Do a search on the Microsoft Download site, or on google, for a file named Boot_vis.exe
It is a Microsoft utility geared towards optimizing your boot times. On systems where it normally takes more than 30 seconds, you notice the biggest gains. You won't be disappointed.

My boot time is 15 seconds from power up. P4 1.5 with 256 RDRAM. I didnt notice any gains from boot_vis. But on my P2 400 it shaved about 10-15 seconds off the boot time.

Using the Trace feature in BootVis, I was timed at 21.96 seconds without ZoneAlarm starting automatically, and 23.19 seconds with it. Great stuff!

Ok....that bootvis utility has got to be one of the cooler things that microsoft has put out. Anyway 16.55 seconds for me....much better than I thought.

It would help if you guys posted your computer speed, memory and if you have a network card or controller cards installed. Just so everyone can gauge their comparison to the right post.

I know some of you have it already in your Rig information, but if you wont take the time to post it some of us arent going to take the time to look at your Rig.

It takes me 60seconds from power on to my desktop with no hour glass.

I have a Network card for my local network and dsl.
Have a Ultra66 Promise controller
1.2ghz Celeron2
640mb memory

Well, it also depends on what ppl have that load into memory as well. I mean my daughters PC with 98se boots in about 8 seconds, but she does not have much on it.

Anyway, for my 50 second!! <<that really is way to long XP rig here are it's specs.

K7-T mobo
1.4gig T-Bird
768 MEGS cas-2 Rammage
1 Netgear nic card for DSL
2 WD HDD's
16X DVD
24X CDRW
Audigy Soundcard

What loads on startup is just Zonealarm

Bear in mind nothing in this setup has changed from when this rig ran 98se

Under 98se it booted in 40 seconds...so XP "boots 10 seconds SLOWER for me"

concerning all those with sub 20 second boot up times, are you guys timing the boot up the INSTANT you press the power button? No not when the bios screen's up, but the INSTANT you press that doggurn button.

To time, I just used BootVis to trace the next boot. So, it's not exactly a cold boot, but a restart.
If you happen to have an ADSL connection, that might be why you're having a 50 second boot. I only have ZoneAlarm starting up in the background, and that's it. To fix a 50 second boot, read my tip about the DSL connection:

i already ran bootvis before I posted
How can you guys have such a fast boot time?

The only thing that is wrong in my computer is the cpu (duron 750)
i have 512 sdram and an ibm 60gxp

so why is my boot time so pathetic?

I mean, it takes about 4 seconds just for my geforece 2mx to load (cold boot)

(btw I use cable and I have 2 network cards, is this a probleM?) note: the boot time shown on boot vis is INACCURATE, that time is way shorter than your actual boot time, if you dont believe me, time your boot process with a stop watch. The time shown on bootvice for my comp is 28sec, but realisitcally is a minute
