It's not news that Google's YouTube shows live sports internationally. Not sure if they've ever done it in the US for a major US sport. But showing blacked out NFL games is what may get the interest of ATOT users and would be a first for YouTube. That is I'm assuming if your city blacks out a local NFL game because not enough tickets were sold then you could just watch it live on YouTube. I know the article is referring to anywhere in the US where the game is not available live and doesn't specifically mention blacked out games of the type I described. I'm just guessing it will include them mostly because of the way the internet works.

The way I read it is that when the Sunday Ticket package is up for renewal next year at DirecTv that Youtube may bid on the rights.
It doesn't say if Youtube will be exclusive or if they will show the games free.

Watch youtube block the IP address ranges of the people living in the blackout areas. Oh and using a proxy is illegal now in the US of A. Good luck football fans!

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...ess-public-website-ruled-violation-of-us-law/

Although that needs to be struck down, it did not do what people think it did.

The ruling was based on a cease and desist letter that was sent to him. Which is still bullshit, but does not mean simply using a proxie is now going to land you in the pokie.

I have little faith that the next little step is to rule using proxies to circumvent "lawful" IP range restrictions is a violation as well. I'm too tired to really flesh out my line of thought on this, but a sysadmin blocking a specific user from a public website isn't too much different than blocking a whole bunch of people from a website and using the same ruling to persecute them..erm prosecute.

Hell YouTube might even add a little clicky agree button to really get people to abide by blackouts. It's not like the NFL won't put some sort of restrictions on Google to get that very lucrative NFL license.

Completely misleading headline. Please change. Youtube *might* show NFL games, is just in talks and nothing would happen until a year from now.

It is a safe bet to say that I if YouTube ever did stream live NFL games, it won't be for free.

Youtube already charges for movies, so they have the system in place to charge for content. I think it would be a great feature.

I'd pay $250/yr to be able to watch any game in a given year at any time in 1080p via the internet.

Alas, no one wants my money.

Most College and NFL football have been available for viewing on the web for several years if you know where to look.

Actually when the exclusive deal with DirecTv is over I would assume that the NFL will make Season Ticket available in some manner to most of the people in the country and not just those who have DirecTv. In fact, I think the NFL is going to make a lot more on it than they do with just the limited number of DirecTv subscribers..

NBA I'd give $300 but I need my local games. I'd even settle for 720p. I'd still come out way ahead of paying for cable.

This.

It won't happen this season or next. MAYBE the season after that (2015-16), if these talks go well and they reach an agreement.

The article I read said that DTV bid for the rights...and they paid 1 billion per year for it. It also said that DTV lost money on it...that they make around 975 million per year on it. So the NFL will get the money for it no matter what they do or outbids who. Apparently the cost is going to be around 1.5 billion per year to get the exclusive rights when the current contract is up, and DTV will probably not renew.

I agree, they should spread it out to more carriers because they could charge 3 companies 700 million and make more money (or whatever the numbers work out to be) but that isn't how it currently works.

I'm not sure how they calculate DirecTv lost money. Even if the people who paid for the package did not cover the costs there are those people who got Directv because without it they couldn't get Season Ticket. Those subscribers paid for some kind of basic package above and beyond Season Ticket.

If the NFL makes Season Ticket available to all or almost all people regardless of whether they have Directv I am going to assume they will make far more than from Directv alone.

I would think that the NFL could just offer it like the MLB package or the NHL or NBA package thru any cable company. That would make it available to over 90 percent of the country, I would guess.

yeah, I'm sure they don't take into account anything than the raw numbers from people buying the package.

Agreed. I don't know when the signed the last contract with DTV, but the game has continued to grow, and they (the NFL) can make much more by not giving exclusive rights but sharing. The price for customers could also be more reasonable (but I doubt they'd lower prices, because people continue to pay it anyway). $225 is a bit ridiculous and they charge you an extra $75 just to get RedZone, the ability to see games on tablets/phones and to watch who games in 30 minutes?

iirc before I downgraded my cable package as long as I got a package with the NFL network they included RedZone.

Actually 225 dollars is pretty reasonable. You get 17 weeks, so that's 4 months for your 225 dollars or 57 a month or 13 a week. When you break it down that way it seems a good deal. That's about 1.50 per game excluding televised games.

Not on DTV. You don't get it unless you get the Sunday Ticket (and pay the extra $75).

Sunday ticket saves me and the woman money. Instead of going out to a restaurant/bar to watch the games that aren't on CBS or FOX locally, we can sit on the couch with the iPad/Laptop and monitor our Fantasy stats.

It probably pays for itself easily if it prevents us from going out eating/drinking 3 times.

As soon as sports get on the internet, cable television as we know it will crumble. 5-10 years.

If I could get *just* Sunday Ticket, I would. Unfortunately I don't want the other crappy channels. Give me the NFL, NBA, and NCAA football and basketball and I'll give you $40/mo.

Luckily, my contract with Directv will expire when their contract with the NFL expires.

Maybe Apple will buy the NFL rights with their pocket change and put it on AppleTV? A lot of people would hate it, but I would be fine for that.
