Hold on there Bubba, if he thinks "The Gun" is the shiz then that's his opinion, who am I to question his sexuality about it.

I'm waiting for the person who insists they can't pick 5 and will list 15+ to show off their movie knowledge

I find it hard to believe that people who regularly watch films can honestly narrow it down to 5. I tried to list 5, but there was no possible way considering the amount of movies I've seen that I felt were head and shoulders above the majority of films out there. I can't narrow that group down to 5, 10, or a 100. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, their genres, time periods, length etc. Depending on a person's moods and the last movies they've seen they might pull towards cult classic films, comedies, straight-faced dramas, long epics, or whatever else.

Uh, that's sort of the point: to force you to analyze your favorite movies and pick the best of the best. That's like asking someone what they would do with a million dollars and they say "invest it". Misses the entire point of the question.

Maybe I'm far too forgiving on my 'favorites' I guess. Don't quite understand your point with that analogy though...If they're going to invest it you couldn't ask for a more concise answer. You're only defending my point with that analogy really..ask that same person that same question once a month and you'll likely get slightly varied answers each time, if not completely different answers, much like a lot of 'all time' lists change from season to season. More power to all of you if you can confidently make a list like this. I guess I prefer to cop out, and say 'They're all good in different ways!'

And to add something more useful: This past summer I tried to do a top 10 movie list, and I got three of them down before I gave up after racking my brain for what seemed like an eternity:

Clyde Bruckman -- The General (1927)
Billy Wilder -- Sunset Blvd. (1950)
Luis Buñuel -- Viridiana (1961)

There are definitely some interesting lists on here.

I have enjoy'd these many times throughout my life and they have not diminished in my estimation. Unlike some flick I may have liked only as a child and then realized how crap it was (or at least cliche or even well made to appeal to a certain demographic).

Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The
Lawrence of Arabia
Apocalypse Now
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb
Bridge Too Far, A
Man Who Would Be King, The

That's right: six, because it was difficult enough to narrow down. Countless beloved films had to get the chop. Besides, the OP only listed four so I figgered I'd make use of the extra one

Wow, to this day I don't understand the appeal of the movie Memento. While a lot of you guys have it highly rated on your Top 5, for me it's one of my worst five.

Then again, it's probably one of those love or hate movies. Personally, I couldn't stand seeing the same thing over and over again. It's a miracle I even made it through that movie.
