Yeah, I was lucky too. Took till this week for my fan to completely die on me. It was dead for a few hours, then by some luck (and messing with it myself) I managed to get it spinning right now, averaging at about 7000rpm (was slowly increasing from 4000 all day) Its at the point where I'm afraid to turn off my PC for fear that it won't start up again.

I called Asus and i'm getting a replacement... I don't think passive's a good idea in my case, I have an XFX 6800GT with stock heatsink that creates so much passive heat that I have a pci-slot fan directly below it, doesn't help as much as it should.

If I grab that Zalman passive thing, I know I have clearance - Is there any way to attach a fan to it? Screw it inbetween the fins or something?

I put a Zalman Fanmate2 on my chipset fan and ramped down the RPMs to about half. Works great. Case is very quiet now, and temperatures don't seem to be a problem.

At idle:

Case Ambient: 30C
CPU: 37C
Chipset: 38C

well my fan is not working, and i wnt to replace it with a zalman NB47J, but i have seen people saying that after removing the original heatsink and fan, their secondary ide stops working. is there a safe way to do the replacement? or something i shoulnt do to avoid that kind of failure?

Where? That's the first time I've heard of that problem. It's only a heatsink change...they probably scratched a trace on the PCB or something.

well i really dont get it either.. its only a heatsink change

I think im staying with the zalman solution.. i dont wanna trust again in those little fans that could stop working anytime :S

Just installed the NB47J today and oh boy what a huge difference in noise level!

I just registered to thank every user in this thread for contributing, especially the pics helped me a lot being a rookie and all

I believe you can. I've run my 6600GT in the second slot before without any issues whatsoever.

Seriosly... You guys are awsome. I just can't get over that we all have the same motherboard and same graphics cards and all think that the ASUS Northbridge thing SUCKS

This thread made me register... not just to say that I'm buying the NB74J... But to answer Blustori's Question...

Acutally the Question had already been answered.... http://members.cox.net/vladimir/photos/chipset/6.jpg

You need to cut some pins to fit a 6800 Ultra...

(but why not just get the 7800

If you're willing to pay for a 6800 Ultra... I'm sure a 7800 wouldn't be a stretch)

Just thought I'd sign up and let everyone know that I installed a CoolerMaster PAC-P01 on the chipset with no clearance issues. My sig says my setup.

Here's a useful tip for removing the existing fan on the a8n-sli. Since the pac-p01 comes with its own clips, I used some nail clippers on the rear side of the motherboard and just clipped the existing arrowhead plugs. This seems to be the safest and easiest way (especially if ur by urself) to remove the existing clips. First, push the plug on the front side of the board so you can get the nail clippers just beyond the base of the arrowhead on the rear side, then *snip! (be careful not to scratch the PCB)

Anyway, good luck to you all and thanks for everyones helpful information.

I had the opportunity to install both my Zalman VF700-Cu and the NB47J Northbridge cooler. For those wondering, it has to be the TIGHTEST installation I have ever had. I have included pictures as I had to mount the NB47J different than the previous pics posted. After doing a fitting with the old pushpins, marking the arms, I got it to clear both the fan on the VF700 but the fins as well. Make sure you have a good idea of spatial awareness about where the VF700 sits in relation to the NB47J, or you are bound to have problems. Literally, if Lian Li made a crap case (which they don't), the lean of the card caused by bad mounting holes would have put the fan in the NB47J (we're talking about 1-2 32nds of an inch).

Duude, that's really tight!!

Good install!

OK, no one ever told me how insanely difficult it is to remove that northbridge heatsink and how insanely difficult and tricky it is to install the Zalman NB47J.

BUT, I have recovered from the trauma of how difficult it was to install and am now happy. As a matter of fact, I feel I no longer need to replace the Gigabyte Neon Cooler 8. I suspected the CPU heatsink was the one making all that noise. Now, I can relax.

BTW, how can you tell what the temperature is there? I only have motherboard temperature in Sisoft Sandra.

\EDIT: How is 46'C as a temperature for motherboard?

My stock fan is extremely quiet! No problems there! Why? Because I took a look at it and it was not even working! This was the replacement one I got back in March. Who knows how long this thing has been dead! Well, computer has been working fine, so maybe the better heatsink they put around the stock fan is actually doing the job.

What's the best way to take a temp reading of the chipset fan? What is the normal reading? I'd like to at least see if it's within the norm before I panic.

reading through all theses posts I feel safe to think that I should be fine to replace my stock NB HSF with NB47J. I'm just a bit reluctant because of my overclock.. should I be okay? If I do put the NB47J on I don't want to add a fan.. the whole reason it interests me is to have one less fan

Why was it difficult? All you have to do is remove the motherboard (which may be a pain) and then use a needle nose plier to squeeze that plastic thing together and you can easily remove the old northbridge heatsink and replace it with the NB47J. I had zero problems whatsoever installing it back onto the motherboard.

Well, the needlenose pliers kept on slipping. I could not for the life of me get a grip on the danm end of those pins. One came off OK but the other one, I just kept on squeezing over and over again until I kind of shredded the end and it finally gave. I also kept on wondering how much pressure I could put on the motherboard while I was holding it. It made me nervous the whole time.

Then putting on the Zalman was also rediculous since I wanted the pins to be aligned EXACTLY. I only thought of using the original heatsink as a guide AFTER I put on the Zalman. Anyway, I lifted up the Zalman and put it back in place countless times to re-adjust the placement of the pins. I kept on being wrong by a millimeter one way or another. (I was putting on top of the chipset to see where the pins would end up.)

I suppose if I had to do it again, it wouldn't have so much difficulty because now I have an idea how to deal with the whole thing.
