So if humanity was going to go extinct, and the only way to save it was to clone more humans, you would say no?

Billy and the Clone-a-saurus?

I say for zoo purposes, sure. To reintroduce them to the wild? I think if they went extinct once, it'd just happen again. Seems creepy to continually clone a species just to keep it in existence.

I couldn't care less about Natural Selection. Seriously, it's not a Philosophical Position, it's just a Process. It's not even a Process deeming Worthiness, things that have gone extinct only did so for Temporary Conditions, in many cases. So many extinct Animals/Plants probably would flourish under current Conditions, they just couldn't under the Conditions at the time around their Extinction. That's assuming releasing them into the Wild. If they are going to be put into Zoos or other controlled facilities, then there's no reason why any extinct thing couldn't flourish. Of course, given the Jurassic Park scenario, you gotta decide with a little wisdom with some things.

I think there are many good Scientific reasons to bring them back as well. It certainly would increase our Knowledge of DNA, but also many Pre-historic Pants/Animals had unique characteristics that could expand our understanding in many fields.

It would probably cost a lot to maintain species that have gone extinct before. Some of them might be economically viable as food sources or game.

Or maybe just kill off all the animals and revive a specimen or three whenever we need 'em.

Like, I want to go horseback riding. Bam! Revive a horsie to ride.

I want a steak. Bam! Revive a cow. OM NOM NOM. Ooops, it's extinct again.

No. If they die for whatever reason, let them stay dead. If they can't cope with the change in environment or threats, then that's too bad. Most of them died due to changes in nature well before humans came into the picture. Playing God will only lead to bad things.

well sorta, we can make most anything we want go extinct given enough motivation. so we might as well bring things back as well, thats our power. we are nature.

agreed. if we gain the ability to revive them, to do so would be natural.

Increased diversity in the genetic pool.

Extended/broadened hunting seasons.

Tasty meat.

So is the dinosaurs extinction considered natural selection?

Ahh yes it is, guess they just couldn't adapt to the sunless conditions. Interesting.

Are you implying that humans or aliens caused those sunless conditions?

But how do we know which ones are tasty?

(except for the dodo, of course. the historical info is pretty solid in terms of its tastiness)

We'll never know until we grow em kill em and eat em. All the more reason to do it. I wouldn't mind trying a nice supper of T Rex prime rib, even just once. Just for the satisfaction of patting myself on the back for being at the top of the food chain once more.

I don't get how humans could interfere with natural selection in any way. Aren't we subject to it ourselves no matter what we do?

That said, I think extinct animals should stay that way. Reintroducing them could be potentially bad for us, though it would be very cool to see animals like the dodo or eventually, maybe, dinosaurs.
