in no particular order:

1) Matrix (first one only)

2) Fight club

3) V for Vendetta

4) American beauty

5) Haven't decided yet

I also would like to say that how I judge a movie is if it has replay value. 99% of movies I watch do not fit that criteria. These four I have mentioned are excellent movies and are timeless IMO.

Yours?

1) Shawshank Redemption
2) Amelie
3) Casablanca
4) Goodfellas
Tie 5) Pulp Fiction
Tie 5) Glory

As much as I liked Matrix, Fight Club, and V for Vendetta... I would not even consider them anywhere near my top movies of all time.

I have too many favorites to pick five, but here are a few:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Miller's Crossing
Road to Perdition
Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List
The Untouchables
Once Upon a Time in America

Those two movies are excellent.

These were all good choices and are in my top 50

Matrix (first one only)
Fight club
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure <-- I'd pick Bogus Journey
Tampopo
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Miller's Crossing
Amelie
Pulp Fiction
Star Wars IV

I'll cheat and pick some actor & director/creator collections, like this:

- Groundhog Day and other Bill Murray classics (Life Aquatic, Lost in Translation, ...)
- Nightmare Before Christmas* and the rest of Tim Burton's work
- Miyazaki's anime
- John Carpenter's older work (Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little CHina, In the Mouth of Madness, ...)
- Clint Eastwood's westerns

(honorable mention)
- John Woo's Hong Kong films
- Ahnold's action films
- Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy
- Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire & Far Away So Close

(* With apologies to Harry Selick, he did nice work directing but it was still a Tim Burton movie.)

The Good The Bad and The Ugly (If you're gonna shoot...shoot! Don't talk!)
Blade Runner (All those moments in time will be lost...like tears in rain. Time to die)
Savings Private Ryan (movie starts off with a bang)
Empire Strikes Back (Noooooooooooo...)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.)

I agree with your list, with the exception of Schindlers List. When I saw it I didn't really find it all that funny. I think I only laughed two or three times, that's it.
