So M4H and I decided to follow him back to work and figure out whether he was working or not and to pass on the information to my coworker (maintenance manager). This guy is soooo screwed. Come monday morning HR and I will fire his ass!!
Dude... how could you do that to someone you know... couldn't you have just said something to him? And would you _never_ go to the shop for 5 minutes during work?
He obviously has a history...left that out, but needless to say he got caught, I don't owe him anything.
Are people allowed to leave company property during work, like for example, breaks? Perhaps he just bought some beer to throw in a cooler for after work. I would be real careful before you start any trouble... hopefully there is something for you to gain if you are gonna try and get this guy fired. Would hate to think anyone would do that just to try and brownnose his way to a better management spot.
We've been trying to fire this guy for a while...he's on his last chance...

Don't worry, you did the right thing. It's too bad he lost his job, maybe he will learn his lesson and try harder next time.

I used to work in a grocery store, and all the union ever did for me was take a few hundred dollars out of my pay check each year.

I was going to respond with something insightful, then I noticed your Sig and clicked the: 'Proof I'm Smart' link. It was then that I realised you probably have trouble grasping any kind of insight outside of your own narrow mind's capability.

For your sake, I hope that employee is generally not a good person.

*sigh*

How is Ontario? I'm not like most Americans that hate Canada for no reason. If I had to move out of the US Canada would be the first place I go.

I deal with Unions on a daily basis and I have to say that they are some of the most worthless slugs you will ever meet. Can his ass.

Ontario is a nice spot to be, I'd recommend Ottawa if possible. I've spent a lot of time in British Columbia, the weather is amazing and scenery astounding. Canada has a good quality of life, great place to raise a family...much cheaper to live if you make under $80k as well. Taxes here are utterly ridiculous, but what can you do?

Typical Anandtech, anyone who turns anyone in is worse than the guy he turned in.

I might have to make a trip up there in the next year. I'll keep that in mind. Any things you'd recommend a first timer to do while up there?

Depending on your age...
Clubs in Canada are a ton of fun, lots of energetic/friendly people. Lots of great restaurants in Ottawa and Niagara areas. Visit the museums in Ottawa, CN Tower and various art galleries in Toronto. Visit algonquin park to do some moose watching, canoeing and camping. Lots of lakes and outdoors stuff to do if you want to get out of the cities. Whitewater rafting if spring, skiing if winter, lots of nature oriented things to do. We have several Imax's, Toronto zoo is pretty famous...

Kinda on topic...BEER! American beer is utter crap, get yourself some *real* Canadian and European beer. The stuff in the US is watered down and tastes like water, I honestly have no idea how you guys can stand it. Micro-brews in the states is your only saving grace...such a shame. Even your American beers like Coors and Bud are brewed stronger up here...it just wouldn't sell otherwise.

Anyway...tons of stuff to do here. Cities are large (TO = 5mill, Ottawa > 2mill ppl)...lots of outdoors and culture.

Our union is very strong...Skilled trades push $30 or more, manual labour gets $20+ and summer students get $17 per hour.

Sidebar - if you only hit the big cities, you're going to miss pretty much all of the stereotypical Canadian wilderness you guys like to make fun of so much down south.

If you're feeling courageous/outdoorsy, go camping in the bush in northern Ontario and play "Spot the animals that can kill me in less than a minute"

I'm not sure if it's been said, but why didn't you approach him when you saw him? You are a supervisor right?

Watch him deny the whole thing and then tell your boss that you touched his wang and told him not to tell anyone or you'd get him fired.

Not all...just the ones who need a union to keep their job. Having a union is like a bribe to hide incompetence, while making everyone else make up the slack. It's not fair for anyone.

When it's my word against his...I win. With how thin our management team is, the likelihood 2 managers are going to catch people doing something wrong is slim. I don't need evidence on this one, not with his history...including countless written, verbal, and suspensions.

Your reasoning is ridiculous.
