If I thought about it, this list would be different. But just popping it out of my head it would be:

1. Doom
2. Half Life
3. Freespace 2
4. Wing Commander 2 or 3 (I know thats 2, cant decide).
5. Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries

I thought this up in 2 minutes. If I spent anymore time I would have a brain meltdown. Diablo would be up there with number 2 or 3. Warcraft 2 as well. Oh and probably Baldurs Gate. Uh and system shock 2. That conan game, and oregon trail... Team Fortres........ see, these lists stress me out lol.

But DooM is #1 for sure. Ill never forget going into sears and playing doom on one of the display computers. The grotesquely overweight manager would come out and say things like "This aint no arcade boy, get out of here". To which I would reply "Why, grotesquely overweight manager guy, why on earth would you have a computer setting out in the middle of the isle with doom loaded on it if not to attract the attention of curios customers seeking to test said program?" To which he would get angry and I would walk away, only to return and haunt him a couple days later.

I may have left the grotesquely overweight bit out, its been awhile.

These questions are difficult, but:

Tribes
Quake 2
Battlefield 1942
Age of Empires

Those are the four that got the most play from me, and they're the ones I derived the most enjoyment from for a considerable length of time. AOE absolutely owned me for many months.

I'll have to split between FPSes and other because it's too difficult for me to rank all of the games.

FPSes
(1) Return To Castle Wolfestein.
(2) Undying.
(3) Medal of Honour.
(4) Jedi Knight II.
(5) Unreal.

Other
(1) Starcraft.
(2) TIE Fighter.
(3) Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator II.
(4) X-Wing.
(5) Warcraft II.

I'm 20, but I didn't get a nice PC until 1998... a shiny new Dell Dimension XPS R400. 400Mhz Pentium 2, 64MB RAM, 8MB Permedia 2, 10GB hdd, Zip 100, Turtle Beach Montego A3D. R0XX)RING SYSTEM.

I guess I should consider myself lucky to start off so early. I'm 23 now but I started in '88.

My first box was an Intel 8086 2.4MHz 1MB, 10MB HD, and a monochrome monitor

LOL. My first pc was 8088 9.54mhz with hercules too

Best games ever:

The one and only MILLENIUM and DEUTEROS
Defender of the crown
North and South
Half Life
Unreal (I+II+Tournaments)

1. Deus Ex (by Leaps and Bounds!)
2. Doom2 (That game made me sh1t my pants)
3. Quake2 Custom Levels - Death Match (1st internet deathmatch game I played)
4. ALL the old "Gold Box" SSI AD&D games (That's all I played in the 386 days)
5. Diablo 1 & 2

I'm 40. I've bought and played "hundreds" of PC games. As good as graphics are these days, they still don't stack up like they used to.

What it is, the textures and graphics engines were very simple back in those days, so the programmers spent most of the time "writing a good game".
Now-a-days so much time is spent coding the graphics and effects engine and painting textures and making "levels", there's not much energy left in "writing a good game" is seems. Once in a while you get a "good one" at best, but that's about it.

I'm afraid that's what Doom3 is going to be. They've spend all these years perfecting the "graphics engine" and making it "pretty", I'm afraid the game itself will be not more than making your way "through another level" blasting everything in site.... until you get to the end and "kill the boss".

Maybe this time it will be John Carmack's head on a stick instead of John Romero's. (The Boss in Doom2 was actually John Romero's head on a pole).

*Sigh*......I hope one day they "get back to the basics"

Cheers.

Whitedog, I totally agree with you. I played a text based MUD for the longest time, and was thouroughly entertained. Ice Wind Dale barely kept my attention for over 5 hours, and Dungeon Siege only lasted about a week for me. I can't believe I forgot to put Deus Ex on my list

This thread is bringing me too much nostalgia of the golden age of Mucman's gaming days... let this thread die

1. Deus Ex - the game of all games
2. UFO Enemy Unknown - best EVER turn-based strategy!!!
3. Dune 2 - the granddaddy of all RTS'es
4. Sam & Max / Day of the Tentacle (could not decide, both were too good) - LucasArts at their finest
5. Jedi Knight Jedi Outcast / Outcast - awesome, well-rounded action games

Honourable mentions: X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Freespace I & II - great space sims

This list would be representative of how much time I spent playing these games. I completed Deux Ex, UFO and Dune 2 several times slightly changing my playing style each time. They were just that good. Almost any LucasArts adventure game would be suitable for 4th place but these two were the ones I remember most. I could not make up my mind about Jedi Outcast and Outcast (that voxel grahpics game that looked stunning at the time it was released). Outcast has slightly outdated graphics but a great story and an AMAZING soundtrack, while Jedi Outcast features excellent action and gorgeous graphics.
