According to Wikipedia it's of least concern for protection and I'm pretty sure I've seen those things in ordinary bird preserves and such. It's also really easy to decapitate birds, and I would imagine even more so for a large ground bird like that. That said, since these guys are law students from one of the greatest universities in the country, they're obviously shitheaded and overly-entitled punks and deserve to die.

EDIT: Although it apparently is still technically an exotic bird, so whatever.

Law student? What do you expect? We have gazilion kids around the country that were promised to be rich once they became a lawyer.

Law industry has changed quite a bit and that's no longer the case, assuming you can even find a job.....

Imagine having a mortgage loan with no house to live in.

I can relate.

We had some of these when I was a kid, they are probably one of the most annoying birds that I can think of. I don't think that I would call them exotic though. We had them because they scare away snakes, and eat ticks.

Since when is a guinea fowl exotic? My grandmother used to have guineas at her farm.

I guess chickens and turkeys are exotic as well?

Cook the guinea, make the 2 guys eat it, problem solved.

If a guinea cost the same as a chicken, its going to cost a whole $2 - $3 to replace it.

If they get a felony conviction (probably not, though), they would likely never be admitted to the bar in most states.

Why would this be a felony? Guinea are livestock.

Its like a neighbor killing a chicken, goat, horse, dog,,, they would have to pay replacement cost, and some other fine.

Guinea are not rare or exotic animals, they are common livestock.

~ EDIT ~

In most states, killing an animal without the owners permission is a Class I Misdemeanor

http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/AnimalCrueltyLaws.pdf

~~ EDIT 2 ~~

http://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-574.html#NRS574Sec050

Cruelty to animals is defined as: “Overdrive, overload, torture, cruelly beat or unjustifiably injure, maim, mutilate or kill an animal, whether belonging to himself or to another; deprive an animal of necessary sustenance, food or drink, or neglect or refuse to furnish it such sustenance or drink; or abandon an animal” or cause, instigate or encourage such acts. The first offense is a Misdemeanor with a $200 to $1000 fine, imprisonment from 2 days to 6 months, and community service of 48 to 120 hours.

They also run your government and protect you from terror. Both Obama and Biden are lawyers. The cost of a few lawyers being able to game the system and get criminals off is a small price to pay for the safety (socioeconomic and physical) that government - run predominately by lawyers - provides.

This was the beheading of an animal in a wildlife habitat/zoo you fool not some farm. One of the charges they are facing is "willful and malicious torture or killing of wildlife"

I went back and edited my post, added a quote, and included a link to the Nevada criminal code.

Killing the Guinea was a misdemeanor.

Your own conscience should have told you that what they did was wrong. Only when you discovered it was an offense in Nevada's book is when you agreed with the students being charged with crimes. Forget about the law but think morally: The two decapitated a bird for kicks, do you understand what is wrong with that?

After reading your thread on how you "care" for your sick dog including feeding it chocolate, I shouldn't have expected any understanding or compassion from you in this thread. Did you cut that dog's nails yet?

I never tried to justify their actions.

The law is the law. The pair killed a Guinea, there is not much the state can do about it.

I have 13 chickens. If someone killed one of my chickens, there is not much the law can do.

The guys who killed the Guinea will probably have to pay a fine, and replacement cost. Replacement cost for a Guinea is like $3, you can buy Guinea chicks at almost any country store.
