Your Top 5 16-bit RPGs NOT called Final Fantasy (or Chrono Trigger)

I saw this as a YouTube video awhile back, thought it would make a good idea for a thread.

Being a nostalgic old gamer with fond memories of classic old RPGs, I thought it would be interesting hearing everyone's top 5 RPGs, excluding the FF series and Chrono Trigger.

Doesn't matter the platform, just as long as it's from a 16-bit console.

What would your Top 5 be?

(feel free to make it a Top 10 if you feel the need )

Secret of Mana, Phantasy Star IV, Ys (though I can't remember which one). I didn't get much in the way of RPGs in during the 16 bit era; most I actually came back and played later on via emulation or remakes.

There was also this space RPGish (kinda like Space Rangers) game on the Genesis where you and your crew had stats, you could develop your ship, hire/fire/lose crew, mine planets in a rover with dyanmic weather systems, and a bunch of other things. I can't remember if it even had a storyline or not. I rented the game, it didn't have a manual, and was complex to me at the time, but I had a bunch of fun. Of course, I've been looking for it for ages and can't remember the name to save my life.

Mario RPG
Shining Force 2

I can't think of too many more that are 16-bit. I enjoyed Secret of Mana/Evermore, but I wouldn't put them in my top 5.

I always loved Secret of Evermore. Also, Shadowrun for Genesis. I played both several times.

Well everyone already mentioned my favorites so....

I'll mention Arcana, which was a wierd "card-themed" 1st person old school d&d RPG for the SNES. It was pretty difficult, which I liked. Pretty fun.

Also, YS3 was good, albeit very short.

I'll mention Breath of Fire II again as well though, right up there with FFVI IMO.....

Lagoon was terrible....

Yes, someone finally mentions Illusion of Gaia!

Great game. Some of the best music of any RPG of the era. Bright visuals, fun, original story, and likable cast. Always one of my very favorites.

I played one that I loved, but I can't remember the name.

This might be a bit sketchy:

You started as a kid who's family got killed, and you were taken in by an old man. He started you on the path to become a ninja. The first part of the game was standard JRPG - exploring, gaining levels, creature encounters.

When you got to a certain point (after a long haul) the game turned into a wargame. You could command armies to take over territory.

At the final stage you were a ruler and controlled cities and multiple armies.
