to my MC. They didn't even look at the socket when processing the return.

i have not backed up my data with 2 TB in laptop since 5 years...

I just now started to take advantage of backup software (Windows 8 system image backup as well as File History, backed up to a networked drive). I have never made a image backup of any PC I have worked with before that point (following in the school of format and reinstall for anything catastrophic if a system restore rollback does not work).

Once upon a time, I got a PSU swapped in my computer.
This was before I built my first machine from scratch, so I brought the machine in, and took it back.
The first night with the new PSU, as usual, I was going to switch the computer off at the PSU. The old one had a nice switch, the new one had a stranger design.
I flip the switch, the lights go out, and sparks come out of the PSU.
Oops. I may just have switched it into 110V mode.
After unplugging the machine, putting the breaker back in, switching back to 230, the PSU stayed dead, and I brought the machine back the next day with an accurate description of events, which got me another replacement PSU under warranty. Luckily i fried nothing else.

Another electrical mishap, was when I plugged the front audio connector on the IEEE1394 onboard connector - and then panicked when the machine would not start... No losses this time around.

This is only beaten by my sister, who had my father's help building her first machine from scratch, and promptly installed the mainboard without spacers in the case. Again, no losses, but fun trouble shooting via the phone and figuring out why the new hardware won't turn on...

Having been considered a "techie"/geek/nerd all my life (and still by most people who know me), I still can't hold a candle to many of the people here lol.

And even being that, I absolutely hate/scared of some trends in tech and am a late adopter on things such things as cell phones, smart phones, tablets, social media (still really don't use them), online bill pay, and things that get way too commercialized and controlled, and things that put way too much of my info out there. I'm over trying tech just because it's new and hip. If I can't justify an actual use for it, I won't buy it. To this day my family/friends don't understand why I'm not on facebook, or why I was the last in my circle to have a cell phone. People who stare at their phones the whole time instead of interacting with the people who are around you annoy me. A trend that has only gotten worse over the years.

I once was trying to work on my air conditioning unit and I went to take a voltage measurement outside on the condenser and crossed the 220 and knocked out the power to half my block and blew myself across the yard (melting the leads on the multimeter). Somehow I didn't get hurt.

I once sent a poorly functioning coffee maker to our ITS department through inter office mail. It had a note on it that read "This is broken. Please fix." - just to see what would happen.

On the topic of confessions of ineptitude - used windows98 with a 160gb hard drive and didn't figure out till years later why it kept getting corrupted.

Let me guess...they sent it back with a note saying they don't support java?

I used to sleep in my server room when I was tired and would lock myself into the room with a certain producer....

I had a test kitchen that I was responsible for when I worked in the quaker tower in chicago and I used to go in there on weekends/nights and make crazy meals and bring over girlfriends for romantic dinners overlooking the city.

I picked up a working used cassette tape robot that would auto play up to twelve cassettes consecutively. It would play fine but I could never figure out how to get the sound out of it and into my stereo. It used a weird five pin connector. I guess if I had had a multimeter I could have figured it out.

Yeah, that was it. We didn't have an internet back then. Too bad too as it looks like a couple dollar part would have gotten me hooked up.

we had libraries and schools. Dont give up! Do you know how many hours of mixtapes you could have played in the basement while playing pool?

If I had one of those back then I would have gone nuts!

I bought a Macbook Pro last year just to see what all the fuss is about. I really like the touch pad, but other than that, I'm not a fan. I'm really looking forward to picking up a Windows laptop this year.

I remember those! Big-ass plug. As the article says, it was the keyboard connector for my first IBM 'puter. I also remember them on real old style, low end (mono) cassette recorders as well.

As the noted novelist and stealth A/V enthusiast E. M. Forster said, "Only connect!"

Those three words should never, ever go together like that on a technology forum.

What I find kind of funny is that now we can set up playlists with 10s of thousands of songs and we're like, "Yeah, whatever".
