im looking to replace the heatsink on my dell gen3 xps, anyone know if this will do it. The standard one is defective and makes my system noisy by causing the case fans to spin excessively loud

You might wanna make sure it'll fit your case first. Check the measurements to be sure you have enough clearance. Also there is a 9500 AT which is for intel processors. You might want to check that out since I'm 99% sure that if its a Dell, its probably Intel.

There is a new version of this out that mounts on the AM2 boards in addition to all others.

I believe the CNPS9500 is a bit better if you turn both fans to maximum speed.
However the CNPS9500 is also louder when the fans are cranked up.
The Big Typhoon is much too heavy imho, where the CNPS9500 is oodles lighter than the B. Typhoon.
Both are extremely large and may have incompatabilites with your motherboard.
There is an alternative: Mini Typhoon, which is all copper and sports a smaller, but more efficient 92mm fan.
I don't know much about the Mini Typhoon though, but i'm sure if you chip isn't a high heat producing OCer the mini would do just fine. Even the stock cooler will do well.

For me I wanted a quieter solution so I bought the Big Typhoon. I soon realized the mounting of the Big Typhoon is tricker and harder to tell if you screwed it down balanced correctly.
So the only two concerns about the B. Typhoon is it is too heavy and the mounting is a bit awkward. Most will say the mobo most likely will not snap even with all that weight.

Just FYI the best heatsink out right now as far as I can ascertain is the Tuniq Tower. It works a lot better than my Scythe Ninja did (I'm talking 5+ degrees better), and the Scythe is about equal to the Big Typhoon. There aren't a whole lot of reviews for it though, and your PWM area does get hot. Just thought I'd throw this out there too.

First time I've seen it dip below 50 dollar range. Now comparable price to the Si-120 from Thermalright but I have no need to upgrade just yet.

thanks for the info
the xps cases are full tower so i hope it would fit
they have a plastic hood that normally goes over their cpu/heatsink/fan combo and that would probably have to go but it just clicks off.
im looking for ultra quiet and no overclocking, would this be the one to get?

This is more than enough for an unltra quiet and no overclocking scenario.
Just leave the fan on minimum and you will probably not hear it unless you have no other fans running.
High chance that the case fans (or other fans) will drown out the CPU fan noise.
