1. COD:UO
With its first expansion of series, this game introduced the gametype "Base Assault" where each team had 3 bunkers which you had to destroy then plant a bomb and successfully blow the bunker up. You can defuse it as defenders. I played on 8 man leagues and won top place on a perfect streak. The game allowed for a console command that recorded your battles (/demo) which allowed you to view your entire round and see what went wrong and what went right. The game was awesome, the league playing the and 8 vs 8 torny was the shit. Our clan owned every Base Assault clan and retired when COD2 came out (which was highly disappointing)

2. BF2 / BF2: SF
I continue to play BF2: SF. With "No Vehicles" as the option, your shooter skills are really put to the test along with all your other ass kicking abilities you can use with tactical gear (graping hook, flashbangs, tear gas, zip line, etc, etc).

3. Diablo 2: LOD
When you can play a game and make money selling vitual items on ebay, you know its a good game LOL.

4. Dark Age of Camelot
Before its expansions, this was my very first MMORPG's. I played for years with my bad ass Sarcen female Sorc's. Sorc's in the game were rare because they died a lot but provided awesome crowd control support. Realm vs. Realm provided excellent PvP game style with the game and even PvE was bad ass to keep me going. The expansions were ok. I forget the first one, Sith(sp?) i forget, but I quit when New Frontiers was developed. It just wasn't the same battlefield anymore.

5. Eve Online / Final Fantasy Online
After DAoC, I beta'ed for Eve Online. The game was beautiful at the start. Very complicated at first and the learning curve was good. So much to do in this game but I took a break and played FFO for about a year. I was a White Mage healer and it was very cool until all the Asian players really got annoying and since they had a 1+ year head start, it got less attractive. I ended Eve Online at my peak, my stories can go on forever in this game and it ended with me getting a sough after BPO for Cap Recharge II. Thank god for 2nd accounts =p

I'm surprised, no one's saying WoW (I played the demo for an hour or two and got bored). Just seems so popular though.

They're all too busy playing WoW.

This game really makes every other MMO seem like Easy mode, as pretty much everything is a grind or incredibly difficult requiring grouping. Still, some of the best boss fights and a very complicated, if not overly rigid combat system. If you're accustomed to the instant-gratification of western MMOs like WoW, LOTRO and now AoC, this game will frustrate you to no end.

I LOVED FFXI. The problem was that you needed like three hours to get anything done. Once you were about 90 minutes in though and had a good rhythm with your group plus a good quest or hunting spot, few online experiences came close.

1. Operation Flashpoint (2001)
-Classic

2. Operation Flashpoint (Red Hammer)

-Classic

3. Operation Flashpoint (Resistance)
-Classic - The modding community was so loyal as to come out with dozens of new missions on a daily bases. The missions were vast in play types. All players could play other people's missions online with an in-game mission downloading system. Say I made a cool CTF, I could have it up and online being played in 2 minutes if I wanted. The game-types were user-generated, forget just CTF-DM-Coop, etc. But there was FPS RTS, Team Vs. Coop, even an MMO simulator mission made by a few people. The game never got boring, 5+ addons or so were released daily. The addons again were incorperated on the internet and played with dozens of people. I played in a server that used over 3,000 different units, ranging from tanks, guns, huge 300sq km islands, jets, boats, helicopters, player skins, cars, trucks, UAV's, you name it. The game felt so new every day, it was just so amazing.

4. Armed Assault
-Its better than brainless games.

5. Crysis
-Debatable, I like the larger maps mainly with Teamspeak users using tactics. Thats it. Otherwise, Project Reality BF2.

Hmmm, very tempted by Operation Flashpoint (Resistance), with such a seemingly great modding community (which I'm always seeking for a game especially on-line) it's probably a good buy. So far I've taken notes of six extra games which weren't part of my current collection thanks to your posts guys, and as a result I've bought World in Conflict yesterday, I've started off-line though, to get used to the controls mostly and to get familiar with units and counters.

1. Quake 1 (and mods)
2. Half-Life 1 (and mods)
3. Doom 2
4. Starcraft
5. Duke Nukem 3D

Alternatively

1. Ultima Online
2. Everquest
3. World of Warcraft
4. Realms of Despair
5. Lotro

Honorable mention goes to Subspace, while lacking the polish of a real title, it was an incredibly addictive multiplayer game.

1. UT2k4
2. UT3
3. Painkiller
4. Quake 4
5. HL2M

If i had gotten into gaming earlier, Quake 3 would be on that list.

I love very fast paced multiplayer fps titles.
So basically, other than UT3, there's been nothing new worth playing to me in a long time (which is why i still play UT2k4 more than anything else).

Bring on Quake 5 please!

not surprised that everyone has been listing fps's... Diablo being the only RPG...

Very Surprised no one listed Starcraft, Warcraft, or some of the other RTS's

1. Warcraft Three TFT: This game ruined gaming for me. It took so long to learn how to play at a high level that I feel like a complete newbie playing any other game.

2. Starcraft BW: First online game. Played the BGH maps and actually though I was good. Didnt realize I was wrong till W3

3. Diablo 2: This is the game I played during bad patches of W3

4. Starkingdoms: www.starkingdoms.com Text based, but fairly political and mathematically challenging.

5. Civilization games: All of them over various times with various friends. Just gotta love it. Keeps one occupied like nothing else!
