No more ridiculous than you following him around and bragging about firing someone on an internet forum.

I'm sure he deserves to be fired, but as a boss, I can't imagine taking joy in doing it. Doing it because it has to be done? Sure. Reveling in it? Nope.

Only one guy I wish I could have fired. At the time I couldn't though. I would have enjoyed every second of it though.

If he deserved to be fired so bad you should have just gone up to him and fired him on the spot. That way you wouldn't have to deal with any drama on company grounds.

Did I not mention our strong union several times in this thread?
Do you understand how hard it is to fire someone?
Do you understand the long drawn out process unions demand to prove gross incompetence?

This is an enormous burden off our shoulders, and yes, I take great pride in that...so what?? Just because you don't have the balls to fire a guy who should have been let go, doesn't mean you have to make me feel the same way about this guy. It's business, it's right, it's justified, it's just plain meant to be. I can't go up to a guy and fire him...there are procedures laid out in the collective agreement. Not even considering this is an HR issue.

I definitely don't understand unions. So I can't relate to that.

In my case I could fire one of my employees on the spot if I caught him at a beer store during work hours. It would never happen but if it did I'd warn him or fire him depending on previous history.

The guy I couldn't fire wasn't replaceable at the time. Bastard knew it too.

I still think you have small penis syndrome though.

...$1 Can = $0.9 US.
His cost of living is far lower here too with non-taxable food, $200k avg house cost, $600 avg rental cost, no healthcare costs in the area. Nice attempt at a joke

$26 an hour to fvck off at the liquor store?! At first I thought you were being a dick, but this parasite has gotta go!
Our union is very strong...Skilled trades push $30 or more, manual labour gets $20+ and summer students get $17 per hour.

Yes, I'm familiar with unions. One of my highschool friends' dad was a local Teamster "capo" who loved to throw his weight around and get us summer jobs. $23/hour to severely damage important packages, take 3-hour lunch breaks, and fall asleep right in the middle of the convention center floor in front of everybody...and this was in the late 80s-early 90s. I can't imagine what they're paying now for high-quality slack-asses.

It's cheap for a reason. It was snowing north of Toronto roughly a month ago. That and the flapping heads and beady eyes.....

Oh well...unions are a thing of the past. Companies now understand the costs and liabilities associated with accidents and poor work conditions. Uniting for better work standards was helpful in our history and I do encourage countries like China to utilize this method of protest until their government and corporations recognize the value of employees and people.

Today however unions are very destructive for our continued success as a society, they allow far too many people a way to abuse others by freeloading off their hard work. Unions will die, either through coming to their senses and making consessions, or when the company is dragged under by them. Either way, when the design of something is flawed...it's just a matter of time before it self destructs.

More like 1 CAD = .88 USD but i'm splitting hairs here.

Despite my earlier post I believe you 're doing the right thing. You can't make money with slackers working for you. I think unions are good in general although some of the people they protect aren't. Just as the worker would take advantage of the company so would the company take advantage of the worker if given the ability. There must be some balance between the two.

I wish I worked as a hourly union monkey. Then I could power trip and scheme on how to get people I don't like fired.
You will argue your points in this thread, but won't divulge any backstory on the situation with this person. Though I'm sure if you did spill any information it would be completely biased and only useful for supporting your argument. Though either way, you started the thread to make a point and defend it to the end, commendable management badassery...

As for your beer selection, you have the beer store and LCBO at your disposal and thoes three beers are the best you can do (though Hoegaarden is good)? You have entire walls of beer at your disposal and you pick two of the most popular domesitcated import brews available. Shame on you.

What would you do to someone like this?

He should break a bottle over your head, leave the kid alone maybe he's had a bad week or something.

Are you kidding me?
No snow here for quite a while...one month ago the temperature here (3h west of Toronto) was over 84F.

Well a couple hours north it was snowing about a month ago. 4 weeks or 6 weeks ago, it doesn't matter, it was still snowing.

Don't get me wrong. It's a nice area. I'll be up there in a few weeks for the third time this year.

"kid"?

This "kid" is a drug dealer, alcoholic, misses work more than any other employee, shows up late more times than he is on time, is one of our poorest performing operators, has a horrible attitude, doesn't follow safety procedures, oh and is in his upper 40's.

He's had more than a bad week...try a bad career.

I don't know how north you are talking...but if you go really far north, you will find snow .

Keep in mind, southern ontario is at the same latitude as the upper part of California. The vast majority of Canadians (90%) live right near the 49th parallel, very similar conditions to new england, new york, chicago, detroit and seattle.

a co-worker of mine moved, expenses paid, to another division in Fort Lauderdale from St. Catharines.

he's doing everything he can to come back, it may even cost him his job and he doesn't care.

Ontario is a nice spot to be, I'd recommend Ottawa if possible. I've spent a lot of time in British Columbia, the weather is amazing and scenery astounding. Canada has a good quality of life, great place to raise a family...much cheaper to live if you make under $80k as well. Taxes here are utterly ridiculous, but what can you do?

To be honest, I'm not minding the current governments. I have a problem with how Caledonia is (not) being handled, but there are a lot of infrastructure improvements coming through with McGuinty's government.
