Zalman emailed me back and stated that

Thank you for your interest.

Our ZM-NB47J is compatible with your ASUS A8N-SLI deluxe mobo.

If you have further enquiry, please contact us.

Regards,
Support/Zalman

So, start replacing that noisy buggers with Zalman!! I looked at the board and found that the push pins are kinda hard to be taken off. Anyone has ideas? tools?

I was thinking about doin this mod but wanted to know:

What kind of temps do you get on your chipset now?

How does it mount?

Is it reversable?

Idea for pin removal:
Wife pinching them with long fingernails or using Matco Scribes.

Got mine on order today with a Zalman VF700-Cu. The combo is going to cut it soooo close on room. I'm looking the for the VGA fan to push enough air on the heatsink to be meaningful.

I will let you know when they come in. Currently, the spec and figures are like this:

CPU: 39C
MB: 36C
GPU: 42C
Ambient in Case: 36C

Setup:
A8N -SLI w/ FX55 using SwiftTech MCX6400-V
4 x 512MB OCZ 400 Pl ver 2
3 x WD Raptors
LianLi PC-V1200B
PNY Quadro PCI-e

I will keep you posted...

Looking forward to results if you folks try the passive zalmans. I had one on my old A7V266-e board and it ran fine.
I'm just worried about the increased heat from the nforce 4 rig.

It's fine... 32C with CPU@2.50 GHz and HT@1000 MHz.

Of course I have a 120mm fan at the front of the case pushing 60+ CFM. But now my case is very, very quiet.

My case fans easily drown out my chipset fan, and they in turn are easily drowned out by my surround sound. Noise for me, is not an issue.

Oh and skinner - if the sink doesn't seem to get enough airflow, consider modding a side intake fan onto your case. It's a fairly simple mod and can really help temps for VGA/Northbridge.

The new VF700 Zalman VGA coolers haven't hit the shores yet. Supposedly this week. As for airflow in the LianLi, we are running:
1 - SilenX 120mm 11db
1 - SilenX 120mm 14db
1 - SilenX 80mm 14db (for the SwiftTech)

and then the abomination for the the chipset and VGA on the Quadro card... :disgust:

I have some other options on airflow that will keep the sound where I'm after without the side mod - Good idea though.

Thanks,
Skinner

Yes, it doesn't interfere with any of the 16x slots (good design by Asus there). There might be a problem if you have a huge 2-slot cooler on the upper card though.

just wonering how this cooler is working on an overclocked system, and will it clear the heatsink on a 6800 ultra card. any feedback would be great as i am tring (maybe in vain) to make this system as quiet as possible but still be able to overclock the s%&^ out of the thing. thanks

Thanks Weiman, that pic convinced me to loose the crappy north bridge fan and get something a bit better!

Just ordered mine from www.overclockers.co.uk, as far as I am aware they will deliver to the US as well.

Now I know why I got that cross flow fan for my stacker...

Installed nb47j but different than in the picture taken in post above..rotated it 90 degrees counterclokwise...

You think it makes the difference?

I got a few fans blowing air in from side almost on it...but it gets pretty warm on it...but no noticable problems so far...If it burns ill know...right?lol

I didn't even get to try with the stock hs/fan but decided to get the nb47j since I hate active chipset cooling. It does get hot but so far everything's been stable even after several hours of gaming. I'm running at stock speed btw.

Well i just got word from thermalright support that theirs nb1-c chipset cooler isn't supported if you r about to run two vid cards...since im using just one....maybe ill give thermalright a try...but expensive that one is...but maybe it will run a bit cooler...i feel unsafe with nb being so hot...

Whats the max temp the nforce4 chip can take anyways?

Ahhh, It's a beautiful day - because I can actually hear it.

I had the opportunity to install both my Zalman VF700-Cu and the NB47J Northbridge cooler. For those wondering, it has to be the TIGHTEST installation I have ever had. I have included pictures as I had to mount the NB47J different than the previous pics posted. After doing a fitting with the old pushpins, marking the arms, I got it to clear both the fan on the VF700 but the fins as well. Make sure you have a good idea of spatial awareness about where the VF700 sits in relation to the NB47J, or you are bound to have problems. Literally, if Lian Li made a crap case (which they don't), the lean of the card caused by bad mounting holes would have put the fan in the NB47J (we're talking about 1-2 32nds of an inch).

The pics are large to let you see how close it actually was:

Specs this morning...

CPU: 40C (was 39C)
MB: 37C (was 36C)
GPU: 36C (was 42C)
Ambient in Case: 31C (was 36C)

Happy Moding!

Thanks,
Skinner

That almost looks dangerous Skinner... But effective. The airflow and fins look perfect. GJ.

Why didn't you just leave the stock GPU cooler on and stick a Zalman FB123 using quiet mode over both the graphics card and the NB47J? I think I might try that combo when I build my A8N-SLI system. Do you think it would have the same results?

It looks like the NB47J will block the other PCIe slot if you go SLI oriented like that.

Thank you - It really took some effort.

This will answer the previous question too... It is a PNY Quadro 1300. I don't have either the cashflow or time for getting the SLI version of the Quadro, this will do just fine for the time being. It does Dual DVI on a Quadro chip (6600GT would have worked too).

As for the real question: The stock GPU cooler is noisy too - I killed two birds with as low of noise as possible. I had a FB123 on my old rig with the ZM80C, pretty quiet. I was looking for a little different this time around considering that heatpipe rig would completely block the chipset cooler (If I have a grasp on how big it actually is). This may work better for most if the actual GPU is further towards the back of the case.

It looks like the NB47J will block the other PCIe slot if you go SLI oriented like that.

I think you're right, but it may not be an issue if your card's GPU is further back. The tweak is only necessary for clearance. I actually know I can bend the fins on the bottom of the VF700 to get a straighter run and get the second PCIe, but I wanted to see it work first and still have the ability to return it if I had a barbeque.

Any other questions - throw them out, I'm loving this setup right now, hope it helps others...

Thanks,
Mark
