Black Friday at my local Wal-mart - one of my wife's coworkers had her leg fractured in two places during the mad dash for bargains. The customer responsible never stopped. Wal-mart refused to release the videos until they had a court order to do so... she's been out of work since then.

I'm no fan of Walmart (I refuse to shop there on a moral objection to Walmart's business practices), but I think that site's statistics are crap. I put in my zip code and get "...no data for Wal-Mart stores within 100 miles of 15212..." Missing from the list returned at are at least two stores that have been around for five years or more.

It seems to me that they have data on "police incidents" for certain stores in certain areas, and use it to leap to wildly inappropriate conclusions.

The "study" surveyed 551 Walmart stores out of over 3,000 in the country. No mention is made of how the stores were chosen, or of what types of communities they are located in. The "study" seems to take on a slant towards Target by comparing "police incidents" at Target stores located within ten miles. I don't know about where you live, but driving ten miles in any direction from my home I can go from ghetto to exclusive neighborhood and back to ghetto several times. Nearby, if you want to compare crime statistics, needs to be in the same shopping center to draw any reasonable conclusions.

This is a website with a clear agenda, and anyone who falls for it needs to take a few minutes and a critical mind and read through the "study".

What if I originally plan on going to Target, and then I switch to going to Walmart... what are my odds then?

Exactly what constitutes a police call? Most of them are probably for shoplifting.

I lived in a relatively safe area before and the Walmarts near that zipcode had several hundred police reports, according to the website. However, now I live some place else with an overall higher crime rate and there isn't a single Walmart on the list.

I hope Wal Mart is named as co-defendant. They are liable for the unsafe shopping conditions.

Wal Mart is a shady company. My brother had to pick up a second job, and they offered him $8.75/hr to be a cart pusher. Well his first day one of the cart caroals broke and fell on a car and cracked the windshield, and dented the whole hood. They went inside and informed the managers, and the manager told them to go hurry outside and pick it up and never mention a word about it. The manager felt it was up to the customer to come to them, not vice versa. Well carts are one thing, they have disclaimers about how they are liable for damaged caused by carts, but cart carraols that arent bolted or fastened is what one would cause negligence.

Most Wal Marts dont go after shop lifters. My other brother, who is pretty much a criminal deviant would earn his income stealing from Wal Mart, then returning the items without reciept to get gift cards that hed sell for $.75 per $1 face value.

Also Wal Mart has the highest dollar value of product loss in loss prevention. Over half of that is a result from employees stealing. The biggest theifs in Wal Marts are wearing the blue vests.

that is very low if it is only 50%. most industry reports site somewhere between 70 and 90% of theft is internal.

It says there is no Walmart for 10 miles. The city despises & fights every attempt to build here. I do remember going to a closeout of one in manhattan about five years or so back.

Yeah... no you're not.

Target has security guards. Walmart has octogenarian greeters. The average Target customer makes $10k/year more than the average Walmart customer. I can't imagine why there'd be more crime at a Walmart.

No mention is made of how the stores were chosen? It's right in the report. It seems like everyone in this thread is making all sorts of authoritative comments without even reading the report.

The ?Is Wal-Mart Safe?? study is based on a
detailed analysis of local police incident reports (calls for service) covering 551 Wal-Mart stores in 434
cities and 30 states.5 The stores were chosen randomly based on a sample of 1,004 Wal-Mart stores that
were open for all of 2004.6 The primary findings of this study are based only on the police reports
associated with these 551 stores.

In 2005, we requested from police departments lists of all incidents reported (calls for service) at Wal-Mart addresses
over the last two years, organized by date and type of incident to which police responded. In total, we received
information for 582 stores in 30 states. Because we analyzed only those Wal-Mart stores that were open for all of
2004, and because we received some of the reports after we began our analysis, 31 stores were ultimately excluded
from the sample. Wal-Mart reported that it had 3,551 stores (3,013 Wal-Mart stores and 538 Sam?s Clubs) open in the
US in January 2004.

Not to mention 551 stores out of 3500 is a really large sample size. We use polls of 1000 people to figure out how 100 million will vote!

My walmart isnt listed, and we had police stationed at the entrance most of the christmas season, and every night after midnight there would be a police car on the premises throughout the night.

Look at the details shows most were for Forgery or Shoplifting. It's like the roach motel, bring the two bit criminals out of the wood work.

sheesh. looking into the one near me. from 2002-2005 it had 1608 calls. you can then see a PDF of what those were. most are between Shoplifters and Duty calls (there is a police department in the walmart).

From 2004 on there is ONE report of a person with a weapon.

Target only has 2004 listed. but they had 108 police calls that year with ONE report of a weapon. So while wal-mart has more going on Target is more dangerous.

It really depends on your area - the atmosphere of the Walmart/Target/Kmart. I've been in a Crooklyn, NY Kmart and sh!t is just all over the place, unkept and customers look like they are on food stamps. Contrast that to many other Walmart/Target/Kmarts I've seen where they're the total opposites. Depends on your area and how management is.

The closest one by me has had 249 calls since 2002. It's pretty well kept there. Targets are in general better kept too. I really don't know why Walmart gets such a bad rep ("for bottom-feeders"). Why wouldn't people want common products for the cheapest prices ?

Curious how only one person questioned the source. It's also curious how the source of this website does not readily identify itself.

Well, a little research and I found the source: WakeUpWalMart.com

They are a pro-union, anti-walmart group who spends all their time trying to tear Walmart down with various propaganda campaigns.

They couldn't give two sh!ts if you're safe at Walmart or not. Their sole purpose is to destroy Walmart. This is just another fear tactic.

Congrats, folks! You've been duped by political propaganda.
