I have the XFX 7800GTX which is overclocked to 490mhz and i am thinking of using the Zalman to lower temperatures and for the quiet operation it provides. I am concerned that it will be incompatiable with my card as there is no mention of the 7800 series on the website. Anyone sucessfully fitted a zalman onto their 7800GTX?

installed on my 7800gt no problem. i think for your gtx, you need a few more ram sinks since the zalman only comes with 8.

From what i've heard, any aftermarket cooler that is compatible with a 6800 ultra is going to be compatible with a 7800GTX.

Can you buy heat sinks seperately thats the thing.

Crescent: what coolers are compatiable with the 6800ultra at the moment. I have never attempted to change the cooling on any graphics card before so i am a complete n00b.

The AC Silencers are not...I don't know about others though. Flyingbig (Welcome to the forums if you haven't been already) you can buy ramsinks seperately>http://www.jab-tech.com/search.php?mode=search
Changing out a gpu cooler is fun and well worth it imo. You will want to stick with either the Silencer series by Arctic Cooling or the Zalman VF700 series. g-luck! Ask us any Q's you have

Snowice have got the temps better? I shoudl get my 7800GTX in about 5 weeks and i am planning to buy the AS NV5 rev. 3 or the Zalman, but i am a bit worried by the ram sinks - how are the temps there as ill try to get the rams to 1250-1300MHz? Did you try to OC ur card?

Thx Jbdan, ill maybe consider the arctic silencer when it reaches our shores but in the mean time i found the source of the noise and it wasn't my 7800gtx but the fan on the side of the case, i never thought a fan could make that noise! Anyway replaced it with a cheap fan from an old case and computer is silent as a button. I may still want to get the temps down as they are too high for me so thanks for the info.

temp is about 10c better than stock when the fan is running at 12v. but i run my fan at 5v, temp is about 5c better. i bought the zalman because i cant stand the noise of the stock fan. when the fan is running at 12v, it's still quieter than the stock fan. but when it's running at 5v, it's almost silent. you have to put your ear next to it to hear it. i had an AS nv5 on my 6800gt. while it's quiet, but it doesnt really cool better than the stock cooler. also, it collects lots of dust and it's hard to clean. the main reason i picked zalman over AS this time is the compatibility issue. zalman can fit on any current video card and the future ones. but you have to get new rev from AS whenever new video card comes out. yeah, i did OC my card. i have a bfg 6800gt oc. i got it up to 470/1150. not a big OC. but remember, i bought the cooler for the noise reason.

Correct.... the rev 3 is, but he said "any cooler compat w/ 6800 ultra is going to be compat with a 7800gtx." Thats what I was correcting.

Nice - Is the vf700 running at 12V or 5V? What are your temps then?

Kensai really interested in more details, what GTX card do you have and did you buy extra ram sinks? What was your temp before and after fitting your Zalman?

Just installed one of these on my 7800GTX, temps are down about 9C idle and 14C load. I actually bought OCZ Copper Ramsinks to put on mine and they worked great! The board only has 8 RAM chips (8 * 32MB = 256MB), so no need to buy extra. Highly recommend this to just about anyone who likes a quieter system whil also wanting better temps!

What were those temps again? I took the side of my case and my temp dropped to 48c from 54c which is nice so i may not need a Zalman but i am still tempted for overclocking purposes!

I take my side panel off and my temps stay the same!!

Since your temps went down...that would indocate you need to work on obtaining proper air flow throughout your case!!

Tell me about it! In fact my temp is idling at an amazing 44c at the moment which is a massive 10c drop than with the side of the case on. I must have bought the worse case in the history of cases but my power button does light up so its a keeper

My temps go up a bit when my case cover is off. BTW, my old temps were 58C and 85C, new tmps are even better after a little work: 43C and 68C!
