Yeah, I was lucky too. Took till this week for my fan to completely die on me. It was dead for a few hours, then by some luck (and messing with it myself) I managed to get it spinning right now, averaging at about 7000rpm (was slowly increasing from 4000 all day) Its at the point where I'm afraid to turn off my PC for fear that it won't start up again.Originally posted by: evilmrroboto
I've been one of the lucky ones so far. I've had mine running for 6 months, never cleaned the fan, and it's still running quiet. I have MBM5 monitoring it all the time and it's always at 7670 or 8350 rpms. I've got MBM set up to sound an alarm if it ever goes below 6000 rpm and I've got a fan just waiting for the day it goes.
I called Asus and i'm getting a replacement... I don't think passive's a good idea in my case, I have an XFX 6800GT with stock heatsink that creates so much passive heat that I have a pci-slot fan directly below it, doesn't help as much as it should.
If I grab that Zalman passive thing, I know I have clearance - Is there any way to attach a fan to it? Screw it inbetween the fins or something?

hi guys.. im a newb here.
well my fan is not working, and i wnt to replace it with a zalman NB47J, but i have seen people saying that after removing the original heatsink and fan, their secondary ide stops working. is there a safe way to do the replacement? or something i shoulnt do to avoid that kind of failure?
Where? That's the first time I've heard of that problem. It's only a heatsink change...they probably scratched a trace on the PCB or something.
i like how no one answered my question :frown:Originally posted by: blustori

Ahhh, It's a beautiful day - because I can actually hear it.
I had the opportunity to install both my Zalman VF700-Cu and the NB47J Northbridge cooler. For those wondering, it has to be the TIGHTEST installation I have ever had. I have included pictures as I had to mount the NB47J different than the previous pics posted. After doing a fitting with the old pushpins, marking the arms, I got it to clear both the fan on the VF700 but the fins as well. Make sure you have a good idea of spatial awareness about where the VF700 sits in relation to the NB47J, or you are bound to have problems. Literally, if Lian Li made a crap case (which they don't), the lean of the card caused by bad mounting holes would have put the fan in the NB47J (we're talking about 1-2 32nds of an inch).

OK, no one ever told me how insanely difficult it is to remove that northbridge heatsink and how insanely difficult and tricky it is to install the Zalman NB47J.
BUT, I have recovered from the trauma of how difficult it was to install and am now happy. As a matter of fact, I feel I no longer need to replace the Gigabyte Neon Cooler 8. I suspected the CPU heatsink was the one making all that noise. Now, I can relax.
BTW, how can you tell what the temperature is there? I only have motherboard temperature in Sisoft Sandra.
\EDIT: How is 46'C as a temperature for motherboard?

Why was it difficult? All you have to do is remove the motherboard (which may be a pain) and then use a needle nose plier to squeeze that plastic thing together and you can easily remove the old northbridge heatsink and replace it with the NB47J. I had zero problems whatsoever installing it back onto the motherboard.
