Anyhow, I'm happy to see the trend of sensibly sized android phones continue. However, did Sony really need to use a proprietary wireless changing method?

Charging.

ANd you can still use USB or those little metal pads on a docking station.

I've looked at Nexus 5 and Moto X...but they both leave out expandable SD, which is totally annoying and ridiculous! I always roll my eyes saying WTF? So this new Z1 Compact is a dream come true! Unbelievable specs, pretty darn good camera, expandable microSD, and the topping is waterproof. Simply unbelievable. Of course it will cost $$$, but I'm willing to pay extra for these features that the idiots at Google/Motorola decided for me, that i don't need these features! Well, screw them for trying to manipulate how people use their devices!

The Z1 is made by Samsung?

Hell no. It's too good looking to be touched by Samsung. Only SONY can make such a device. The Samsung choir in ATMD&G sing the praises of mSD and batteries to the high heavens, proclaiming their allegiance to those two features and vowing never to buy a device that does not have them. Sad.

then don't buy it... nexus 5 is google's "phone" to showcase the android experience, moto X has google's finger in the jar as well

google has said they don't like external cards
I find it a bit amusing that other vendors like HTC and Sony are moving back to offering micro-sd storage after micro-sd was widely panned as obsolete.

Color me surprised that with a little thoughtfulness, you can add it with no design downside and likely minimal cost.
think google/android has new changes to the external storage API which helps solve some of the shortcomings (one of the problems is user trying to open/save a file, and don't know whether the file is in /internal/sdcard or /external/sdcard, so they have to hunt, bad experience)

http://developer.android.com/about/versions/android-4.4.html

If your app reads from external storage...

Your app can not read shared files on the external storage when running on Android 4.4, unless your app has the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission. That is, files within the directory returned by getExternalStoragePublicDirectory() are no longer accessible without the permission. However, if you need to access only your app-specific directories, provided by getExternalFilesDir(), then you do not need the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.

tl;dr, looks like the app needs to explicitly support external storage.... so it puts the onus on the developer instead of user... space-consuming apps like video camcorder can default to external, and the popup window to save can explicitly say "internal" or "external" instead of giving you one dialog at /root/

Why is finding sdcards useful in a phone something particular to Samsung fans given that this thread is about a Sony phone that happens to have one?

Your obsession with Samsung is peculiar, particularly when you have to interject it into a thread that has nothing to do with Samsung and is about your own favourite manufacturer.

The camera has worked like that forever.

Any ideas what the price of this thing will be in $ once it comes to the US market?

Many arguments have broken out here where people dismiss every phone out there that did not have an mSD slot or removable battery. Who was the only manufacturer that had those two? Samsung. IIRC, you were in the middle of those brawls so you pretending that you don't understand the backstory to my original post in this thread disingenuous.

FWIW, SONY always had mSD. Is it necessary? Doubtful. Right now I have a phone that has a removable battery and mSD slot but I don't take advantage of it. Why? Because it simply isn't needed even though I probably talk on my phone during work more than anyone else here in this forum. Usually, it's down to 3% at the end of a hell of a day (without charging)...

might be a while

Sony has been neglecting the US market with regards to the phones

T-mobile is it's exclusive partner. but Z1 was released internationally in September 13, came to US in the online Sony store in Oct 13, and finally a carrier version (Z1s) this year

the Z came out in march, came to US around may, got onto T-mobile as an official carrier release in June

maybe the time-to-market for Z1 compact will be quicker

Neglect is the wrong word. I see them having little desire to make CDMA phones (so Verizon and Sprint are out) and AT&T as well as Verizon like having undue influence on carrier phones. I feel like a lot of the problems both Sony and Nokia (pre-Windows Phone) have is they have to sell phones to carriers, not to consumers. And that requires a lot of finesse in carrier relationships, which some companies are not very good at. Nokia still has to make carrier-specific flagships and Sony only exists on T-Mobile in the US. It's not a very ideal position to be in.

Wha...?
This has zilch to do with the Z1; it doesn't have "those two" and no one but you even brought it up in some strange fit of Samsung rage.

Of course it does, Mr. "Micro SD? Win". Many here have proclaimed that if a phone does not have mSD and removable battery then it's dead in the water. That assertion is evident here with the continuation of the useless debate over mSD, something which SONY has had on their phones forever.

Why are you even talking about this in this thread?

Because you and Zaap inserted the endless debate about mSD in this thread, completely ignoring the fact that SONY has had it in their phones since forever. Nothing has change and people that like the phone will buy it irrespective of the mSD feature.

Funnily enough the thread isn't about me or Zaap, or your obsession with other members or even if you are apparently suffering from PMT.

Its about the Z1, which does appear to have an SDcard slot.

You've backtracked enough in this thread that I will now consider the matter closed. You are right, though, this thread is about the Z1, from SONY, which has had mSD cards since forever. There never should have been a debate on it in the first place.

So of course it has "those two"as in a removable battery which only you brought up in order to go emo over Samsung?

Of course it doesn't.

There's nothing more I can say without getting an infraction.

The only reason for pause, I'd say, is battery life. We don't know how long the Z1 compact lasts in the real world. It may do well given that it's a bit thicker and has a smaller screen, but there's no guarantees.

Its got a 2300mah battery and a fairly small screen with a modern SOC so it should be at least OK for battery life. That said its made by Sony so who knows, they have a habit of somehow pulling terrible performance out of good hardware.
