You've heard of calling India...but England?

This afternoon I made a call to Pearson Vue to get a score report for one of my exams. Just after dialing, there was a click and then a foreign sounding ring tone on the line. A faster, higher pitched, double ring. Then this guy was a beautiful English accent answers. The hours of operation for the phone number are 7 ~ 7 Central time, so I was surprised to get someone so far away.

Has anyone else ever been diverted to a foreign country unexpectedly for a basic phone call? I would think that, unless these companies are using VoIP, these are some pricey calls. We've all been shuffled over to India for those technical support calls, or calls to cancel the AOL subscription that you made at Best Buy to save a few bucks... Just strikes me as odd?

Just because he thinks an English accent is 'beautiful,' doesn't mean he wants to get in his pants. Sheesh.

I called Intel not long ago. Could barely understand the guy.

Where was he? Scotland.

Years ago (past life, maybe?) when I was working for Kmart, I had a Scottish guy go through my cash register line. His accent was so strong that I really couldn't understand much of anything that he said. I just smiled and nodded, and off he went.

Is there really any language with so many accent variations that it can be made as unintelligible the way English can be? I don't think accents are dialects, so those don't count.

Ever notice that accents in English mostly disappear in music? heh Maybe the phone guy should have start singing for me, instead. hahaha

i called MS not too long ago, and it sounded like the guy was english, but then after a while, he started sounding indian. the two aren't exactly the same, i know, but he confused the hell out of me. he also didn't understand english very well either.

the way i reasoned it was i figure that indians probably learn UK english instead of US english since they were colonized by the English.

True 'dat! I watched a show on TV a while back that was showing what the people in India go through when they want to work in a phone center (centre) that fields north american calls. They teach them our slang and make them practice using our accent so that we understand each other better. Apparently some companies are more successful at this than others?

Yeah, that's pretty much the reason why.

One of my Indian friend's parents have a pretty distinct English accent but you can tell it's a little off from your average English accent.
