I'm not a supervisor. I'm an owner. And when a guy makes me hundreds of thousands of dollars a year I'll tolerate his crap for the few months that it takes me to replace him. Still doesn't mean it wasn't very frustrating. When you're a small business though you sometimes don't have the luxury of having back up employees in every position. You should never say never.

As far as unions....they sound terrible.
I have never posted anything job related on the internet before, so I'm not bragging about anything. I had fun tonight busting this guy...I mean it's pretty random, I don't go to the Beer Store around here often, and then to see someone who is supposed to be working, someone with such a poor history...It was an interesting night to say the least.

Dude. Send me the guys email address so I can email a link to this thread. Itll be funny as hell if he beats the crap out of ya or finds a way to sue ya.

Haha
I'm sure he uses the job as a cover for his *real* business...I mean I've never seen someone with so little care for their career in my life.

Mr Stunt seems to be destined for a life of middle management. Forever to loathe his "underlings" and kiss the asses of those he deems to be above him.

a) I didn't kiss anyone's ass. I reported this to the on shift manager, my coworker.
b) I did this for my own benifit; not having to put up with his crap...see above for his history.
c) Everyone reports to someone...
Besides my company has very thin management. I report to the plant manager, who reports to the president of the Canadian Division. I was hired by the president and Vp's of the company. I am by no means middle management; those guys tend to have redundant and stagnant positions...and should be eliminated. What value do they provide the company or the customer?

Canadian Division has about 1,500 employees...the company itself has 28,000 employees.

How can you fire someone just for buying beer? I thought you can only do so if you could prove he was drinking on the job.

It's not that he was buying beer, it's that he was buying beer while he was supposed to be at work.

If I took off in the middle of the day for a beer run, you better believe I'd get at the bare minimum a severe ass-chewing and sent home for the remainder of the day.

Ask him what?
Why are you at the beerstore when you are supposed to be working?

They don't let employees take lunch or any other breaks? Did he have the day off? I mean seriously you have no idea what the surrounding circumstances were yet you want to fire this guy (who doesn't work for you) sounds like you'll make a great Upper level manager...

I'm his supervisor....

What would you do to someone like this?

How are you his supervisor if you don't work the same shift? If you do work the same shift then why were you at the beer store? Seriously your story is peppered with holes and reeks of egomaniacal self-glorification.

Not allowed to leave the jobsite, period.

You're telling me that the Union didn't negotiate even a lunch break for their members? Honestly the guy is better off without the job if that's the case. 8 straight hours of manual labor = craptastic.

Right, because no one brings a lunch to work. That's prohibited.

Update:
This morning HR, Plant Manager, Production Manager and myself had a meeting. The plant manager and I wanted his ass out of the building, after the other supervisor started asking around people mentioned he could barely stand at the start of his shift (on drugs). Unfortunately we have no way of verifying this. Due to the nature of our business we will require this deadbeat in the building, so our HR manager gave him an unconditional last chance and told him he had to go to drug councilling. The union sat down and talked to him, saying that they will no longer stand up for him; they can only fight so many battles, and he's not worth saving.

As a side note, he ended his shift on friday after they discovered he had taken over 50minutes for break. Once caught he said he wasn't feeling well, and walked home...instead of taking his car.

This guy is such a charity case...it's funny to see ATOT feel for this deadbeat.

They get 30min lunch and two 15min breaks.
Just can't leave the jobsite.

This thread is still going?

You never answered my question. With the great selection of the beer store and LCBO, why did you pick such mediocre beers?

IMO your actions speak loud about your managment abilities. Here in the states what you are doing is a crime. Disclosing confidential employee issues to show off for your friends.

My guess is that when your employers see the rapport you have with employees they will see your advancement level as limited.

What if the guy said no way, and told his boss? I bet Stunt would get his ass fired real quick for attempting blackmail...

I don't think the employees name was mentioned anywhere in the thread.
Though I'm sure even discussing something like this with the public, let alone on a huge internet forum, is against company and union policies.
Stunt made it clear that he wasn't promoted for his respect for policy, but for his hardwork.... I'm finding this situation a bit hypocritical and this is turning into a major penis wagging fest by Stunt. But whatever, he and the employee in question are union employees, lesser humans by default.

I never said he disclosed their name. I meant to construe that he did not have the maturity level to handle the trust that he has been given by his employer.

Lesser humans by default? I would be willing to bet that there are more non union employees posting at work here than union based on percentage.

I would also be willing to bet the next fire in your neighborhood will be put out by Union members, so watch the insults.

bitching about slackers is fine. the OP has not not disclosed anything confidential at all. though it wouldn't be hard to figure out who it was (if you worked there).

but i agree its just a E-penis showing by stunt.

All managers have had a employee such as the one stunt describes so i can sympathize with him heh.

It was a joke, though I'm willing to bet most union people arn't sitting at a desk all day.
All the firemen in my neighborhood are volunteer. All the policeman in my neighborhood are nonunion.
