ok, so a buddy of mine got these two video cards but he doesnt know the make more model. is there any way i can identify what they are so that i can maybe start looking for some drivers?

Should be tags and labels all over it... or if not...

ATI usually = red
nVidia usually = green

Or, if you really wanna go on a wild goose chase, you can get the serial number, and start plugging it in on every major graphics card manufacturer's website to see if you get a match...

If it doesn't say somewhere on teh card they're probably really old.

Post pics of them maybe. Or else remove the heatsinks from the cores and read the markings there. Of course, if the person doesn't know a thing about videocards, and these are new Radeon cards with exposed cores, they might wind up getting damaged.

For newer cards maybe - I have in this very room a green ATi videocard. And I have owned a red Geforce2 card.

no one is just a regular vga adapter and the other has an nvidia chip on it. but i dont know who made it.

Red...green... what a stupid advice! Color is totally irrelevant, its just something the manufacture chooses to differentiate from others. Ati cards come in all flavors (Red, Blue, Green) aswell as nVidia cards.

One good place to start is looking for a tag on the card that has the FCCID on it (if there is one) and plugging it into the FCCID search page. This ought to give you all kinds of info on the product (in most cases, even a PDF of the user's manual if click on the DETAIL link). If anything, it'll let you narrow down the manufacturer and then you could go to their website and do a serial number search to narrow down the card.

Hey, If you have the card already installed on the system try this tool Everest It will list all the hardware on your system including links to the drivers. Good luck.

If it's a PCI or AGP card, then you can install it into the system, and then use various tools to find out the "PCI ID", which can then be used to identify the mfg, model, etc., and locate drivers. If the cards are ISA... well, just throw them away, they aren't worth much.
